Robin Hood.

(from wiki)

Robin Hood is an upcoming film based on the Robin Hood legend, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe. It is due for release on May 14, 2010. The film began development in 2007 when Universal acquired a script entitled Nottingham, depicting a heroic Sheriff of Nottingham to be played by Crowe. Scott's dissatisfaction with the script led him to delay filming, and during 2008 it was rewritten into a story about Robin Hood becoming an outlaw, with the position of being Sheriff as part of the story. Scott dropped the latter notion and Nottingham was retitled to reflect the more traditional angle.

Premise

In the film, Robin is an archer in Richard the Lionheart's army, and the villains are the French. This version of the character was abandoned as a child and has problems trusting people. After Richard's death, Robin returns to Nottingham, becoming an outlaw and trying to win the heart of the widowed Lady Marion. Producer Marc Schmuger said "This is [about] how Robin Hood became an outlaw and this is how those guys became the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest."

Cast

Russell Crowe as Robin Hood

* Russell Crowe plays Robin Hood, in what is Crowe's fifth collaboration with Scott, and their fourth in a row. Having loved the character since childhood, Crowe joined the project despite being initially displeased with the script. He spent ten months reading books about the character and his historical basis, noting "This has got to be the best [Robin Hood depiction] ever done, otherwise I should be doing something else." Crowe put on much weight for 2008's Body of Lies, so Universal considered sending an NBA trainer to Australia to coach him back into fitness. Crowe trained with a bow and arrow for four months and was able to hit a target from 45 metres.

* Cate Blanchett as Lady Marion. Sienna Miller was originally cast in the role. Miller stated that,"The script has been evolving and changing and it often happens in films. They've been trying to make this for a couple of years and they rewrote the script and they needed someone who was older. There's a husband who has been away at war for 10 years and he comes back, so it's just not feasible for me to play her."

* Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey, King John's henchman. When interviewed in November 2008, Strong stated the character was originally called Conrad and was based on Guy of Gisbourne. He described him as having blond hair and a disfigurement from being struck by a crossbolt.

* Vanessa Redgrave as Eleanor of Aquitaine, King Richard and King John's mother.

* Oscar Isaac as King John of England.

* Léa Seydoux as Princess Isabella.

* Kevin Durand as Little John.

* Scott Grimes as Will Scarlet, Robin's nephew.

* Alan Doyle as Allan A'Dayle. Crowe enlisted Doyle to play the Merry Men's minstrel, having collaborated on the album My Hand, My Heart.

* William Hurt as William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke.

* Matthew Macfadyen as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Production

In January 2007, Universal Studios and Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment acquired a spec script written by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris, creators of the TV series Sleeper Cell. Their script portrayed a more sympathetic Sheriff of Nottingham and less virtuous Robin Hood, who become involved in a love triangle with Maid Marian. The writers received a seven-figure deal for the purchase. Actor Russell Crowe was cast into the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham with a salary of $20 million against 20% of the gross. The following April, director Ridley Scott was hired to helm Nottingham. He had attempted to get rights for himself and 20th Century Fox, but had collaborated with Grazer on American Gangster and signed on as director rather than producer. Scott was not a fan of previous film versions of Robin Hood, saying "the best, frankly, was Mel Brooks' Men in Tights, because Cary Elwes was quite a comic".

In June, screenwriter Brian Helgeland was hired to rewrite the script by Reiff and Voris. Producer Marc Shmuger explained Scott had a different interpretation of the story from "the script, [which] had the sheriff of Nottingham as a CSI-style forensics investigator". Scott elaborated the script portrayed the Sheriff of Nottingham as being Richard the Lionheart's right-hand man, who returns to England to serve Prince John after Richard's assassination. Though Scott felt John "was actually pretty smart, he got a bad rap because he introduced taxation so he's the bad guy in this", and the Sheriff would have been torn between the "two wrongs" of a corrupt king and an outlaw inciting anarchy. Locations were sought in North East England including Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle, and Kielder Forest. A portion of filming was intended to take place in Northumberland. As a result of the WGA strike, production was put on hold. Scott sought to begin production in 2008 for a release in 2009.

Filming was scheduled to begin in August in Sherwood Forest if the 2008 Screen Actors Guild strike did not take place, for release on 26 November, 2009. By July, filming was delayed, and playwright Paul Webb was hired to rewrite the script. The film was moved to 2010. The Sheriff of Nottingham's character was then merged with Robin. Scott explained Robin "has to retire to the forest to resume his name Robin. So he was momentarily the Sheriff of Nottingham." Hedgeland returned to rewrite, adding an opening where Robin witnesses the Sheriff dying in battle, and takes over his identity. Scott chose to begin filming in February 2009 in forests around London, having discovered many trees which had not been pollarded. Scott was also pleased that the 200 acre Nottingham set that was built during 2008 had aged into the landscape. By February 2009, Scott revealed Nottingham had become his version of Robin Hood, as he had become dissatisfied with the idea of Robin starting as the Sheriff.

Filming began 30 March, 2009. In August, the crew will begin filming at Freshwater West, in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

Discuss.

I thought this was called "Nottingham"? A much better title, BTW.

I'm torn on this. I can't help but be fascinated and liking Robin Hood films, on the other hand they are often quite bad and/or silly. I will probably go and see it, I mean it can't be worse than Prince of Thieves.

The unstable nature of the script does not bode well. I'm betting that by the time the film in is post-production, Robin will be a werewolf and the sheriff a vampire.

I was really interested in this back when it was called Nottingham, Crowe was playing the Sheriff and it was a revisionist look at Robin Hood, I was incredibly excited and interested. But now I'm very disappointed to see that's it's just going to be another version of the same old story. Nottingham had real potential; a shame they let that idea drop.

I second that - when I first heard about the film, it sounded like it was going to be a fresh take on the whole Robin Hood story, but now it just seems like ANOTHER retelling of the same story.

Let me guess, Russel Crowe will get to be heroic, there`ll be epic battle scenes, there`ll be some "final battle" before which Crowe will pace back + forth in front of the Merry Men whilst giving an inspiring speech á la Braveheart etc etc

Agreed. I heard that an earlier version of the film was going to be about how Robin Hood was actually a creation of the sheriff, which might have been an interesting angle. But a straight retelling of Robin Hood story in Ridley's gritty historical epic style just feels a bit pointless and redundant to me.

I think they really missed an opportunity here. I would like to see the Sheriff as the good guy, Robin as an idiot bandit, and Richard I as a twit crusader that didn't care about England (he spent all of six months of his ten-year reign in England).

And I've always been interested in King John. He was not a good guy, granted, but the difference between him and Richard was that Richard was a better soldier.

So ... Richard is dead, John is king, Will Scarlet is Robin's nephew, Robin's coming back from fighting the French ...

I'm getting a whole King Arthur vibe from this.

Exactly. This is the movie I wanted to see. And Crowe would have been great as the beleagured Sheriff.

Agreed.

Which also leaves me confused about why they even brought the script in the first place. They've completely abandoned the premise of the film. That's like if you started off trying to make a movie about a crime fighter that's limited to only normal human capabilities, and then decided wouldn't it be cool if he also had flight, super strength, and x-ray vision. What is your movie about anymore?

A "Robin Hood Begins" type of thing would be fine with me, except all the players are rather too old for the youthful depiction of the character the material would seem to require. /shrug/ I guess by 2011 we'll find out if it works or not!

Well some of the research seems to imply that Robin Hood was a veteran archer when he became outlawed, of course this was also rather in the 15th century instead of the 12th.
