Valyn posted: I just ordered Speaker For the Dead from Amazon. I keep hearing that the sequels all feel like they take place in a different universe though and that Card only used the same characters (ie. Bean) as a marketing tool to sell more novels.
I suppose that's a possibility. Each sequel does have it's own unique feel to it, like he's trying to do something a little new and different with each book rather than just tell the same story. It's something I actually like about the series, for the most part.
The rest of the Speaker series is really a must read. Xenocide and CotM are not as good, but they still have some really interesting concpets and characters that make them worth reading.
Valyn posted: But the book also has such surprisingly sad parts. Like when Valentine wrote that article about how "Third" is a noble title. I think I shed a tear.
Yeah, I was surprised at how much I was moved while reading the series was, especially Speaker for the Dead.

Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?" Because life... is not a movie. Everyone lies. Good guys lose. And love... does not conquer all.

Valyn that's actually false. Card actually only wrote Ender's Game so he could get to Speaker For The Dead. It's the book he wanted to write and he thought of Ender's Game as the prelude.... until it became one of the seminal works of sci-fi in the latter 20th Century.

Sort of. The Ender's Game novella came out long before his idea of Speaker for the Dead, but he thought it would be a good prelude, and it eventually turned into its own novelization.

Wolfgang Petersen was set to direct the movie; he has been fired.

Proof?
EDIT: I see some internet rumors. Looks like he opted out, not that he was fired. Either way, I'd like to see a better director. His work has been mediocre for years.

I'm curious to see if the movie will ever get made, but if it isn't going to be spectacular I'd rather just not have one at all. I'm not crying over Peterson leaving, that's for sure.
I've read all the Ender series, and apart from the first, and Ender's Shadow is probably my 2nd favorite. Bean's backstory is really interesting, and you can pretty much read it out of order.

Comment by Rich G:
Orson Scott Card had his own panel at NYCC on Saturday, and he talked about the Ender's Game movie. He said that he and Petersen split because Petersen wanted to make a movie that was called Ender's Game but had no relation to the book that Card had written. He also said that he is currently talking with a director who "gets it" and has ambitions of making a movie that could contend for Best Picture, not just be another summer sci-fi blockbuster. On a side note, he called this director "she," so feel free to speculate who that might be. (Oscar ambitions, good with kids... Jodie Foster, perhaps?) Furthermore, he said he had finished the fifth draft of the screenplay and offhandedly referred to it as the "Battle School" story, so expect a good dose of Bean and the other kids, not just Ender. As for casting, he said that if the story is about a worldwide search for Battle School candidates and you don't have 80% of them from southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and Africa, then you're not doing the story right, despite Hollywood's white-centric preferences. And as for Ender himself, he said he was so optimistic about the movie's development, the kid who will play Ender (not cast yet, of course) is probably in first grade now and will be in fourth grade by the time they get filming.

In the introductions to the novels I have, he explains that the Speaker for the Dead was never about Ender until he decided to connect the Speaker for the Dead novel with his Ender's Game novella and make Ender be the Speaker. Having decided that, he had to first develop Ender's Game into an actual full-length novel.
So while Speaker was the original novel on his mind, Ender was not originally cast as the Speaker. He had to fix it so that Ender could fit into the story he had in mind.
Anyway, after reading Speaker, I don't think I could continue with the following novel (Xenocide is it?). Speaker was so dry for the most part that I could barely read a page at a time before wanting to sleep--whereas Game had me hooked and thirsty for more.
Card's introduction in my copy of Speaker also has him saying that Xenocide is even slower-paced than Speaker, so I really think I'll have to sit that one out.
So instead I ended up getting Matt Stover's Heroes Die.

Hurray for uppage (thanks Zaz)
I love the Ender's Game series so far. I finished Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets after I got them two days ago (I read fast). I've loved them so much so far. Shadow Puppets got me so hooked with the love story between Petra and Bean. I've got to say that some of Card's sentences like "I realized I was going to have his children no matter what," made me just laugh uncontrollable.
As for speaker of the dead I remember that in the intro to the book Card states that he meant for Speaker of the Dead to be a stand alone novel seperated from the Ender's Game Series. He said that it didn't matter if you hadn't read the Ender's Game series because you didn't need to.
