Hush, you. tongue

I have my arms wide open in case Lawson and Ellington need to come back to the fold. Which they do. They need to come back.

NOW. plain

Danny Green also entering the draft, but not with an agent and (unlike Lawson and Ellington) appears likely to return.

And UNC has another dynamite recruiting class coming in from what I've heard, so they can afford to lose Lawson and Ellington.

UNC's got a couple big men and a point guard coming in, though I don't know much about them.

Me: ...and you have to figure it'll be a former Duke guard. (in reference to Duke replacing Johnny Dawkins)

Not surprisingly, this did indeed hold true, as Nate James will be the third assistant behind longtime (well, as assistant coaches go) coaches Wojo and Collins.

Duke also picked up a late commit from 6-10 Miles Plumlee, who was planning to go to Stanford before the coaching changes. Certainly can't hurt, as everyone knows what they need is a big man. Is he the right big man? That we'll have to wait on, but I can hope. He won't be the focus, obviously, but hopefully enough to give the guards more room to play.

Whoa, Rogue, sorry I didn't catch this the other day. I slipped while on "vacation" and haven't been paying attention in here like I should. blush Shame, shame, shame...

This 6-10 stick named Miles Plumlee seems interesting, but when competing against stronger guys for rebounds, it'll remain to be seen whether that lanky body can take hits or at least grow some muscle to wail back when in the post. tongue

And it seems like Carolina has indeed landed an awesome recruiting class. Two power forwards, a shooting guard, and a point guard. Three are McDonald's All-Americans, and all of them seem like they're going to be ripe for ol' Roy's tempo. mischief

And just for you, Rogue, since you're my mortal enemy in this thread, Duke's got three newbies. Two power forwards and a shooting guard. Most of the media praise goes to Elliot Williams, the incoming shooting guard... ESPN says he's got good sense and a sweet shot.

*sigh* Is it November yet?

Interestingly, I went back and quoted part of that old post of mine to follow up on it, and neglected to do the same with another portion of it:

...in related news, South Carolina and Darrin Horn still searching for a third assistant coach, with names including Mike Boynton having been mentioned. I wouldn't mind that, I could see him being a good coach, but he looks to be an outside shot right now at best.

Outside shot or no, Boynton was hired last week as the third assistant coach. I like Horn's decision here, but I'm still holding judgment on the hiring of Horn.

So the Arizona recruit decides to skip college and go to Europe to get paid since he can't go straight to the NBA... and Lute Olsen responds by saying he won't recruit anymore "one and dones" and wants the rules changed so that kids can either go straight to the NBA or, if they go to college, be required to stay at least 2 years.

This is pretty much what I think the rule should be changed to, though I think those that go to college should stay at least three years. See: baseball (this would be nearly identical to the baseball policy) or even to a lesser extent football (though in football, you have to go to college AND stay three years).

EDIT: that said, I don't expect the rule to change for a while, and even then probably won't be to something like this.

I can only shake my head at this mess. If a kid thinks he's good enough to play in the NBA straight out of high school, let the kid do it. Why not? If he's going to fall on his face, a year under a college coach isn't going to help. Personally, I don't see why players can't understand that college basketball perfects skill sets and matures the person. The lure of the NBA in my mind wouldn't be so strong, but I suppose staring down a big contract is awfully tough to deny for most people. For the coaches, it's definitely a losing situation. Pouring everything into a kid and attempting to form a team over four years is becoming ridiculously difficult when jumps to the NBA are so common.
