Arterton was great fun in Quantum of Solace. I look forward to seeing her here.

Okay, I'm a huge fan of the SoT trilogy, so I'm kind of irritated that they couldn't have, you know, gotten Middle-Eastern-looking actors for these roles. WTH.

Robocop

Sony Pictures (Screen Gems division) was working on a new RoboCop film in late 2005. No details were revealed other than the unofficial (and confirmed) announcement. In November 2006, Bloody Disgusting reported that the RoboCop remake had been halted.

In March 2008, however, RoboCop was mentioned in an MGM press release[13] regarding franchises it would be focusing on in the future. An MGM poster displayed at the Licensing International Expo of June 2008 read, "RoboCop coming 2010". The studio has met with Darren Aronofsky to discuss the possibility of his directing the film. Aronofsky was confirmed as the director during G4's live coverage of Comic-Con. This new film is not expected to be a sequel, but rather a rebooted version.

My only hope in this one comes from the Aronofsky factor. Whatever you think of him, you can't deny he's shown nothing but integrity in his choice of projects so far - I have a hard time believing he'd choose this as his debut 'mainstream' film without some specific vision in mind for it. Otherwise, I don't see any point in this being made at all.

My own barometer for whether a film should be remade is simple: Can a remake improve upon the original in any way? Since year by year the craft of cinema itself improves -- in terms of technology if not artistry -- then it stands to reason that any remake at least has the potential to outclass its original. This holds true especially if there is external source material, as with for example A Christmas Carol (all versions of which, of course, are based on the Dickens novel) or John Carpenter's The Thing (which was not a re-make of the Hawks film, but rather a more accurate version of the short story "Who Goes There?").

RoboCop does not qualify as a potentially good re-make for both of these reasons. Filmmaking techniques used in 1987 have not improved enough to justify a new approach to the material. As we can see from watching the Verhoeven picture, CGI was not at all necessary to tell the story stylishly and effectively. Also, no new version could possibly boast the appeal of a "fresh approach" to the source material, because the original was made scene-for-scene from a screenplay written expressly for the film.

That only leaves the possibility of a "re-boot". I'm generally in favor of re-boots, but can a better screenplay than the original possibly be wrung from the core idea? How can the story of Alex Murphy be told with different dialogue, shot compositions, actors and music in a more effective way than what already exists?

I'm left scratching my head at the very notion of a RoboCop remake.

I'm a Christian and most of these movies are total rubbish. But I do love them anyway. And Bettany? I'm in.
