My high school had symphonic band, jazz band, wind ensemble and marching band was mandatory for those in symphonic. Probably the highlight of my high school career. I was in 3 of the 4 (Never did Jazz band). Made a lot of great friends from it, but I sure don't miss those cold nights at band competitions.

You have to be enrolled in a band class to be in Jazz Band (except for the guitar players; they can be in guitar class), and all of those in Band have to do marching. Marching is exhilarating, but very tiring.

I was never a big fan of marching band, but I also was playing baritone sax at the time as well. It gets heavy after a while.

Some of the instruments are very heavy, and I used to wonder how on earth they could be carried. The bass drum, for instance.

There's a whole strap device for carrying those things. My bass clarinet needed a neck strap (for some reason I couldn't use my prop rod all year, so I was using my strap the entire time) in marching because it might be dropped otherwise. It's a big instrumnet, but still small when compared to instrumnets that are impossible to march with (a.k.a. Bass Sax, Contra Alto Clarinet, Contra Bass Clarinet etc.).

Bass clarinet is pretty light compared to some instruments in marching band.

I know, that's why I said it was lighter than other instruments. However, it is still pretty heavy in comparison to flutes and clarinets.

The worst to carry would have to be a sousaphone. I tried holding once and I couldn't possibly imagine carry it for a long time. I was very grateful to be playing trumpet.

Alto Sax. I have played all most the of the saxes(tenor, bari, and soprano), but Alto is the first sax I ever played. I also know how to play the clarinet(my first real instrument), flute(sorta), harmonica, guitar( on again, off again), and a piano( on again, off again).

The only instruments that I can play are the clarinet and bass clarinet. For a year there was violin class, but I did not do well at that.
