RE: The Boxing Thread - ***Countdown to Calzaghe - Jones Jr, (November 11th)***
At the peak of their careers they were two of the most skilled boxers out there. Calzaghe wasn't the stereotypical Brittish fighter. He was/is a lot like Jones used to be. Light on his feet, great hand speed, great head movement, good enough power....
That is why I say we were cheated!!!
Back then...I think I would favor Jones....Now, I think I am leaning towards Calzaghe.
Have you seen the HBO 24/7 documentary Spike?

I think I'd have favoured Jones back then too. It takes a special fighter to go from middleweight to heavyweight and win a world title. I remember back in the day wishing that Jones would fight Lennox Lewis in a unification bout. That would have been amusing to see
I also back Calzaghe to win on a UD and then retire.
Ironically, as soon as he retires, the super-middleweight division starts getting interesting again. Kessler, Bute, Andrade, Froch, Pascal, Inkin, Mundine, maybe Pavlik and Abraham too. If only Joe was younger
Haven't seen 24/7 yet. I barely have time to watch anything these days. I'll simply buy the DVD and watch it like I have for Hatton-Mayweather and Calzaghe-Hopkins recently.

One thing I have thought about....is how Calzaghe would have been viewed by the American public, if he had fought here more.
I am a fan of his, and since I have viewed the documentaries on HBO, I wish I had watched him more. He seems like a really down to earth guy, just like Hatton. I think that the average fight fan, who only watches the marquee names, probably does not know about him. That is a shame. I think he could have been the crossover star that Hatton is, maybe bigger.

Calzaghe, unfortunately, gets dismissed because he's fought at home a lot and doesn't appear in the American mainstream. Without exposure, fans dismiss him as some "padded European fighter" (as if where someone comes from has
any
bearing on how well they fight) and insist he slaps etc because he reduces punching power to keep his hands unbroken.
Yet Paulie Malignaggi, a fighter who has little punching power and is also very similar to Calzaghe in other ways (handspeed, angles, hell, even the Italian heritage) is loved by many of these same fans. Funny that

Well, tonight is the night! Nov 8th (why the hell I originally wrote Nov 11th in the countdown I will never know
) is Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones Jr for the Ring Magazine light heavyweight champion of the world title at Madison Square Garden.
Could be an entertaining fight considering both fighters' styles. Certainly has to more entertaining than Hopkins-Calzaghe and Jones Jr-Trinidad.
My prediction is Joe wins on a UD and then retires. Jones Jr then has a rematch with Hopkins, which he wins, then both of them retire. Tarver will decide to follow suit, as will Glen Johnson and Clinton Woods, and leave light-heavy to the young men.

I'd agree with the above. Calzaghe on points and then to retire with a perfect record. If he wins it'll be 50 fights I think? Has anyone else ever done it, a perfect all wins record. The only one I can think of is Rocky Marciano, but I'm sure he had a couple of draws.

46-0, as compared to Marciano's 49-0. Not quite there but pretty good.

Calzaghe should ride off into the sunset now. If he keeps going, what happend to Jones, will happen to him.
I don't want to see him still have that competetive fire, when his reflexes aren't at their peak anymore. A young hungry fighter might catch him with something and hurt him, just like Jones.
All credit to Joe for winning against a still dangerous Jones. I wonder if the spotlight, money, and competition will lure him back into the ring.

I'd say retire too. There are plenty of young guns that are wanting to take over, and the old guys are just going to get in the way.
Except we keep hearing rumours of the golden oldies wanting to stay. Already there are Jones-Hopkins II, Kessler-Hopkins, Calzaghe-Dawson being mooted. The old guys should just retire (I include Johnson and Tarver et al in there too) and if Dawson and Kessler want to fight each other, that'd be good. Seeing two young fighters against each other to see who rules the 161-175 divisions.
Also, Arthur Abraham really needs to fight Pavlik. After last night there's nowhere else for him to go.

