I tried playing the violin/fiddle a few times, but never took the time to properly learn how to play it.

I've played the violin for over ten years and I still don't know how to properly play it.

I find string instruments "boring" because there's not a whole lot of contemporary music. Not being a fan of classical music, I don't like having to sit through four pieces written 200-300 years ago.

I'm quite fond of classical music. But then again, as you say, there isn't much for strings in the way of contemporary music - in hunting for public domain sheet music all the contemporary violin stuff seems to be a throwback to earlier styles so I tend to think why bother with imititation, I might as well play the real thing. I'd love to play some jazz or blues, but they don't cater to strings.

You could always freestyle, write your own music, or adapt some modern music to play on strings.
I love classical music. One of my best friend's father has a bluegrass band and I've grown quite fond of playing bluegrass music.

Good point rumsmuggler. I've never really tried much improvising or working stuff out myself (though I've always been somewhat tone-deaf which is probably part of the problem).

Are you obliged to know the entire oeuvre of John Philip Sousa?

I was wondering. Does anyone have any advice on marching? I'm having a really hard time with it and I didn't march the entire season my freshman year. So I'm really worried since marching band is going to start next month.

Well, I have marched in two parades in high school. Well my advice is to get as much air in as possilbe, especially in tough spots. I don't need to tall anyone about my lack of air during the parade; I just couldn't sustain it the entire way. Also, look at your center guide (they are in the middle column of the band). Make sure to stay in step with them. Other than that, make sure that you play as well as you can.

Yeah I've noticed that when I did march that breathing and playing at the same time was a big problem.

I found it rather simple to play the clarient and march at the same time. However, iamgine playing something 2 1/2 times larger; you run out of air much faster. Take it from me; I know.
