Seeing as how there hasn't been a dedicated Pink Floyd thread in close to four years, and given the success of Pink Floyd in the JC's Top 100 albums list, I thought it would be good to discuss the band's many albums over the years. Seems like it would be a good idea to list the band's various members over the years:

Syd Barrett
Rick Wright
Nick Mason
Roger Waters
David Gilmour

Those are the big five for the band. There have been others, of course, but I think most of the discussion will center on those five people. Barrett, of course, fronted the band in its early days, steering it through its great debut album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and holding on for a smaller contribution for its follow-up, A Saucerful of Secrets (the only album Barrett and Gilmour were both appear on, not counting stuff like Echoes, before succumbing to a madness that was never officially diagnosed. David Gilmour replaced him, though he originally just covered for his erratic appearance(s). From there, the band slowly coalesced into the force that left its mark on music history. The group's lineup was cemented from the next LP album and on (Ummagumma), but the sound of the band was in flux and by several members' admission, Pink Floyd didn't find its footing until Meddle. That album's follow-up, Dark Side of the Moon, branded their mark on popular culture and they didn't look back for the rest of the 1970s.

So, with that, I'll start with the first album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn:

Side one--

1. Astronomy Domine
2. Lucifer Sam
3. Matilda Mother
4. Flaming
5. Pow R. Toc H.
6. Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk

Side two--

1. Interstellar Overdrive
2. The Gnome
3. Chapter 24
4. The Scarecrow
5. The Bike

This is for the U.K. release. The U.S. release track listing can be found at the album's wikipedia page.

Unfortunately, I have not yet had the chance to listen to the full album. But, I know a number of others have, and no doubt have plenty to say about an album that is considered by many to be one of the better debuts by a band. I've also heard numerous versions of Astronomy Domine, and it's a memorable beginning for the band.

Are any performance clips of this album available?

If we're going in chronological order, sadly I won't be able to comment until we get to Meddle, because that's where my interest in and familiarity with the band begin. Syd Barret I could take or leave. But I will say for now that I love the Floyd, and own all their records in one form or another from Meddle through Division Bell. I saw them on the Division Bell tour -- their last -- on Easter Day of 1994, and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Recently I tried the "Dark Side of the Rainbow" experiment, and had a blast, but that perhaps is a footnote to a remarkable and highly influential career. My favorite Floyd record: Animals (1977).

Syd Barrett was such a nutter to come up with such lyrics yet it's pretty cool. Piper is psychadelic acid rock at it's finest. Aside from the theme to David the Gnome, this album provides the best song I've ever heard dedicated to one. tongue

The very end of the album pretty much sums up the entire thing.

The first four tracks of the album are gold. After that, I don't really care for the indulgence of Pow R. Toc H, but the rest of the tracks are solid. And what can you say about Bike? Gerald's getting rather old, but he's a good mouse.

Floyd is one of my favorite bands, but unfortunately I find thier first album next to unlistenable. They truly sound drastically, incredibly different from how they would sound and the sort of work they would do five years later.

Besides "Interstellar Overdive", "Astronomy Domine", and to some extent thier first two singles prior to this album ("Apples and Oranges" and "See Emily Play"), I find the early work horrid. And even the songs I just mentioned are not fantastic by my opinion.

Roger Waters has certainly come a long way from "Take up thy Stethoscope and Walk", which was his first song, and only contribution on the debut album.

I'm pretty much with Gonk on this one. Having come to know the band primarily through The Wall starting in 1979, and discovering their music backwards/disordered through the 80s -- Wish You Were Here next, then Dark Side, Animals and finally Meddle -- I find the early sound of Piper and Ummagumma is so different from what I came to love about the Floyd as to be unpalatable.

"Bike" is a funny song, though. "He's a very good mouse".

I will concede that Ummagumma is indeed pretty much unlistenable. I think its the band trying to find direction after Barrett's departure. At least it comes with a sweet poster that hangs on my bedroom wall.

The biggest reason I'm a Floyd fan is because of David Gilmour. Not the only reason, but certainly the biggest. His absence on this album keeps me from hurrying to listen to it, along with its higher cost.

I don't think Pink Floyd could ever have turned out the way they did if Barrett had been healthy. Gilmour's soaring guitar style was too integral to take away and not have a completely different kind of band result, particularly since Barrett's departure meant Waters took the band in a different direction.

Barrett died recently, after years as a recluse, didn't he? Am I thinking of the right person?

You're right. He released a couple solo albums shortly after his departure from the band, and then lived in seclusion for the rest of his life. There was a picture of him on his way from getting groceries, riding a bike, a few years ago. I think it was in Vanity Fair.

I myself thought the timing of Barrett's passing very... disturbing.

I don't think it was a cooincidence that it came within a year or so of Floyd's brief re-emergence at Live Earth. Although I don't think it's appropriate by any stretch of the imagination to say that the band should bear guilt for his death, it's known that Barrett felt very depressed about not being able to be part of his former band, and it's possible the reunion might have had an effect on him.

Sad, sad.
