yes, how unfortunate that i chose his (apparently) least-loved film for the title of this thread but i find it so fitting to talk about him in those terms. you see, ang lee appreciation is one of my hobbies
here's a bit of more recent appreciation for you, but instead of jumping in with lust, caution right away i'd like to follow the time-honoured amphitheatre tradition and discuss him film by film? that way i think we might cover all our bases.
recently i've seen a proper book discussing his oeuvre The Cinema of Ang Lee: The Other Side of the Screen which i'll report back about once i've read it but the criticism seems to be held at bay for some reason so far. considering his output this is easily explained: to me he has covered every conceivable genre and made it his own without fail. he has used original stories and short stories, comic strips and myth as basis for his films, he seldom uses the same actors twice (at least to my recollection), there's virtually no MO to cling to, other than absolute versatility.
opinions?

I didn't think Lee's Hulk was all that bad. I'm not at all familiar with the Hulk source material-my taste in superheroes is dudes with pointy-eared cowls and bad attitudes -so could someone please tell me just what was so horrible about this movie? :P

I liked Ang Lee's Hulk. He made the mistake of turning it into an art house film, but I still liked it.

The Hulk was an average film with middling quality for directing. Lee's triumph, however, is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It remains my favorite film to this day.

Ang Lee must know how to get incredible performances out of his actors - The Ice Storm is a great example of a cast working flawlessly together.

Crouching Tiger is great, and what I have seen from his other films are pretty good as well.

I love unabshedly every film he's made that I've seen:
Crouching Tiger - One of the best films of all time. 5 stars.
Ice Storm - a moving character drama with unexpected surprises and impeccable performances. 4 stars.
HULK - an experimental arthouse Greek tragedy superhero movie. Awesome. 4 stars.
Brokeback Mountain - possibly the most realistic portrayal of romantic love -- and the consequences of same when it's forbidden -- ever filmed. 4 1/2 stars.
What an incredible oeuvre! I haven't seen Lust, Caution, but I plan on doing so very soon.

i would like to start this off with a discussion of his early films. and because i'm imperialist and ignorant, i'll have to lump them in together at this stage.
Pushing Hands (1992) was a success in Taiwan both among critics and at the box office. It received eight nominations in the Golden Horse Film Festival, Taiwan's premier film festival. Inspired by the success, Hsu collaborated with Lee in their second film, The Wedding Banquet (1993), which won the Golden Bear in the Berlin Film Festival and was nominated as the Best Foreign Language Film in both the Golden Globe and the Academy Awards. In all, this film collected eleven Taiwanese and international awards and made Lee a rising star.
Lee's first two movies were based on stories of Taiwanese Americans, and both were filmed in the US. In 1995, Hsu invited Lee to return to Taiwan to make Eat Drink Man Woman, a film that depicts traditional values, modern relationships, and family conflicts in Taipei. The film was once again a box office hit and was critically acclaimed. For a second consecutive year, Lee's film received the Best Foreign Language Film nomination in both the Golden Globe and Academy Awards, as well as in the British Academy Award. Eat Drink Man Woman won five awards in Taiwan and internationally, including the Best Director from Independent Spirit. Hollywood optioned the film rights and remade it into Tortilla Soup (2001, dir. María Ripoll). This is one of the rare occasions in which a Taiwanese film was remade outside the island.
i stole this from wiki.
out of these i have only seen eat drink man woman so far which even when i had no clue about it being an ang lee film made a lasting impression on me. maybe it's to do with the outrageous amount of cooking in it, maybe with the way it focuses on the family so much. it's a very warm and precise film, concerned with communication or the lack thereof and the gap between generations. i'm not surprised it was remade.

Easily one of my favorite movies. The final scene between the father and his eldest daughter is one of the best scenes I can recall ever watching.
And then, Crouching Tiger. I think most everyone is in agreement that this is an amazing movie. And wasn't this sort of Yo-yo Ma's break into fame? Anyway, the soundtrack remains one of my favorites.

Yo-Yo Ma was famous way before Crouching Tiger. His Cello skills are badass.

well, i think both the wedding banquet as well as eat drink man woman got remade in hollywood or thereabouts, so you could watch these.
i'm still secretly astonished that the transition he made from taiwan to the US was so incredibly smooth, john woo completely failed in this regard.
