Time Out's 50 Greatest Animated Films

50. Heavy Metal (1981)
Directed by Gerald Potterton

"As an exercise in nakedly exploiting the sweaty peccadilloes of the teenage male, ‘Heavy Metal' would appear at first glance to be a sure-fire winner: an adaptation of stories stripped from the pages of ultraviolent French sex-comic, Métal Hurlant, with a slew of churning metal anthems booming over the top. It's everything an adolescent boy could wish for, non?

Sadly, it's not the breast-filled bloodbath of orgiastic carnage set to the savage cacophony of Iron Maiden and Sabbath that one remembers. What we're in fact offered is a jarringly discontinuous parade of badly drawn cockamamie featuring heavy-set, matronly women riding tigers to the strains of art-rock also-rans Devo covering ‘Working in a Goldmine’ or Stevie Nicks bleating away over an inscrutable snippet of hamstrung space opera. At the time though, it was boss! ALD"

It sounds dire.

Caught it in the drive-in as an underage lad.

Masterpiece? No, but it had its moments. The little safety feature in the cab is one of my favorite moments.
cool

(the title track rocks too...not that it matters tongue )

As usual with this kind of critical "journalism", the author's glee in composing withering witticisms bias him against the movie. In his tittering tirade against the score, he ignores the songs that do rock in Heavy Metal, including BOC during the ghost flight sequence, and of course Hagar's titular anthem. It's not the movie's fault that one dim-witted critic mistakenly remembered that Sabbath and Maiden contributed to the score.

Further, "badly-drawn cockamamie" is an opinion I don't share, and while keeping an eye on the maxim that taste is subjective, as a semi-professional comics illustrator I do feel my judgement trumps a movie critic's over what constitutes good drawing. Harumph.

9. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (2009)

Directed by Phil Lord

This time, the food fights back…

"Too soon? Perhaps, but we’re convinced that this maddeningly ingenious and wildly original smart kids’ adventure will one day take its rightful place in the animated pantheon. In time-honoured cartoon fashion, ‘Cloudy… ’ takes a simple idea – scientist creates machine that turns water into food – and milks it for all its worth: you want spaghetti tornadoes? Ice-cream snowfalls? Palaces made of jelly? Killer Gummi-Bears? ‘Cloudy… ’ has it all.

But perhaps the film’s most notable characteristic is it’s absolute refusal to fall prey to this century’s most annoying cartoon bugbear: cultural referencing. From the industry in-jokes of ‘Shrek’ to the soul-searching self-help psychology of the ‘Ice Age’ movies, animators seem to have forgotten how to make movies for kids without patronising their parents. ‘Cloudy… ’ gets the balance just right, with a winning parade of witty asides, outrageous sight gags and beautifully judged character moments. TH"

Agreed. I know it's hard to fill a list of fifty animated films but come on! Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs? Really? laugh Three animated films from this year that are much more deserving of the list are UP, 9 and Monsters VS Aliens.

I just watched this movie two days ago after putting it off for, what, a month?

Dull, boring mess that falls completely apart at the end. It rains food.
Yeah, now what? sleep Most of the kids in the house seemed to like it,
which, of course, is what really matters.

I went just to see the animation on screen, anyway. That was fine.

Ed/ HEAVY METAL? Music works.

I can see all three of those being on the list, and that's what makes me think this list will be pretty bad. I don't usually have any problem with nay list, lists by their very nature will always have titles you agree with and titles you don't agree with. With Cloudy making it I have a fear this list is going to skew very American and very recent, and that's not an accurate representation of animation in cinema at all.

Isn't 9 directed by a man from New Zealand though? tongue And 2009 has been a horrible year for foreign animation, I just listed three films from this year that sprung to mind that were worthy of such a list IMO. There are plenty of films I want to see on the list, Belleville Rendez-vous is a hilarious French animation with a sharp satirical edge. It's a cartoon for those who dislike slapstick. And Grave of the Fireflies is one of the few animations that make me cry to this very day.

But it does seem like it's going to be a very narrow minded list full of animation that is American/commonly confused for being American. Much like that atrocity IGN did for animated TV shows.

Meatballs is #49, and you're making pronouncements about the "recent American" provenance of the list based on a single entry? Following #50, which is a Canadian film from almost 30 years ago? thinking Interesting line of reasoning, there.

I think his point is that we are only at number 49 and already we have a month old American film acting as filler. And I'm sure that many people have confused Heavy Metal for an American film in the past. tongue

Did LES TRIPLETTES DE BELLEVILLE win any Academy Awards? I think it was nominated,
but it was a few years ago, and I don't remember off the top of my head.

Checking the wikipedia page for LES TRIPLETTES DE BELLEVILLE the UK title is different to the original one. Oopsy. blush

It was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song but lost out on both awards. It did win the Cesar ward for best film music, the Genie award for Best Motion Picture and the BBC Four World Cinema Award though. Not exactly a high profile trophy cabinet but at least it won something.

Thanks for the research. happy What do you know... an animated film that won an award and actually
deserved to win. That's a twist.
