The First Avenger: Captain America ***Spoilers***
|
Okay, so there's been news for a while now about an Avengers film featuring some of Marvel's most iconic and recognizable characters. As of now, they're planning to introduce each member of the super team in their own individual films, which will lead up to The Avengers in July of 2011 (this date, of course, is tentative). Now, Iron Man has been released, and The Incredible Hulkis less than three weeks away. A Thor movie is in the works, which leaves the last major Avenger - Captain America.
News on a Captain America film has been scarce at best. We don't have a director, a lead, or anything of that sort. So right now, it's all speculation. Here's what we've got:
Who will play Captain America?
In my experiences on various forums and message boards, the fan favorite to play Captain America was the square-jawed, blonde, and ridiculously talented Aaron Eckhart. But when the actor signed on to play Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, those hopes were diminished significantly. Well, recent rumors have suggested that the most likely candidate to play Cap is none other than Matthew McConaughey. Now, I hate that decision, and I really am hoping that it doesn't come to fruit. Who would I like to see in the role? The leading man from Fox's LOST series, Matthew Fox. He's got the look down pat and he's got the chops, so I say go for him, Marvel.
Who will direct the movie?
Again, nothing official here. Older scuttlebutt suggested that Nick Cassavetes of John Q and The Notebook fame would be helming the project, which I wouldn't be disappointed with at all. John Q was a fantastic film that was very well put together.
Who will write the movie?
Zak Penn, who wrote X2 and the upcoming Incredible Hulk. But he also wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, Elektra, and Fantastic Four, so... I don't know, it's iffy.
When will the movie take place/What's the plot?
Captain America WILL be set in World War II. And recent news states that the Captain America storyline, specifically the super-soldier serum, will be set up in the upcoming Incredible Hulk film. Pretty nifty, huh? Also, something very interesting regarding Cap was pointed out in the recent Iron Man film. Captain America's shield is in Iron Man.
When will the movie be released?
As of right now, May 6th, 2011.
Well, I'm pretty sure that's all we've got for now. Discuss away.

I'm not familiar with his work, but it seems Mark Valley has been thrown around as a popular choice to play Cap. he certainly looks the part better than any other suggestion so far. I don't watch Boston Legal though, so I can't say if he has the voice or gravitas to back that up.

Apparently an Ant-Man movie has been in the pipeline for a while, but since there's no official announcement of it or anything, it probably won't happen soon.

There's no way the Ant-Man movie is gonna be made before the Avengers. No one cares.
However, he's an important enough secondary character that he (and, by association, the Wasp) can be introduced in the Avengers movie. If they somehow manage to make him appealing enough of a character in that movie, then I could see them doing an Ant-Man movie using the Avengers movie as a spring board. But no matter how much Marvel develops it, ther's no way (Gi)Ant-Man will be marketable or appealing enough to sustain his own movie before then.

IIRC Edgar Wright is helming Ant Man and he will be included in the initial fold. Honestly I can't see him carrying his own feature and personally would rather see more of the Wasp but thats just me.
All I can say is that Cap is second only to Spidey as the character I am dying to see on the big screen...now that the webhead has had his day its time for Cap to take the spotlight. I can't wait.

As long as they don't go all PC and call him Captain Earth, or something to that effect.
From what I remember reading, the Ant-Man movie was going to be based on the Scott Lang version anyway, but that was some time ago. Honestly, if they made more than one Avengers film, I think the meltdown that Pym had over several incarnations of his superhero identity, and his relationship with Jan deteriorating would make a compelling sideplot in a series of films. That may just be me though.
I'd certainly rather a film be based on one of the older plot lines though, even if they have to modernize it to an extent.

I'm not sure I buy that being Captain America's shield. At least not from that pic.
If Thomas Jane hadn't already played The Punisher, he'd be an awesome Captain America. As would Josh Lucas.

It's probably easier to see in the movie than just that one still- Marvel did confirm it's there, just half-constructed.

IIRC he had two sheilds...
This one from the 40s.
This one from the modern era.
So its possible that during his hibernation that he loses it and that Stark creates a new one for him. My question is why is Stark playing with the concept now before he knows of the Avengers initiative or (presumably) before they uncover Cap.

Cap got his circular adamantium shield in the war years - it was actually given to him by President Roosevelt.

A fact that can be fudged (as it was in Ultimate Avengers) for the sake of story telling.
