...eh, i think it's all mental/psychology.
Word of a curse gets out, that inserts just that SLIM element of doubt in your psyche, and then in the matter of seconds during the course of a game where it's either DO or DIE, suddenly that element of doubt resurfaces and you screw up.
I played sports for a good 20 years of my life, and i gotta say that little pregame rituals really surve to just comfort you. When playing a sport, your body basically becomes a machine. Pregame rituals force you into habits that become second nature, you know? That gets you into a comfort zone before and during the game.

In terms of fans and weird superstitions, here's one: My mom wouldn't watch Johnny Damon at bat during the 2004 ALCS because she thought looking at him would make him flub. She actually hid behind the couch so she wouldn't see it.

Sadly, that was the best picture of Sarano that I could find. I wanted to post a pic of Wesley Snipes telling Tom Berenger that Sorano was "Looking to sacrifice a live chicken".

Rogue...Jedi posted: I think the curses do exist in people's heads. That is, they become convinced that something wont happen no matter what they do, and so it doesn't. Or that they will get it a hit if they do certain things, but not if they don't, and if affects confidence and so forth.
So in that sense, they do exist and are valid.

I had never heard of the Cubs thing until this week, when my friend mentioned it.
