Overpopulation, deforestation and climate change. Malthusian collapse. But Mesa Verde is simply amazing.

I saw the last two on a cross-country trip with my parents in the early 80s.

Mesa Verde is pretty amazing, if if only seen from afar.+

The Arch on the other hand is utterly meh. St Louis has to be the worst city I've ever spent more than 5 minutes in. Humid, dirty, crumbling. I'd like to think it's recovered in the past 25 years, but I'm not sure.

Next: Canyon de Chelly

Location: Near Chinle, Arizona, USA

Reason: An outstanding landscape, home to ruins over two millennia old

Canyon de Chelly is 131 square miles and one of three canyons in Navajoland, the largest preserve in the USA. It contains amazing ruins of the Anasazi people, ancestors of the Pueblos.

I've been to Canyon de Chelly. It was amazingly beautiful, especially at sunset.

Next: The O. K. Corral

Location: Tombstone, Arizona, USA

Reason: Scene of the Wild West's most famous gunfight

The famous gunfight took place in a small lot behind the corral.

Tombstone was founded by a silver strike in 1877. It was often violent, and at the time of the gunfight, Virgil Earp was sheriff and Morgan and Wyatt were his deputies. They decided to disarm some of the outlaws in town (it was illegal to carry arms in the town), and they killed Billy Clanton and two others, while Morgan, Virgil and Doc Holliday were injured.

I went there once, before I moved out to Tucson, and from what I hear it's gotten pretty wretched to visit Tombstone, what with the dirt roads and all. Not to mention the paper mache dummies, which they still have, over 10 years after I went. Really, the entire site isn't done the justice it deserves. frustrated

They just discussed Tombstone, AZ, on Ghost Adventures. They reenacted the gunfight at the OK Corral to try and rile up the spirits that still reside within the city.

I've never been myself, but I have visited Doc Holliday's grave in Glenwood Springs, CO. It's really neat, everyone leaves poker chips, cards, etc, rather than flowers.

The whole Wyatt Earp/Doc Holliday legend is one of my favorite stories of the Old West. I'd love to see Tombstone someday--the OK Corral, the Bird Cage Theatre, all of it.

I like the poker chip idea...does anyone live in Tombstone now, or is it a ghost town?

Well, I imagine the main drag has been preserved, but it's been built up around. There are people who still work there as curators, etc.

The area of the gunfight is quite small...

It looks like an old railway station.
