I loved the original as a child. Eddie Albert and his Eddie Albertmobile (how we miss you, Eddie!). I had such a kiddie crush on Kim Richards. But when I saw the movie again more recently...it is all kinds of 70s era live action Disney awful. It is MST3K bad.

Even so, I still have a copy of the book.

And I'd take the boys to the remake in a heartbeat.

Meh. Looks like some cheap laughs and overdone CGI. Pass.

Having nothing better to watch while I wrapped gifts, I tuned into the original movie (1975) and its sequel (1978) on TCM today (who have had a 'family day' recently).

The original starts with some good credits (with the exception of cheesy animation), and has some good actors--Donald Pleasance, Ray Milland & Eddie Albert. Pleasance tries underplaying, which definitely doesn't work in a movie like this; Milland is smarter, and delivers a rip-snortin' performance as the chief villain. Albert is his usual decent self as the kids' chief helper. The direction, screenplay and special effects are equally craptastic, but the plot has considerable appeal. A brother and sister are orphaned by their foster parents, and exhibit special powers. A nasty millionaire wants to exploit them, etc. I can see that this could be a good movie, minus Disney's saccharine touches, and with more money spent.

The sequel has a less interesting plot, but there's evidence of better and smoother production values. The kids are also, if not good actors, less bad. Christopher Lee is a splendidly sinister villain (great three piece suits and homburgs), and Bette Davis, usually an embarrassment in her later films, has a certain dingaling charm as his sidekick. A third actor, supposedly in the film her nephew, is their muscle, and looks remarkably like a younger Lee. A very talented goat plays a large role (get your mind out of the gutter, it's Disney!) It also features, five years prior to ESB, a duel between the sister and the brother (controlled by Lee), wherein they hurl inanimate objects at each other, using their mental powers. As kid movies go, not bad.

The preview was awful. They're just trying to cash in on the success of Heroes.

And yet the preview was better than the entire last two seasons of Heroes.
