..eh, i could see a Regehr or a Pronger making the cut, for a bit more experience, although i seem to recall a couple of international tournaments in recent memory where Pronger was exposed a bit on the wider ice surface.

Regehr is a real shutdown guy, but i guess i was going for sexier picks with my defense :P (To be honest, i would love to have Drew Doughty on the squad, but i have a bit of a man-crush on him..)

Kings acquire Ryan Smyth from Avalanche
Saturday, 07.04.2009 / 7:47 AM / 2009 NHL Offseason News

NHL.com

"The Los Angeles Kings, in need of a veteran scoring forward, landed one late Friday night when they acquired Ryan Smyth from the Colorado Avalanche.

In return, the Avs received defensemen Tom Preissing and Kyle Quincey, plus a fifth-round draft pick.

Smyth, 33, has played in 920 career regular season NHL games with the Avalanche, New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers, and has 310 goals and 350 assists for 660 points, along with and 733 penalty minutes. In 81 career playoff games, he has 25 goals and 27 assists for 52 points, along with 82 penalty minutes.

"Ryan is the type of player who fits with our team," Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi said. "He fills an important need as he is a competitive, gritty scoring left winger, and he fits with the overall identity we continue to build here."

This past season, Smyth’s 14th in the NHL, he tied for the Avs' lead in points (59), was first in assists (33) and was second in go als (26) in 77 games. He also tied for the club lead in power-play goals (10), short-handed goals (one), tied for first in game-winning goals (three) and he was first in shots (257).

The 2008-09 season was also the ninth time Smyth has scored at least 20 goals, and his 26 goals were his highest totals in that category since totaling 36 goals in both 2005-06 and 2006-07.

Originally selected by Edmonton with the No. 6 pick in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Smyth made his NHL debut during the 1994-95 season. In 1996-97, he scored 39 goals -- still a career high -- in his first full NHL season as he began to establish himself as one of the game’s top power forwards.

Smyth also that season tallied 20 power play goals, which not only tied for the NHL lead that season but equaled Wayne Gretzky’s team record. Smyth also played in his first 12 NHL playoff games in 1997 after playing in all 82 regular-season games, something Smyth has accomplished three times during his career.

Quincey, 23, led all Kings defensemen in scoring last season with 38 points (4 goals and 34 assists) in 72 games. Quincey, who was claimed off waivers from Detroit at the beginning of the year on Oct. 13, led all Kings players with 27 power-play points.

Preissing, 30, appeared in 22 games for the Kings in 2008-09, scoring 3 goals and adding 4 assists for 7 points. The Arlington Heights, Ill., native also skated in 14 contests for Manchester of the American Hockey League, scoring 2 goals and 4 assists for 6 points. He missed 13 games with the Kings from Feb. 3-27 due to an upper-body injury.

Preissing played four seasons at Colorado College, where he was an All-American and Hobey Baker Award finalist as a senior in 2002-03. Originally signed by San Jose as a non-drafted free agent, Preissing has 31 goals and 100 assists in 322 NHL games with the Sharks, Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles."

Good deal for Colorado, not sure for LA though.

Maybe L.A. plans on promoting Jack Johnson... Although there are tons of rumors around HockeysFuture.com that he will be traded.

Otherwise bad deal for L.A. in my mind.

Really? This is a clear win for LA in my mind.. You give up 2 castoff defensemen for a heart and soul guy who isn't afraid to go into the corners and muck it up.

I think this deal is a good one for LA.

Castoff? Kyle Quincey had a great season and has shown he can be effective on the powerplay.

The amount of work Brian Burke and company did to get this guy is unbelievable. I'm glad we got him.

Sakic was always a bit underrated, imo. Classy classy individual and one of the greatest captains ever. I think of him and Steve Yzerman as being very similar...For years Yzerman didn't get any recognition, and then for whatever reason he finally broke through.

Sakic never seemed to quite get broader recognition.