I am also hearing that Hopkins and Golden Boy want to pony up some cash for a Hopkins/Calzaghe rematch.
That would be hard for Joe to turn down. He already beat Hopkins, and he might earn another big payday.
Dawson might be a good fight....but like I said...what if Joe shows some age in a fight like that? What if he does not show the same amount of movement?
We see fighters get old in the ring all the time. Like the first fight with Jones and Tarver. Jones gutted out a win, but got old in the ring.
I think Joe is charismatic enought to be a good commentator, or promoter. He should take his unblemished record and retire. Why hang on untill someone does KO you?

Agreed there. Fighters get old, and once they lose, they start losing their magic. Look at Holyfield and Jones Jr. Stay on for years, get beaten and become shadows of themselves. If they'd retired at the top, like say, Lewis or Mayweather, then they retain some of that magic.
I'd be interested to see Calzaghe as a promoter. Especially if he appoints his dad as public relations
He even offered to promote Kessler if he stepped up to fight Hopkins. I'd like to see how that goes.

I would love to see Enzo slap his own fighter for not making weight
At the very least a good old fashioned tongue lashing! I would love to hear Joe comentate, much like Roy Jones did. He could easily break down fights, and offer insite on how to beat certain styles. If he did though...it would probably be in the UK and not on HBO or Showtime in the US I think. But who knows...Lennox works for HBO.

Yeah I was wrong. I thought Marciano had two draws, but a quick Google set me straight.
IMHO Calzaghe should retire. Before the fight he stated that it would be his last, and allowing for his 'no rematches' rule there is (almost) noone left to fight.
But the lure of one last fight may prove too much. He has proved stateside what we in the UK have always known, that he is a top quality fighter and, pound-for-pound, probably the best ever UK fighter. So the obvious next step would be a final* 'thanks for all your support' fight at the Millenium Stadium. Which would lead us to the question of an opponent.
I doubt any American would be interested - given the time the fight would be on TV in America - it would have to be a UK opponent. So who would be a good match**?. There is no way Calzaghe would fight Enzo Macaranelli which leaves just one option, persuading David Haye to drop back down to Light Heavy.
This would be a dangerous fight for both of them. Haye is on his quest to become Heavyweight Champion, and a loss against Calzaghe would set him back a long way. On the other hand, Calzaghe's last two fights have seen him on the canvas, and have shown that all the past problems with his hands means he no longer has the knockout power (lets be honest, the Calzaghe of 5-7 years ago would have knocked Jones Jr out) which would give Haye a very good chance. Both fighters have too much to lose, I just can't see it happening.
* which if he wins would be 47-0, and at that point surely the chance to equal or surpass Marciano would prove too much.
** Of course, even if it was against me (My fighting weight is about the same as Calzaghe's) for him to got out on an easy spectacular knockout, the fight would still be a sellout. Actually Joe if you are reading this PM me, I volunteer....

I was watching the replay of Jones/Calzaghe last night...
I was laughing, because I think Joe...at 36 years old...is still afraid of his dad giving him a good knock upside the head!!
Enzo yelled..."are you paying attention?" or somthing like that...and Joe snapped to arrention and said YES!
It was kind of funny...I think Enzo could have taken Jones that night
In other news...Taylor beat up on Lacy, like Joe C did.

This would be a dangerous fight for both of them.
And absolutely
impossible
. Haye struggled to make cruiserweight, there's
no
way he could drop from the 215lbs that he was last night to the 175lb light-heavyweight limit.
And there are plenty of UK fighters who would love to have a pop at Joe. Carl Froch among them, and from abroad, Chad Dawson, Mikkel Kessler and Hopkins have all said they'd go to Wales to fight him.
Watched Haye-Barrett last night, but was at my girlfriend's so didn't have the chance to come on and update the thread title. Good to see the post-match interview with Haye and Vitali doing a joint interview. Hopefully that's going to be a super-fight for 2009.
