Well, you could argue that it led into Echoes, which could be their single greatest track.

AHM was my first Floyd tape, used to love the title suite and "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" is probably their funniest song. 13 minutes of some guy eating eggs and cereal. That's so Prog!!!

Moving on to the album that positioned Pink Floyd for its explosion in 1973, we arrive at Meddle. The album is a curious mix of past and future music for the band. The album's 23 minute closer, Echoes, could be thought of as the band distilled into a single track. It has moments that, well, echo their future work, particularly Dark Side of the Moon and a swirling middle phase that has more in common with past albums.

1. One of these days
2. A Pillow of Winds
3. Fearless
4. San Tropez
5. Seamus
6. Echoes

Echoes is a favorite of mine, which isn't quite unique in the Floyd world. It also probably was synched to the last part of Kubrick's 2001.

Awesome record. I've always thought the first track ("Days") sounds uncannily like the Doctor Who theme music, especially the brief high-pitched keyboard solo in the middle section. I wonder if the band was inspired by the Doctor, or if this is coincidence? (Incidentally, when I saw the band live in '94, they played "Days" in between "Time" and the "Great Gig in the Sky". During the climax of the song, the giant pigs came out of their cabinets to either side of the stage; their eyes glowed; it was freaky.) "Fearless" is one of my fave Floyd tunes: very thoughtful lyrics and a unique chord structure. (I play this one on the drums with my guitar-playing friend.) "Echoes" of course is a sonic masterpiece and seems to be a kind of template for the band's later, expansive work. I could live without "San Tropez", but "Seamus" always brings a smile to my face. The use of canine howls over music, used so clumsily and goofily here, prefigures the more sophisticated use of this technique in "Dogs" on the 1977 Animals.

I've probably listened to Meddle a few hundred times in the last few years, and I plan on contuining my tradition of late-night work at the drawing board or computer, while this excellent, sometimes hypnotic record plays in the background.

Except for "Days" I haven't heard anything off of this one. I started listening to the title track but... as ashamed as I am to admit it... I got bored and stopped.

shock

I'm stunned. You, a real Floyd fan, haven't heard anything but the first track? I think of Echoes as brilliant, and in fact just listened to it again. It's the first time Gilmour is really Gilmour in my mind. If you made it through several minutes and still got bored, well, nothing will help, but stick with it that long if you didn't.

I love every track on this album. I just wish radio stations were able to play the majority of Pink Floyd songs but they're just too damn long for that medium.

Echoes is just brilliant.

Knightwriter, I love the floyd, I gotta say that Meddle is among my favorites, and I especially love Fearless.

But a quick nod to Atom Heart Mother, while not as great as later floyd works, the title track really is worth listening to, it shows the band's growth and their creativity as artists, I don't think the band could have made their later albums without going through an Atom Heart Mother phase. It's like Floyd's "Help!" album, it's where they start to break free of their old sound and start creating their new sounds. (As you know Floyd made most of their classics in Studio 2 at Abbey Road where all the Beatles records were made, and they were in the next recording booth while the Beatles were making Sgt. Pepper and Syd Barret was still in the band.)

EDIT:

Just read the first page, and wasn't Barret also briefly featured on Ummagumma, or is he just given a writing credit? Furthermore, Syd Barret's legacy looms large in floyd, because it seems like pretty much every album references him in some way, heck, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here are all about Barret aren't they? I mean, "if the band you're in starts playing different tunes" and all that, that's about Syd right? And Wish you were Here, that's about Syd again isn't it?

Seems like Waters and the rest of the band were deeply affected by Barret's loss, and it was singing about that loss that created so many hit records...

Thank you guys for propping my thread up happy .

From my perspective, Floyd would never have become what it did if Barrett had stayed in the band and been the leader. It would have meant no David Gilmour, and thus my primary reason for liking them would have never come into being.

On Echoes, you can hear the full fledged band they were about to become. Gilmour must have used the same guitar for Echoes and Time, because it sounds the same.

Oh, no doubt, Gilmour and Waters made Floyd the international phenomenon they were, but Syd was the catalyst that led to it, i mean, nearly a decade without him and they are still singing half hour two part opus's to him like "Shine on you crazy diamond!"

I bought Meddle in the early 90's at the recomendation of a friend who knew that Dark Side of the Moon was one of my favourite albums. There are great things on this album: A Pillow of Winds is melodic and soothing, Fearless has good lyrics tied to great music, and Echoes is an obvious precursor to Dark Side of the Moon. However, it's not all good: San Tropez totally breaks the mood for me, feeling more Steely Dan than Floyd, while Seamus I just flat-out hate. I always skip Seamus. Always.

I'm no great Pink Ployd authority; I have three of their albums, of which this is one. Meddle probably gets the least play. It's not that I don't like it, but it consists of six tracks, two of which I skip. I don't even love Echoes as much as most people seem to - I like it, but I don't love it.

For me, Meddle will always be in the shadow of Dark Side of the Moon. I think it is the band reaching out to what they would become, but just falling short.
