And, here... we go..again...

AMPTP Suspends Negotiations with Screen Actors Guild

Guild Offers to Continue and Negotiate "Around the Clock" to Complete Deal

Los Angeles, May 6, 2008 -The AMPTP suspended negotiations with Screen Actors Guild today over the objections of SAG's negotiating committee. The committee had urged that the AMPTP continue discussion and had offered to negotiate around the clock if necessary in order to secure an agreement.

The AMPTP declined to continue negotiations with SAG claiming that it was necessary to turn their attention to negotiating with American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA).

Screen Actors Guild National President Alan Rosenberg said, "It is unfortunate and deeply troubling that the AMPTP would suspend our negotiations at this critical juncture. We have modified our proposals over the last three weeks in effort to bargain a fair contract for our members. We are committed to preserving rights that have been in place for decades and not giving the studios the right to use excerpts of our work in new media without our consent and negotiation. Our negotiating team is prepared to work around the clock for as long as it takes to get a fair deal. We want to keep the town working."

Over the last four weeks Screen Actors Guild negotiated in good faith and modified many of its proposals to the AMPTP. To date, the AMPTP has offered only a few modifications to its new media proposal which was submitted to SAG in three documents containing 36 provisions that differed from the deals agreed to with the WGA and DGA.

SAG's National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Doug Allen stated, "We were hopeful that we could continue negotiations with the AMPTP and reach a tentative agreement. We modified our proposals in effort to narrow the gap between us and now we need the AMPTP do the same. SAG's objective is to keep the town working and get a fair contract, so we are gravely disappointed that we will now have to delay to a process that we started over three weeks ago. We are willing to work for as long as it takes to negotiate a good agreement for our members."

The AMPTP put forward a proposal that differed substantially from the deals signed with the DGA and WGA. Management's clip demand would gut existing provisions regarding actors' consent to use of their clips and would allow studios and networks to use or sell clips - going forward and from their libraries - in any way they choose and without consent.

So, is the AMPTP pulling this move to take advantage of the summer hiatus/rerun season? to use the time to haggle SAG down?

I really don't know what's going on in their heads- this isn't like the writer's strike where they have extra scripts laying around they can film during an interim period. I can't see the producers being able to hold off for very long like this without really harming next fall's lineup and next summer's movies. Stupid thing is they did the exact same thing they did with the writer's- walk away even after the guild tabled DVD discussion.

Oh for God's sake...

Look, even if they have valid points, few will feel sympathy for actors. Selling a writers strike to the public is easier, because in a lot of cases they really were not making much at all. But when anything the general public has heard about actors and salary is usually in terms of "ACTOR GETS RECORD AMOUNT TO FILM NEW MOVIE!" garnering sympathy will be very hard. Not to mention lingering discontent over the writers strike amongst the viewing public (as evidenced by lower television ratings across the board)...this would be disastrous all around, for all involved.

But most actors are nowhere near those 20 million dollar paychecks that the stars get. That's a tiny fraternity of less than a few dozen actors who get those huge paydays. The vast majority are lucky to get work. I used to be an agent, and I know how tough it is for the average actor. 95% of the Screen Actors Guild membership works less than six days a year.

I'm not disagreeing with you on that, but as I said, it's all about perception. And for better or worse, the average person perceives that actors are already overpaid and spoiled. As such, getting any popular support will be difficult IMO.

I think that SAG might get some perception sympathy if they push the fact that the producer's alliance is not giving them the same deal as the WGA and DGA. That puts the alliance in a bad light once again for forcing the strike when SAG probably would have taken the same deal up front.

Unlike the WGA, though, I think that its going to be hard for SAG to drum up any sympathy from anyone not living in Hollywood or working in the biz. Obviously its impossible for the average joe to relate to actors making millions who are fighting with studios that rake in billions. Kind of like what happens whenever there is a strike in professional sports.

I think the HBO series of Entourage and Extras may have given some people a bit of perspective on how difficult it can be as an actor. I sure look at acting differently. Not ***holes like Tom Cruise or anyone else making and wasting far money than they can possibly deserve just because their name draws viewers to the film, but the average actor who doesn't make much in those few instances that they can find work gets a great deal of sympathy from me.

Seriously, the AMPTP is only doing this to punish SAG for siding with the WGA in their strike.

sorry, but unlike the wga, they did not create their material, so I'm not that symphatic to them. And if they strike, so what. There's other things to do out there, I hope all the people involved realized that the viewers just don't care. Since the wga strike ended, viewership is down on all the major shows.

If they strike, then there is nothing on TV or in film. Cannot make the stuff without actors. The public does care and did care about the Writer's Strike. Just because you and some people you know might not have cared doesn't mean no one does. The AMPTP would be idiotic to let this go anywhere near a strike.

**** Actors. What do they want now, 40 million a pic instead of 20?

This is getting out of hand. Then again, Studios are a bunch of Money-grubbing Who*** with no taste... So I guess, that puts me on the side of the actors, by default. tongue
