How many per year?

The Golden Gate Bridge District doesn't really keep tabs anymore, on account of they don't want to publicize all the jumps and create even more imitation jumps. But it's been accepted that there's an average of one jump every two weeks = 24 in an "average" year. I once heard a guy claiming to be a member of the US Coast Guard calling into a local radio show and claimed that it was really more like 6 or 7 per month, on account of some jumping at night--despite that pedestrians aren't allowed to travel by foot across the bridge overnights--and that the USCG usually has to retrieve them. (Hey, really uplifting topic we've got here tongue )

But the GGBD recently passed a measure that will allow for a suicide-jump barrier to be erected. It's an idea that's been kicked around for decades, but believe it or not, one of the biggest reasons why people successfully fought against a barrier being built was that it would "ruin" the bridge's aesthetics of a spectacular view of the Bay & the SF skyline. Yes, folks, the bridge's need to be "pretty" was more important that saving lives.

I don't see the point. The jumpers will just find somewhere else.

Next: Mission Dolores

Location: San Francisco, CA

Reason: Oldest building in San Francisco

One of the few surviving buildings from old San Francisco. It weathered the 1906 earthquake, though the church beside it was damaged.

Heart Castle

Purchased in 1865 by George Hearst, then a ranch of about 40,000 acres. Hearst inherited it from his mother in 1919, and by then was 250,000 acres. Hearst decided to build a castle on the land, and hired a female architect, Laura Morgan. The building continued for years until Hearst suffered a financial crisis in the late 30's. On his death in the 50's, none of his five children wanted to maintain the estate, and it was given to the state of California. It was, to everyone's surprise, a giant hit and began to make money immediately.

Having lived on the central coast of California all my life, I've been to Hearst Castle a few times. It's pretty impressive, especially the grounds. I like the zebras they keep. My main memory about it though is how utterly disappointed I was the first time I saw it and realized that it wasn't a castle at all, just a very large house. My nine year old self was crushed at not being able to see turrets or drawbridges or any of that King Arthur stuff.

No, the Citizen Kane castle was sets and miniatures. But it was obviously based on Hearst Castle.

Next: Japanese Internment Camps

Location: Manzanar, CA

Reason: Where hundreds of families were detained

Not FDR's finest hour, the Detainment of the Japanese residents, many of them American citizens, caused terrible suffering. It happened in Canada, too. Manzanar is the best preserved camp.

Reason: The first film studio to open to the public.

The founder, Carl Laemmle, started the tours in 1915. There are now ones in Florida, Japan, and one under construction in Singapore.
