It's true. The director of the Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil, X Men, Superman Returns and Valkyrie is going into the Battlestar Galactica business.

Singer signed by Universal for BSG feature

That's really interesting- I remember being excited at the news back when Singer was initially attached to helm the BSG relaunch earlier this decade before Moore took over.

And as good as Moore's BSG was- I've constantly said I'd love to see different takes on BSG over the years. Make BSG something that's remade every 10 or 20 years or so with different takes on the subject material (we've had the campy fun Star Wars rip-off and the ultra-serious quasi-religious soap opera versions- why not something inbetween ala Stargate or B5 in tone?)- but this is too soon after Moore's BSG to do a new BSG. I'd have thought waiting another 5 years at least would have been more appropriate.

Still, I'll look forward to a more fun version of BSG if thats what Singer's gonna aim for (IIRC, when he was in charge of the miniseries project, they even took the original ship model out of storage, so maybe he's still inclined to take that approach). At the very least, hopefully it'll be more Seasons 1-2 of new BSG than 3-4.

Hollywood Insider posted:
Battlestar Galactica is getting the big-screen treatment. Universal Pictures has confirmed blog speculation that Bryan Singer, director of Valkyrie, will take on directing and producing duties for a BSG movie. Glen Larson, who created original series back in 1978, will produce as well. The film is not expected to be a continuation of current popular television show that’s running on the SyFy network but will be a complete re-imagining of the sci-fi lore that was invented by Larson back in the 70s.

I was starting to get excited at the thought of the cast reuniting for a Battlestar feature film.

I'm not going to dismiss this outright based on the success of the most recent series, but it does have me scratching my head as to why they would do this so soon after the series ended. I also get the feeling that no matter how good Singer's version may or may not be it won't be given a fair shake given the absolute worship the new series gets.

I love Singer, and this would probably turn out well, but i have to agree that it strikes me as a bad idea to do it THIS soon after the series, because i don't think the fandom is ready for it.

It would probably bomb.

He should do "Logan's Run" instead.

I don't think it's too soon for a BSG movie. It will be a year or so before the film hits theaters, and by that time BSG fans will be ready for it. I mean, fanboys were ready for The Hobbit flick shortly after Return of the King dropped into movie houses.

I wonderful since this film will be a reimage of the 70's series if Starbuck and Boomer will be dudes.

I recently perused the original BSG, and I was astounded at how Moore's brilliant show came about because a terrible bit of 70s kitch. I like Singer, but I'm passing.

The Hobbit would be apart of the same franchise, same universe. It serves as a direct continuation of the story.

This is a slightly different animal being a re-imagining ariving on the heals of a highly celebrated re-imagining. While there is nothing specific to suggest it can't be good or successful at this point, its a difficult position for the film makers to put themselves in going over the same material that was just done and done so well many herald it as one of the best TV shows in recent memory. That's a difficult act to follow. Given that the film would depend on the support of BSG fans it might prove detrimental to the Box Office returns if the audience is largely apathetic, not wanting to go through another remake so soon after.

Agreed. I also think alot of people will be disappointed that they did this without the TV show's cast, which is a strange decision considering that is EJO on record as saying that The Plan won't be the last Battlestar movie.

I see the point of continuity. However, there is a strong fanbase that will be willing to see a BSG movie eventhough it's not on the same wavelength as the recent series. It's Malibu Stacy and she has a new hat!!!

I was under the impression that BSG on Syfy (hey, at least it's easier to type) only barely drew enough viewers to justify it's full run. It seems to me, if that's indeed the case, that we die hard BSG fans will have little impact on the success or failure of a re-re-imagined version.

If someone else wants to do their own version unrelated to either previous ones, and they want to do a good job and make an awesome science fiction/space opera film, I say more power to them.

The fact is BSG's concept is timeless and can be re-imagined any number of times. I read somewhere (I can't remember where - it could have been one of the show's creators, a web-columnist, or someone on a Theforce.net forum) that BSG was one of those things that could be re-done every so often and change along with society.

I am confused here. It is going to another remake of the series but on the big screen instead? Why do this if it was just remade on TV?

Not that I am complaning about it but just confused.
