*opens door* "Oh, I'm… oh…" "What is it, Lieutenant Sebastian?" "It's just the Rebels, sir. They're here." "My God, man! Do they want tea?" "No, I think they're after something more than that, sir. I don't know what it is, but they brought a flag."

Finished Don Quixote. It had me laughing out loud. One of the best novels I've ever read. The introduction by Carlos Fuentes was thought-provoking.
Started The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. This is supposed to be Dostoevsky's best.

Which version? I know there is a newer translation that puts back a lot of things that were edited out of the classic English translation. I hear the full version is better, and I've considered buying it for a while now.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and if they do, is the fuller version that much better?
I've just finished Saturnalia by Lindsey Davis. It's been a while since I read a Falco novel, and I enjoyed it very much.

I read the abridged version of The Count of Monte Cristo without knowing it was the abridged version. The cover even said: complete and unabridged. However, I came across the real version which was 1000+ pages and much longer than the 500+ page version I read. I felt cheated. The abridged version didn't blow me away so I probably will never get around to reading the unabridged novel.

My copy is a complete and unabridged translation. Its over 1200 pages long and has 117 chapters. It was translated by Robin Buss and its not bad so far.

Don't know how the condensed version is, but the full version is one of my favorite books.

Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?" Because life... is not a movie. Everyone lies. Good guys lose. And love... does not conquer all.

Agreed. I'm only about 160 pages into the book and it's quite good so far. once you get used to the older writing style, its actually quite readable.

I finally finished From Here To Eternity. It was very good, though I'm not sure I'd rate it as one of the great American novels. Some chapters were transcendent; a few were fairly ordinary narrative.
