From TWOP: Web Series To Watch Out For

"In this day and age, you can watch most of your favorite TV shows online, so it makes sense that more and more people are developing shows solely for the Internet. They may not have the budgets of their slightly-bigger-screen counterparts, but a lot of them have just as many laughs as a prime-time show, and some even get the occasional big-name star (like Joss Whedon's Emmy-winning Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). We've compiled a list of some of the shows you can still watch online in their entirety, so you can get used to the faces that'll someday be beamed into your living room. Or, more likely, so you can get used to how we'll all be watching TV in the future."

First up:

"Rockville, CA"

"Created by The OC creator and Gossip Girl producer Josh Schwartz, this series follows twentysomethings who hang out at a rock club in Los Angeles, complete with rants about the music industry and overhyped bands. One of those twentysomethings? Ryan Hansen, a.k.a. Veronica Mars' Dick Casablancas. Nice."

The Guild

"This series about a group of online role-players stars Felicia Day (Dr. Horrible) as the leader of a ragtag club of misfits. Unfortunately, keeping the team together when relationships go sour and professional and parenting duties call is harder than it looks, and they also have to deal with rival gamers like Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation)."

Tease

"A Midwestern girl from a wealthy family gets a job waiting tables in a strip joint in L.A. in order to gather information for a screenplay she's writing. However, she quickly decides she can get more info by becoming a stripper herself and moving in with one of her fellow dancers (a Diablo Cody V1 lookalike). Unfortunately, her sleazy, engaged ex keeps hanging around, leering and threatening to tell all of their mutual friends about her new career even while he's seeing one of the dancers on the side."

I've never gotten into the whole web series thing that much. But I've been hearing about The Guild for over a year now. So I finally went and watched the first two episodes. Not bad really. I mean, it's not astonishingly great or anything, but Day is an appealing and unpretentious lead with good comic timing and the writing is pretty good ("I came to the physical realm to hold you.")

When you consider that each episode only asks for three minutes, you could do a lot worse.

And, if you want to kick it old school, the first two seasons have already been released on DVD.

The thing about The Guild is that half the cast is clearly better than the other half, especially in the first season. On the whole, though, it's pretty good times, even if certain (usually small) parts of it might as well be in a foreign language for as much as I understand online role playing games.

Star-ving
"
Married With Children star David Faustino and Parker Lewis Can't Lose star Corin Nemec are washed-up actors with no money, but they do have a porn shop, and several get-rich quick schemes. Also, Faustino's wife has left him for Coolio, who is one of numerous celebrity cameos on the series, including Ed O'Neill, Gilbert Gottfried, Seth Green, Alan Thicke, Ed Asner and Kato Kaelin."

The Legend of Neil

"Whenever he engages in auto-erotic asphyxiation while playing Legend of Zelda (which is more often than one might think), gas station attendant Neil gets pulled into the game, where he has to fight his way though forests of rock-throwing imps and stupid orcs just to survive. Luckily, if he gets hurt, he can eat a heart-shaped cookie or simply hook up with the promiscuous, 6-inch-tall fairy (Felicia Day) who lives in the woods."

Now *there's* a premise that wouldn't make the networks!

Dead and Lonely

"Dead and Lonely How do socially awkward vampires meet people, especially people that won't be missed for a while? Online dating. A man who recently split up with his girlfriend thinks he's hit the jackpot when he gets a bite on his dating profile after only one day, but the girl wants to meet up that night, and she's hungry."

The Office Webisodes

"If you like The Office, but wish the show would occasionally focus on people besides Jim, Pam, Michael and Dwight, there is another option. The online-only webisodes of the show focus on different characters, including Kevin, Oscar and, most recently, Creed. Next up, Kelly and Erin form girl group Subtle Sexuality, with Ryan and Andy as backup singers, and one of the webisodes will be a full-length music video for their song, "Male Prima Donna."

There have been some really good office webisodes. I particularly like the first one (The Accountants) and this new one, Subtle Sexuality. It's cool to see some of the lesser characters in The Office get more screen time.

Circle of Eight

"An apartment building full of twentysomethings is the setting of this supernatural series, in which DJ Qualls stars as a creepy guy who claims to be filming a documentary about the building and its inhabitants. When the building's newest resident starts seeing murders that no one else sees, she's driven to investigate what the hell is going on."

Funnel of Darkness

"Remember how funny Twister was? Well, imagine if they were actually trying, and had a smaller budget. Competing against better-equipped rivals, a scraggly, indie-rock-band-looking team of storm chasers in a beaten-up Winnebago named "Bad Brains" try to capture the best footage of tornadoes so they can win the "Funnel Baggin' Rally," with a $10,000 prize."

"Brainstorm"

"When an ad agency's staff gets purged after a disastrous ad campaign (that becomes pornographic when viewed in fast-forward on a DVR), a successful outsider is brought in to head up their pitch to Altoids mints. While the creative team is entranced by his douchey flashiness, one team member has to deal with his personal history with the guy who ruined his life by stealing his idea and his girlfriend. ...It's a comedy, in case that wasn't clear."

Children's Hospital

"This comedy series set in a children's hospital stars Rob Corddry (who also created it), Ed Helms (The Office), Megan Mullally, Ken Marino (The State), Nick Offerman (Parks & Recreation) and Rob Huebel (Human Giant), and is basically a parody of standard medical dramas, but with a lot more clown makeup. Eva Longoria guest-stars in the finale."
