I just don't buy that the DJ would not wanna play the song just because of the list, it's just not that appaling a thing to do. And how does Rachel even know the phone number to the radiostation. I do like the song though, even if I prefer its later appearance in the next season.

I love Chandler's short story.

"It was summer, and it was hot. Rachel was there. A lonely gray couch. "Oh look!" cried Ned, and the kingdom was his forever. The end."

0209: The One With Phoebe’s Dad

- “Christmas balls” – hee
- Why was there no thanksgiving episode this season?
- Gunther’s first line ever: “Yeah”
- Love how Phoebe’s been fooled by her grandmother all those years.
- Another great story about Chandler’s dad.
- The episode starts to drag halfway through.
- The tag with the gift giving is good.
- Overall a forgettable episode.

C +

0210: The One With Russ

- Good teaser.
- Our first real look at fun Bobby in his normal funny state, too bad it doesn’t last…
- Love Joey’s delayed realization.
- I’m not a huge fan of this portrayal of alcoholism or how to deal with it. “I’m gonna try to stop” is not exactly a great approach to living a sober life. Why no mention of actual treatment and twelve step? Not that I’m convinced Fun Bobby’s actually an alcoholic...
- Days of Our Lives!
- “We can all sleep together and then one of us can get amnesia!” – hee
- The concept of Russ is so strange and could really backfire, but it is actually great. Scwimmer is genius in the role.
- I’m still not thrilled with Estelle.
- Russ and Ross meeting: Hilarious! Nice to get some old school split screen action too. Their later scene with Chandler is also great. I wish Russ had stayed for more than one episode.
- Joey’s story is fine and Monica’s is tolerable, this episode is all about the Russ.
- Drake Ramoray!
- The random reappearance of Julie is great!
- Overall some good and some not so good.

B -

2.11 "The One With The Lesbian Wedding"

* Episode Number: 35
* Original Air Date: January 18, 1996
* Written by: Doty Abrams
* Directed by: Tommy Schlamme
* Guest Cast:
o Jane Sibbett (Carol Willick)
o Jessica Hecht (Susan Bunch)
o Marlo Thomas (Sandra Green)
o Phil Leeds (Mr. Adleman)
o Candice Gingrich (the Minister)

Detailed summary

Carol and Susan decide to get married and Ross has a hard time with it; Rachel's mom pays her a visit and drops a bombshell; Phoebe gains the spirit of a deceased woman.

Good episode. I find Phoebe's storyline too weird for the show and yet freakin hilarious. tongue

0211: The One With The Lesbian Wedding

- Being a fan of the Geller-Willick-Bunch dynamic, I like the teaser quite a bit.
- Smell the fart acting – hee
- Phoebe channeling Mrs. Adelman is great! I wonder if this is Phoebe being crazy or an actual supernatural presence, I think I prefer Phoebe just being crazy.
- I find Rachel’s mom strangely amusing…
- “Unattractive nude man” – hee
- Phil Leeds is great as Mr. Adelman.
- “What’s new in sex?” – hee
- I love the Ross and Carol scene. I like how the show uses these big events to get Ross closer to total acceptance of the situation. I also find the allusion to Carol’s parents being slightly homophobic interesting; it adds to the realism to the world that not everybody is totally on the same page.
- The wedding is actually quite nice, even moving…
- No obvious faults in this one.

It's been a while since I've seen a bunch of the early season episodes, but does Carol have second thoughts about going through with it (or Susan) because of parental issues and Ross -- despite obviously still not quite being over Carol -- convince them to go through with it because they love each other and damn everyone else?

Or am I completely making up an episode in my head?

And am I mixing up lesbian women / Ross' ex-wife in my head?

Carol doesn't want to go through with it because her parents don't approve of her sexuality. So Ross steps in and gives her away. So yes, you're right.

I sort of like this episode, but I hate every episode with Susan in it, because she is a completely unlikeable selfish arrogant person with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I've been realllllly busy. So I'll just briefly catch up:

2.05 "The One With Five Steaks and an Eggplant"

An interesting attempt at some economic realism. It's obvious to the regular viewer that something's a little off when three of the six look like they can afford to live in Manhattan, one on the borderline (Phoebe), and the other two living hand-to-mouth (Rachel & Joey). Hansen's spot-on: Monica's surprise firing doesn't really resolve anything, other than some sentimental "let's all forget our differences and pull together"-type stuff.

