Next: Old North Bridge

Location: Concord, MA, USA

Reason: Important and decisive battle site

[imagehttp://rowinphoto.com/concord/north_bridge.jpg]

The site of one of the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. British troops in Boston were sent to Concord to destroy an ammunition stockpile. Warned by Paul Revere and William Dawes, a group of the colonists--known as the Minute Men--gathered, and believed that the British were firing the town. They were actually burning gun carriages. A shot was fired; a volley came from the Minute Men, and the British retreated, rather to the surprise of the colonists.

The bridge has been rebuilt many times.

Next: Sutter's Fort

Location: Sacramento, CA, USA

Reason: The fort that became a city...very quickly

Originally called 'New Helvetia' (New Switzerland), it was founded by John Sutter, a Swiss immigrant, who received 50,000 acres from the Mexican government. At his height, he owned 150,000 acres. He sent help to the Donner party in 1847. But in 1848, gold was discovered, and Sutter's employees left for the goldfields, and his pastures and crops were destroyed by gold seekers. He deeded his remaining land to his son, Augustus, who set about building the City of Sacramento.

Next: Alcatraz Prison

Location: San Francisco Bay, CA, USA

Reason: One of the world's most notorious and sinister prisons.

First used in 1850 for a lighthouse, and then as a military fortress. In 1912, they started using it as a military prison. In 1933, the American government acquired it from the military, and started using it as a federal prison. During its 29 years history as a federal prison. Famous inmates included Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelley and Robert Stroud (the 'Birdman of Alcatraz') There were no official successful escapes--though Frank Morris and John and Clarence Anglin did escape in 1962, and were presumed drowned.

Alcatraz is fun. In a scary, twisted way.

Yay, finally a place I've actually been to. Alcatraz was fun, and as a museum worker I was really impressed by how they presented the place.

Here it is a bit closer.

Next: The Golden Gate Bridge

Location: San Francisco Bay, CA, USA

Reason: Engineering marvel

At first deemed to be impossible, commenced in 1933, and completed 1937. The towers were the tallest to date. The colour is to make them visible in the fog.

Memorable in Hitchcock's "Vertigo".

Such a pretty, iconic bridge. It's too bad that you have to pay and wait forever to drive over it.

I didn't know it was a toll bridge.

It didn't go down during the last big earthquake, or did parts of it?

It's a toll bridge all right, in both directions. Last count, around $5 or $6. doh!

Zaz, you're thinking of the Bay Bridge that experienced a section collapsing during the 1989 quake. The Golden Gate was in the clear.

Unfortunately, the Golden Gate is also the most popular place to commit suicide in America.

Probably due to the bridge tolls. 5 or 6 dollars? You gotta be kidding me.

It is. Rather boring.

The Old North Bridge is cool though. A lot of that area in Concord is well preserved -- it's a nice place to go for a walk. I saw a re-enactment there too one year. It was fun.
