The Karate Kid Trilogy in my opinion is one of the better trilogies. Most people agree that the original is great. Personally I think it has gotten even better with age, and I dare say may even be a masterpiece. I think that is partly because if anything the issue of school bullies has become even more of an issue since the 80s.

Im personally not interested in the remake but feel free to talk about it here if you wish. I hope Columbia uses it as an excuse to come out with another box set of the trilogy and this time I hope they give it the treatment that it deserves just like the Back to the Future Trilogy got. The last box set did well with special features on the original but I was disappointed that the sequels did not get any special features.

I think both sequels are good acceptable and enjoyable movies even though they are not near as artistically superior as the original. A big issue I would like to talk about is the bashing of Part 3. I really enjoyed Part 3 and I actually prefer it to Part 2. Im amazed it gets the kind of harsh treatment that it gets. Im horrifed to think that some people might even think it is in the same ballpark as that horrid 4th movie that I dont consider to be a Karate Kid movie.

For one thing, I think Terry Silver is the best Karate Kid villain. I loved hating him far more than I liked hating John Kreese. The guy who played Silver is a real martial artist with a blackbelt in two forms of martial arts.

I will admit that Part 3 definately has flaws, espeacially in the logic of the story. I consider it to be a flawed, darker version of the orginal.

I think the big problem that people had with the movie is that there seems to be a major continuity problem betweeen the second and third film in regards to Daniel's development as a fighter and his opponents. Chosen(the villain from Part 2) is arguably the best fighter of Daniel's opponents. He is the top student of an Okinawan karate master and trains American military police units. Even before he beat him with the drum technique, Daniel was holding his own against him pretty well in the final fight. Then in Part 3, Daniel is continuously getting his butt kicked by Mike Barnes, and also throughout the entire tournament fight before Daniel finally wins with Kata. Also, Daniel arguably took a more fierce beating from Chosen but he toughed it out all by himself. Then in Part 3, Miyagi has to talk Daniel out of quitting the fight against Barnes.

But I think you could blame this as much on Part 2 even though Part 2 occured before Part 3. It seems as though the filmmakers looked back on what they did in Part 2 and decided for better or for worse that they had gotten a bit too much out there in the fantasy realm where anything goes, and they may have wanted to come back down to earth for Part 3. They probably wanted to get back to some of the flavor from the original. One does have to admit that it is a bit unrealistic for Daniel to beat the top student of an Okinawan karate master after he has had only 9 months of training.

It was Hilary Swank, if memory serves.

I've seen one (good), two (fair) and not seen three.

Yeah I`m the same - seen the first 2, never bothered watching 3.

I really enjoyed the 1st one when I saw it, but I think it`s very much a movie "of it`s time" ie the 80s - plus the fact I was about 12 when I saw it helped me enjoy it, I think I`d probably hate it if I saw it for the 1st time now.

Well, you'll be able to find out when The Kung Fu Kid comes out wink

The problem with the third movie is it doesn't develop the story or characters in a forward progression- Daniel reverts in skill and relationships with characters, and in general just feels like a big backwards step.

The second film is still my favorite, even though I feel the first film is the best. I really liked the second film taking the conflict outside of a tournament- instead of pride or proving the bad guys wrong, the stakes were much more real for Daniel, Miyagi and the town.

wild_karde, if you are reading "Lonesome Dove" here's some advice: don't read "The Streets of Laredo" (the sequel)

I dont count the 4th one with Hillary Swank because it didnt have the writer and director from the first three. And besides Miyagi, it had none of the same characters.

One of the great things about Part 3 is that we finally get to see the full extent of Miyagi's power. In the first two we only get to see him fight relatively inexperienced teenagers. In Part 3 we get to see him fight full grown adults who are in thier prime.

I like it in Part 3 when Silver makes fun of the crane kick. Normally I dont like it when movies do that kind of self referential stuff, but for me it worked here for some reason.

Seems like that was a common occurrence for some of the bigger name series from around that era:

- RotJ brought back the Tatooine first act followed by another Death Star
- Indy and the Last Crusade brought back the Nazis and a more sprawling adventure
- The main conflict of Back to the Future III revolved around a creative solution to fix the DeLorean in order to return to the future.
- Alien III had no guns, and one alien

I thought Karate Kid 3 was the one with Hilary Swank. Wow, I missed the boat on the third installment.

The original movie is my favorite because it feature Cruel Summer by Banana Rama and Elisabeth Shue.

Seriously though, since I've seen this movie and I cannot wash my car without doing "left circle; right circle." Now show me, Sand the Floor! This movie is a definite classic, like the Bad News Bear.
