Well, generally a hockey game lasts about 2 an half hours not including OT/shootout, with it about 3. But, yea in the playoffs its a whole other story. If the Devils get into OT I don't care what I'm doing the next day, I'll stay up till there's a winner.

MLB - I like the pitchers duels so 2 1/2 hrs is a good pace.
Playoff baseball (esp AL) is sometimes unwatchable with 4 plus hour games. I'll tune in for the 8th or 9th inning if it close and not past 1 am.

NFL - If its a good game I don't have a problem with 3 to 3 1/2 hrs.

NBA - 2 hrs or just over 2.
Playoff Basketball (esp game 7's) I'll watch until they end.

NHL - Don't watch much Reg season, but like the others have said, I can watch playoff Hockey all night. A game 7 in Double or Triple OT is unbelievable.

Soccer - is a good length with the running clock, unless the team I want is winning, then it is waaaaay to long.

Edit:

I forgot Golf.
I can watch a good 5-6 hrs of the closing round of a Major if it is close and if Tiger is somehow involved.

Football Games should last ideally 3 hours

4x15min = 1 hour
Halftime = 15 minutes

that gives 1 hour and 45 minutes of stoppages of play for timeouts/tv timeout/reviews/etc.

Ofcourse, Overtime is a different story.

Honestly?

A great game can't last long enough in my book. If two teams are going back and forth and have me captivated, I'll happily watch the game for hours on end. I've watched six hour games before.

And if a game is boring, the length doesn't bother me, because I'll be turning it off or flipping the channel, unless it's something like the Super Bowl of my favorite team, in which case I'm probably not being bored by it anyways.

So, really, a game can't go too long in my book (although I reserve the right to change this stance when/if I have children)

As long as is necessary for the contest to be concluded. The fact I'm watching on TV has no impact. The sport is the sport.
