This is the thread where everyone can give their experiences about being in a school band or other organized group (garage bands welcome). At my school, the band is not appreciated as much as I think it should be (we receive little to no coverage all year), so I think that it would be good to start a discussion with those of you who, like me, want to share their band experiences. And remember; we're all here for the love of playing music. Have fun! peace

A Confession: I can't play an instrument and was never a member of my high school band. So I need some information, here. How many instruments are played in a normal school band?

Well, my school had several different ensembles. We had a Big Band, that had everything (not strings), a string orchestra, and a stage band, which was the 'elite' band was a smaller version of the big band. There was also a guitar group, and various year level groups.

It's been my experience they usually have all the brass and woodwind, plus percussion. But I have a feeling it depends on what the students actually play...nobody wanted to play tuba in my year level so our group didn't have one.

I didn't realize there was such variety. Does the school own the instruments?

Yes, the school district does own instruments. My bass (pronounced base, not the fish) clarinet was rented from the district. However, it always had something wrong with it; that's what you get when there is only one man doing all of the repair work for the entire district.

My mind's eye view of high school bands is always marching bands, for some reason. But the string band is obviously stationary.

There are only have four members in the string orchestra; course, the band is 85. There's more to bands than marching, although we actually did march in a parade several days ago. We play at football and basketball games, and did a little caroling during the holidays.

Not in money, but we had a gift card to spend at Starbucks for some hot chocolate. On a cold day, some HC is soooo good.

Hey, there's only a small group of us that do it every year. Maybe 10-20 of us do it. In that case, it is fair; unlike having all 85 of us relying on a gift card- that's just wrong.

Oh, BTW Zaz, you asked how many instruments there are in the typical school band. There are 8 "main" instruments: flutes, clarinets, saxes, trumpets, trombones, baritones and tubas. Percussion consists of snare drums, bass drums, timpanis and bells/xylophones. Also, there are "families" of instruments that are similar to each other. Those are the basic band instruments.

How many members would a marching band have? Some of the ones you see in the Rose Bowl parade, for instance, look insanely large.

My marching band in highschool had a little over a hundred members and we were the "Marching Generals." I played trumpet and since we were a "show band" we had comclicated dance moves that looked awesome but were a pain to do. My band performed everywhere including Chicago, Disney World and even London. While in H.S. I also participated in the symphonic band, pep band, and jazz band.

Yeah, my school had no marching band and we all had our own instruments. We could rent through the school's teachers if we liked but the school didn't actually have any instruments of its own.

And GUNSHIP's description sounds about right for our instrument mix, though we didn't have a tuba we had a bassoon instead. laugh And we had a guy on a drum kit instead of multiple snares and basses. And some guitars. Really whatever instrument you wanted to play, you could get a spot in the band for it.

Well, one of our two tubas and our only bassoon graduated this year, so we're in for a long year next year. However, I tried playing bassoon last summer. I can actually remember 4 notes on it (the fingerings, not the names). It's a pain trying to learn bass clef after playing in treble clef for 6 years.

My school district owned a bunch of instuments, but most of my bandmates and I owned our own instruments. Our band teacher decided to put together a jazz band that practiced after school. It was awesome and we had fun.
