RE: ~~Mount Olympus Mythology Palace~~
One of my favorite Greek myths is about the birth of Athena. Zeus had a MASSIVE headache after doing a little sumpthin' sumpthin' with a nymph. Hephaestus clocked him one in the head with his smith's hammer, cracking open Zeus' skull. Out popped Athena, fully grown, armed & armored.
It just seems SOOO cartoon-ish to me:
ZEUS: Ooooohhh...my head! That
was so great at the time, but I didn't know you could get a hangover from getting laid! Oooohhh...my head!
HEPHAESTUS: Duuuuh...I will fix your headache for you, dear old Dad!
WHAAAMMMMM!!!!!
ATHENA: Ta-da!!
ZEUS: Oh **** Hera's gonna kill me!

Athena has always been my favorite greek god. If my wife was like Hera, I would be hanging around on earth with the nice ladies too.

I love the Greco-Roman mythology, too, but my real love is Celtic myths...they're hard to find as much info on, as they were mostly only recorded by either Roman conquerors or Catholic converters, but what there is is fascinating.
I picked up a copy of "Irish Myths and Legends" on sale at B&N the other day...it has the whole Cattle Raid of Cooley, plus lots of Fionn, and some older stuff. Can't wait till I have time to read it.

RE: ~~Mount Olympus Mythology Palace~~
I know this has little do with mythology, but certainly with Greek culture... The composer Vangelis did a recording a few years back as a tribute to the work of Domenikos Theotocopoulos, called by the Spanish "El Greco" (The Greek). That recording, titled "Foros Timis Ston Greko" (A Tribute to El Greco) was originally released as a limited edition for the express purpose of raising funds for the repatriation of El Greco's works to the Athens Museum.
All 3000 copies were sold, but the work was released two years later in the US commercially... titled "El Greco" it's available on Atlantic Records.
I think listening to that music transports me back in time, both to the world of El Greco during the middle ages, and into the ancient world of Greek philosophy, mysticism and mythos. Listen to it, sometime! The richness of soundscapes is one unparalleled by most composers either electronic or orchestral...where here Vangelis incorporates both.
Another tribute to Greek culture, more recently released by him, is Mythodea. Originally performed in 1994 it was performed live at the Temple of Zeus in Athens last year. The performance, and the subsequent studio recording, are available on CD and DVD from Sony Classical. Both were released to commemorate NASA's 2001 Mars Odyssey Mission. It opens with a brief tribute to "Mars: Bringer of War", from Holst's Planet's suite... and one can imagine Greek phalanxes marching over the Mars horizon in a surreal sort of dream. Instantly one recognizes the reference, but then Vangels moves on and takes us elsewhere, through space... through time. The context of this tribute to Hellenic culture is interestingly transformed in one's mind by the association with space exploration... and there are some great narratives from Vangelis and members of the scientific community in the liner notes regarding the relation of space exploration and Greek mythology.

I'd have to say that my favourite Goddess is Athena, she just rules... but I liked Dionyisis, I mean, God of Wine and Merriment has got to through some good parties LOL
And yah, if you look at is from a basic plotline perspective, most good stories are based on Greek Myths. Even Moulin Rouge was based on the Orphean myth. The Greeks new how to tell stories, we, on the other hand, are losing our touch.

My favorite story would be the Labors of Hercules story. I also love the stories about the Trojan War.

I think one of my fave myths is the story of Arachne... she soo had it coming (and, although I hate spiders, I love this myth).
There's also Cupid and Psyche, which is so romantic and shows devotion. Besides, I like many of the stories about Cupid (though for the moment I forget who his father was. I mean Aphrodite got knocked up quite a few times when you think about....:) )
Though I love the story of Atlanta, she's such a Wonderwomen for the Ancient Greeks....
I'm gonna bore people if I go on

Please feel free to tell as many stories as you want. I don't really care how long the stories are. That's why I started this thread.
I really enjoy watching the movie "Clash of the Titans". That movie could use some updated FX, however.

Has anyone seen Clash of the Titans? It's basically the legend of Perseus with a few peices cut and others pasted in. Thats the beauty of taking myths to the theater, it's ok to mix things up a bit.

I've always had an interest in mythology...for a time I was really into Roman mythology, but that's only because I was into astrology - and y'know...the planets' names...
I also had a big book of Norse mythology once. Very interesting.

RE: ~~Mount Olympus Mythology Palace~~
You're welcome
Atlanta
! Great choice in screen name by the way. Whenever I mention her people think I'm talking about the city in Georgia and get all confused, I'm glad to know her story is still known by someone!
I think one of the most tragic of all the Greek myths is Echo and Narcissus ::tear::
all she did was try and save Zeus from a night in the dog house and old Hera had to curse her... then, when she finally falls in love, the guy is entirly vain and she can only echo everyone else's words....
That and of course Orpheus and Eurydice, that's the one which tones of romantic tragedies are based on... and for good reason.
... ah, I'm not going to go into all this right now, Darth Real Life strikes again.
