I haven't even made any summer movies yet. Wait until I get my 10-film, multi-series, epic franchise completed, with 12 great video game-based movies interspersed between projects, and then you can judge my effect on the summer movie season and bow before me. tongue

Or be murdered when he screws up.

The EW article makes my head hurt. I'd rather have more Batman Begins, Hellboys, and Iron Mans with the occasional abomination like Catwoman and the FF movies than put up with Transformers or anything Micheal Bay has ever made.

Also Wanted is going to suck but thats because it's based on a **** comic book and they changed things to make it more **** which is impressive.

You are quite possibly correct. Wanted seems like a really toned down, and therefore lame, knock off of Shoot 'em Up.

Shoot 'Em Up, possibly the best movie 2007, was a comedy and possible send-up of those other films- I can't see how you can even compare it to Hard Boiled or Wanted, which take a relatively serious approach to their material.

I don't know that Summer Movies are generally very good in the first place, and I don't know that you can blame Superhero movies for that. You can blame Hollywood's lockstep and its fear of seeing (or doing) something different.

Note: I don't much like Superhero movies, and will explain why. The back-story...how the superhero becomes the superhero...is generally fairly entertaining. The denouement...the superhero fights a supervillain...is generally terribly anticlimatic. There are always exceptions. Mine was "The Incredibles" which was witty to the max, and took a different spin. Most people's exception is "Batman Begins" which is frankly pretty bad, and wastes some wonderful talent, including the director, the star, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Liam Neeson in small roles. It was a gigantic hit, however. I will say here: I have little affinity for either Batman, Superman or just about any superhero. I liked Spider-man, but the first Spider-man movie went bad about the mid-way point; that is, when it switched from back-story. I have seen numerous superhero movies--you can hardly avoid seeing some of them. I will say I rather liked Burton's second Batman, and the second of the Reeves Superman movies, the first because Burton's demi-Gothic style suited the material, and the second because the villains had more than usual interest. But the later films in both series were awful. Haven't seen the FF movies, nor any of the X-Men movies. I would like to see "Ironman", mainly because I like Downey a lot.

Another problem: unscary CGI set-pieces, of which the dinosaur stampede in the recent "King Kong" is the best example, though the jungle chase in Indy 4 comes close. In other words, these movies have become so formulaic that nothing seems new in them.

So, next question; is there a way--besides parody, which hardly ever works--the formula can be tweaked?

I will agree with you in the sense that every non-sequel, superhero flick has basically the same origin story. In terms of originality, the only two I can really think of are The Incredibles and Unbreakable, and they're not even comic adaptations.

However, I tend to geek out when they're done well, and I think they often are. The top tier for me would have to be Superman: The Movie, Spider-Man 2, and Batman Begins.

I am longing for a director to start messing with the formula. David Goyer's upcoming Supermax movie sounds promising in that regard.

Superhero films have yet to pull an ESB - make a film where the good guys lose. From a narrative standpoint, that sets the whole genre back a few decades. We still use the same structure time and time again, with the same damn plot devices in just about every superhero film that comes out.

Of course, Watchmen is on the horizon. If the film is done right, it should move superhero films forward.

The new Robin Hood movie has the Sheriff of Nottingham as the hero, and RH as a stupid lout larking about in ye forest. I like that idea a lot. RH is always portrayed as a supporter of Richard I, who was so interested in England that he spent six months of his ten-year reign in it. At least ol' Prince John wanted to be king.

I'd certainly like to think it'll be a nice break from the typical superhero movie that's based on a DC Comics or Marvel characters. But judging from the previews it looks a bit more like a satire of the superhero genre. In either case, I'm looking forward to it (though not as much as Dark Knight.

As for the genre in general, I think some of the most interesting movies coming out this summer happen to be superhero movies. The problem is that it's kind of hard to keep it interesting when you start making sequels. People generally expect the usual happy ending, and that's what you usually have (X-Men 2 was a nice exception, in a way).

Maybe the problem is that superheroes really made for better entertainment as Saturday-morning serials. If anyone here has ever watched The Adventures of Captain Marvel, from around 1941, they might know what I mean. wink

Dark Knight looks to be breaking boundaries, if Harvey's storyline takes the road is seems to be taking.
