I have no trouble with cupcakes if your conference is already very tough.
I agree (though the ACC doesn't count as a tough conference, and this is coming from a current ACC student).
I have to disagree with Onoto, though, because adding top-notch out of conference teams to an already tough schedule means you have to take tough shots week in and week out, and very few teams in all of history have been good enough to withstand that kind of beating. Also, it makes injuries, which are already common, hurt even more, which again notably increases the chances of a loss. I'm not saying a team in a very tough conference should schedule 4 cupcakes out of conference, but 2 cupcakes and 2 middle of the road is fine and certainly shouldn't hurt your chances at a title. Besides, even with that out of conference schedule, a team in a very tough conference probably will still have one of the toughest overall schedules.

It would be nieve for South Carolina to schedule NC State, Clemson and say a team like Oregon and Michigan State, plus a tough SEC schedule. they could easily go 5-7 (well they could do that anyway).

Normally I wish South Carolina would get more talk on ESPN... but right now, I wish they'd shut up. Until Tommy Beecher shows me he can play QB, I have zero confidence in the offense. Yeah, the defense is great - that pitiful rush defense ranking from last year is largely because MLB Jasper Brinkley and DT Nathan Pepper were out nearly the entire season. And in Brinkley's case, that was huge.
So result is, I'm more nervous about the season than anything else, and they sure as heck aren't improving that any.

They ought to win tonight, NC State just isn't very good anymore. I remember a time when NC State had more talent than Clemson.

RE: The College Football Thread
The last time USC played NC State was during the 0-11 season, I think. Or maybe the 1-10 season the year before. Either way, it was an ugly game - NC State won by a score of 10-0, I believe. But yeah, NC State's not too good now. And USC is better than we were back then... but thats not saying much. I just think theres too much talk about a team with an offense as unproven as USC's. I've said it before and I'll probably say it again: McKinley's a great WR, Mike Davis is a decent RB, the TE combo of Jared Cook/Weslye Saunders should be fine... but the O-Line, while experienced, still hasn't shown much, and Beecher is as unproven as they come at QB. So maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. I hope so. But I'm not counting on it.
Also, anyone who's watching ESPN right now... please tell me that "ask Dr. Lou" thing was a joke. Or that its April Fools Day and I didn't realize it.

Beecher's grade on the opening drive of the season: F-. And can I give a lower grade than that, please? If so, lower.

RE: The College Football Thread
You really, like it or not, need cupcakes on your schedule in college football.
You need to be able to take in-game time and work out the kinks in your offense. You need to be able to build up the confidence of the young men on your team. And, perhaps most importantly, you need to be able to give your reserves and underclassmen in game experience.
This was the problem at Notre Dame last year. At least part of it. Two years ago, Weiss played the first team way too much. And when key cogs left for graduation and the NFL, the reserves had to learn completely on the fly. IF you can get them game experience against the Youngstown States and Temples of the world, they have a much easier time in the tough games the next season.

Inty's right.
Also, good job, USC defense (expected), but the offense has been ugly (again, expected, unfortunately).
EDIT: let me rephrase that: offense has been ugly, except For Kenny McKinley. Can't fault him.
EDIT2: On second thought, let the "we want Smelley" (backup QB) chants begin.
EDIT3: Halftime. 3-0, though at least USC is on top. Still, ugh. Beecher's thrown 3 picks, and has a total of 66 yards passing - and every single one of those yards is completely on the receivers. Either the receiver has caught the ball behind the line of scrimmage and run with it (McKinley, especially) or the receiver has been so incredibly wide open that
I
could have made the pass. At least the defense has been great.
Also, I hope the NC State QB is ok (concussion, taken to hospital
)

No joke. See my edit a moment ago, right above you.
EDIT: Finally! Touchdown, Mike Davis. Courtesy of the Carlos Thomas interception giving us the ball on the 10 yard line. And still had to go for it on 4th down.

RE: The College Football Thread
Well, the second half was much, much better than the first. Still, theres one big question that needs answering - who should be the QB.
Grades:
QB:
Tommy Beecher: F. Granted, he completed 12 out of 22 passes... but nearly all of his yards came courtesy of the receivers, running after the catch or being incredibly wide open. Some decent running... I think mostly because NC State was so stunned by him actually trying to run they were still in shock. But the real reason here is the 0 TD and FOUR interceptions, which was incredibly ugly.
Chris Smelley: B+. Granted, his numbers came against a defense that was worn down already, and any players out there that weren't tired were second-stringers... but still, the numbers speak for themselves: 5-for-5 passing (including a couple downfield) and 2 TDs, no picks. Much, much more impressive than Beecher (actual text message convo with my mom, who was at the game: she asked me where the offense was, I said "not with Beecher", then Smelley tossed his first TD pass, then she sent back "Smells better here now!")
RB:
Mike Davis: A-. His numbers could have been a lot better with some help from the offensive line, but he did end up with 130-something yards and some good runs despite that.
Taylor Rank: B-. He might have been hurt more by the poor O-line play than Davis, but he didn't really overcome it too much, though he did notch his first collegiate TD.
WR:
Kenny McKinley: B+. Had some good runs-after-catch on screen plays, and probably would have been a lot more effective if we'd had a QB that could throw most of the night... but he wasn't as visible as expected, either.
Rest of WRs: B-. Some decent plays, especially getting open when Smelley was in, but nothing too impressive, either.
TEs: B. Fairly average stuff from both Cook and Saunders.
O-Line: D+. This was on the border between F and D- for most of the game, but they looked better late, if against a tired defense. Still, far too many penalties and nowhere near enough protection.
Defense: A+. Shutout. 2 picks. 2 fumbles recovered. Lots of good hits. This is the heart of the team, and for good reason.
Give the game ball to: The entire defensive unit. Is this really in doubt? Davis made a case, but the defense was awesome.

I'll definitely be pulling for them, and not just because I may end up there next year. An upset would be wonderful.
Also, something you won't hear me say much, but Roll Tide!