B-

2.06 "The One With the Baby on the Bus"

Guess I'm alone on this one: I found it hilarious. Any time Chandler & Joey get some slapstick time in (or just Chandler-alone slapstick) is a win for me. I've noticed that in certain syndication broadcasts their mad dash after baby Ben is snipped: when they first give chase after the bus, they round the corner and think they've caught up, only to find three identical buses all side by side. This shot sometimes gets edited; dunno why. The ensuing scene in the city offices ID'ing Ben always cracks me up.

This one also continues the tradition of "special guest stars" on Friends. Some work out, some not so much. This was one of the guest roles that don't really work for me. Chrissie Hynde playing Jane-average cafe troubadour is a little tough to buy. But her guest shot isn't nearly as awkward as Brad Pitt's much later. It's a weird sitcom world where Brad Pitt is "someone else" but Charlton Heston plays himself. Whatever.

A

2.07 "The One Where Ross Finds Out"

Nothing to add on this one that hasn't been said. But I do like the slapstick when Rachel nearly tackles Ross to get the phone away from him. Very Three's Company.

B

2.08 "The One With the List"

This one's funny, but by this point I was getting the feeling that the writers (perhaps under NBC's orders) were deliberately dragging out the "Ross and Rachel" drama, trying to milk it for all it was worth. I think this is another one of those episodes where the R&R drama was prolonged for the benefit of new viewers who only recently tuned into the show, and to give them some build-up for the eventual payoff a few eps later.

Too bad Michael McKean couldn't get a permanent guest role on a show like this. Anybody from Spinal Tap showing up = win. cool

B+

2.09 "The One With Phoebe's Dad"

The fact that I wouldn't remember this one if A_J didn't post the description says it all.

C+

2.10 "The One With Russ"

The Russ/Ross meet is good. The show does keep up the occasional split-screen when Phoebe & her twin Ursula get some screen time.

Ditto. My dad's an alcoholic (in recovery) and the toll it takes on friends/family is hard to laugh at if you've been through it. Very poor, wistful handling of a serious subject. Still think this is another Season 1 plot device being re-tread for newcomers...

B

2.11 "The One With The Lesbian Wedding"

Back on track with this one. Love the whole thing. Phoebe's new-ageism gets a good lampoon. Now here's a case of smart guest-casting with Marlo Thomas. Her own sitcom past makes her a perfect fit as Rachel's mother.

However, the Candice Gingrich cameo is dated and clunky: if you didn't read the credits afterward, you'd have no idea who she was or why it was a big deal for her to appear (she's Republican heavyweight Newt Gingrich's gay sister). Her being there is like the writers' silent shot at the Republicans taking back Congress & the Contract With America and gay (marriage) rights being debated back then. A 20 year old viewer watching the show now has no context for any of this, so it would fly over their head. The point could have been made with just about any other actor/actress in the role.

One last thing: I totally agree about the Susan character. She comes off as arrogant & man-hating. Kind of odd to use an old lesbian stereotype in an ep that's supposed to be gushing with sympathy for gays & lesbians. plain

A (C- for the Gingrich cameo)

Nice reviews happy

Please, don't get me started on Susan. I'll stop there otherwise there'll be an essay

And so I'll quote the following point you made and comment happy

"It's a weird sitcom world where Brad Pitt is "someone else" but Charlton Heston plays himself. Whatever. "

I don't recall any "celeb" playing themselves apart from Charlton. So I'd say that Charlton is the "someone else" rather than Brad. We've had.....well I won't list them all, but lots and lots of celebs. But I don't recall anyone being themselves apart from Mr H.

Jean-Claude Van Damme. Some would call him a celeb.

I thought Brad Pitt did a good job by the way, but more on that whenever we get to that episode. And I never had anything against Susan either...

Actually, I think this conundrum is on full display later in this very same season: the sweeps episode where Jean Claude Van Damme, Brooke Shields, and Julia Roberts all have cameos in the same ep.

IIRC, Van Damme plays himself, but Shields plays a stalker of Joey's "Drake Ramoray" soap character and Roberts plays a girl Chandler once taunted in childhood. Roberts (at least then) was way too big of an 'A' List celebrity to buy as a cameo role. I guess I just find it weird that an actor/actress would usually play an in-show fictional character, but other celebs who are just as 'A' List might play themselves, all within the same fictional universe. Just a little pet peeve I have.

EDIT: looks like I was beaten to the punch while I was typing away. But at least the others got Van Damme right away. Damn, we all need to get a life, don't we? silly
