Leaving the bench during an altercation needs to be treated the same in all cases, period. Or else rewrite the rules.
As for Garnett... I didn't think the "elbow" was much at all, and certainly didn't appear to be "vicious" as Skip Bayless *gag* would claim... but he still pushed a ref away. I don't see how he didn't get a one game suspension for that. I don't have anything against the Celtics, but I don't get that.

Agreed. I could buy that an "altercation" taking place is a prerequisite towards "leaving the bench=suspension" as a defense for Tim Duncan, but come on, given this explanation, it couldn't have been all that hard the league to rationalize a defense for Amare Stoudemire last year.

At least the Lakers are nowhere near this mess. I'm willing to bet that Celtics fans care more about a possible Lakers/Celtics Finals than Laker fans do.

That's probably because the Lakers and their fans don't want to face the Celtics.

Just thinking about this because of the news about Durant being named Rookie of the Year... if a player misses their entire first season (like Greg Oden this year, for example), are they still considered a rookie the next year since they've never actually played in the league before? I know how MLB handles that, but never thought about it with the NBA before.

The NBA does the same thing. Oden will be eligible for ROY next year.

Yes, Greg Oden will be eligible for Rookie of the Year for 2008-2009.

I'm more concerned over a possible Spurs/Lakers Western Conference Finals, Juli, than a possible Lakers/Celtics Finals.

Did you see the whole game or just that incident? The reason I ask is because the ref's had lost complete control of that game by that point. They were letting the Hawks do whatever they wanted with no whistles being blown. Also, the ref put his hands on Garnett first and I'm not even sure KG saw that it was a ref who grabbed him from behind.
I also think the lack of any punishment handed out to both teams stems from the fact that Stern was sitting down on the floor for the game, so he saw everything (including the ineptitude of the refs) upclose. My guess is if he was back in his office in NYC instead, counting the money Oklahoma City is shelling out for the Sonics, he probably would have signed off on some sort of discipline.

Granted, just the incident. And you have good points - though in a situation such as that, the ref does have every right to put his hands on Garnett (or any other player) first to prevent the situation from worsening.

I have a hard time believing Garnett didn't know it was a ref who was holding him back. The ref walked up to him from the front and kept his hands on him while KG tried to get past him.
Sure Stern was there to witness what was going on throughout the game with the refs not calling anything. But, honestly, how is that any different than ANY other NBA game when refs dictate the flow of the game and not call fouls on certain players so they stay on the floor? Stern didn't suspend Kevin Garnett simply because he's Kevin Garnett and it's the playoffs. If it was Mr. no-name point guard who came off the bench, Stern definitely would have brought the hammer down.
