Next: Disneyland

Location: Anaheim, CA

Reason: Famous theme park

Walt Disney was disappointed by the attractions in a small Oakland park, and so an idea was born to build his own. He first wanted a site in Burbank, but was turned down. An orange grove in Anaheim came next. The park was opened in 1955.

Never been there myself.

Finally another one I've actually been too. I'm quite proud of the fact that I managed to avoid any Mickey Mouse characters while there, I blame Miana.

Disney World is far superior.

They are two completely different things, though. Disneyland is the original, obviously, but it's not just that. It's designed to be a day theme park, the kind that were around in Disney's day but which he blew out of the water. And it's only gotten so much better in the theming since then. It's not just good because it's classic. It's a truly great park, a world treasure. And I'm really glad I get to go all the time.

Disney World, on the other hand, is an experience unlike any other theme park. It's designed to basically be a week long adventure. And every single thing in it helps draw you in and keep you there, outside of RL, for that whole time. It's an amazing feet of Disney magic. It truly reverts you to childhood and optimism for a week.

Incidentally, I am going to D-land on Monday, then I'm leaving Tuesday for my first trip to Disney World in 10 years grin It's also my 10th trip.

I can see the distinction- yeah, I guess Disneyland is more on par with your typical Six Flags park in that you can pretty much do it in a day. Disney World is definitely a week vacation- more, if you really want to explore most of it or actually relax at any point. wink

Why?

I usually get over to Disneyland about once a year. Nothing wrong with it.

My Mom's obsessed with Disney, so my parents have gone to WDW for summer vacation pretty much every year for the past 2 decades, and likewise I've been done with them quite a bit. At this point it's hard for me to even imagine just what the heck I'd do to occupy my time if I ever took a vacation elsewhere.

Next: Forest Lawn Memorial Park

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Reason: Pioneering 'optimistic' burying grounds

Founded in 1906, and in 1917 Hubert Eaton took over the management. He directed that the cemetery would be landscaped like a park and had statutes and plaques instead of gravestones. There are patriotic features, and special areas--the heart-shaped 'Babyland' for infants, Eventide, Graceland, and Dawn of Tomorrow. (!!!)

There are 'packages' for each financial level. The commoditization of grief.

I've been there repeatedly and seen movies there several times, and I must say this is one of those historic sites where, when you see it in person, you go "is this it?" What's so special about it? I mean, there's nothing wrong with it, but it just didn't do much for me.

I agree with that assessment. I never went into it though, just stayed outside and took some photos.
