Okay so I made this thread for the purpose of discussing surreal director David Lynch's projects, and maybe even Lynch himself. There doesn't appear to be any other thread for this purpose.
Lynch is perhaps best known for his films Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Inland Empire.
He is also well known for Twin Peaks, a surreal TV series.
The word "Lynchian", used to describe something weird, was inspired by him. David Lynch equates with weird films.
I see this thread's main purpose as analyzing his weird creations, which is what most Lynch fans devote themselves to.
Zaz, I almost forgot. Didn't he take his name off that film though? At least he tried to.
Well, in any case, David Lynch did in fact direct Dune, though it didn't turn out the way he wanted to, and I can't remember why exactly, but I believe there was outside interference.

He gave up final cut to make Blue Velvet, which ended up being a very wise decision.

Right...so...Inland Empire...anyone who has watched it...
any ideas as to what the movie is about?
I think it's about language, negativity and the human race's desire for narrative and things to make sense.

I haven't seen Inland Empire, so I cannot comment on it yet. But I love Lynch and deeply respect him as an artist. His conversations about the creative process are a personal inspiration. Here are some of my thoughts on the following Lynch films:
* The Elephant Man (1980) - First Lynch film I ever saw, in the theater at ten years old. It moved me to tears then, and still does. Here's my description of it from my list of 50 Favorite Films: "Moody imagery and stark extremes of human cruelty and kindness combine to wring compassion from the viewer of this riveting drama, which miraculously finishes on a positive, life-affirming note."
* Dune (1984) - Flawed but fascinating take on the sprawling sci-fi novel. In many ways Lynch's most ambitious creation, and all in all a very effective genre movie. Lynch took his name off of the extended TV cut, which did not conform to his vision of the film. The theatrical cut and its video releases bear his name, but the extended version credits one Alan Smithee as director.
* Blue Velvet (1986) - Oddly enough my least fave Lynch movie; it's the one most people seem to love, and is spoken of as enormously influential, etc. The use of rock music in ironic places surely inspired Tarantino and probably Scorcese to use the same technique.
* Twin Peaks (TV - 1990 - 91) Like it alot, love parts of it, but basically it's a daytime soap opera with slightly better dialogue and a bigger budget. It improves with repeat viewings, expecially the episodes actually directed by Lynch. (Movie - 1992) A harrowing depiction of spiritual carnivores and innocence lost. Disturbing and creepy; no wonder it bombed at the box office.
* Lost Highway (1997) - My favorite Lynch film after Elephant Man. Elliptical, illogical and utterly compelling, it is also impossible to figure out but demands that you make every attempt possible to do so until your brain hurts. Stylish and creepifying.
That is the limit of my Lynch experience. I have yet to see the G-rated Straight Story, the R-rated Mulholland Drive, Wild at Heart, or any of his Internet pieces. But I dig him alot and look forward to reading other fan's comments and observations.

I liked Elephant Man, Dune and what i've seen of the Twin Peaks series. I've only seen bits and pieces of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With me and Lost Highway.

Lynch AND Herzog collaborating? This could very well end cinema as a whole. And with that storyline, I would not put it behind them to make a real snuff movie. Just because they can.
It's like David Lynch is pulling together a sort of crazy-old-visionary-director version of The Dirty Dozen, and he's Lee Marvin. (Larry Clark is clearly the Telly Savalas of that crew.)
I would KILL to die in a Herzog/Lynch collaboration.

I guess I'll believe it when I see it...there's nothing on davidlynch.com about it.
But then again, maybe there wouldn't be.
