New York Jets: I live in Columbia, Missouri. People who pay very close attention to sports may have already figured this one out... In 2005, MU quarterback Brad Smith finished his final game as a Missouri Tiger. He was a real driving force behind the Tigers' success at the time and I was a fan of his. It was only natural that when he was drafted to the Jets as a wide receiver, I began to follow the team.
In short: favorite college player went there.

Everton
1987 / 1988 - In my last couple of years at Junior School (equivalent of Elementary School) Everton were the cool team to support. They were just coming down from the height of their powers after a hugely successful few years prior. Lots of people were into them... so I followed suit. Twenty years later they haven't come close to matching those good times, but I've been with them ever since.
Now they mean more to me than prtty much anything except my job and my family.

Hmmm...
Football (you know, the type that actually involves playing with your feet): Arsenal
Back in the late 90's, when I was still about 10 years old, me and my family used to have a type of cable package that somehow included a channel that played EPL games on occasion. And since my dad's a big football fan, he'd gobble up any chance he could at watching the games that came on. I wasn't all that much of a football fan then, mostly because my only exposure to football was limited to the Mexican leagues and Serie A (from watching RAI, which we somehow also got). Therefore, my perception of the game was that it was slow, boring, and nothing terribly special. But then, watching the EPL games, I was frequently exposed to the one team that would destroy that perception forever: The Arsenal Gunners. I mean, after watching the dull, time wasting, skill-wanting stuff on display in Mexico and Italy, seeing Bergkamp, Vieira, Overmars, and Anelka weaving their high-flying creative magic over opposing defenses made me see that there is indeed a reason why people call football "the beautiful game". And then, when Henry came in and starting terrorizing opposing defenses with his supreme skill, I was sold for life. Granted, I've had a bit of a revival these last 2-3 years in which I've become a lot more active in following the Gunners than before (the CL run in '06 was particularly compelling), but I've always supported the one team that literally made me a believer in football for life, and I always will.
As for the other sports, I'm a Bay Area kind of guy, and I support the "East Bay" teams. I support the Raiders and the Athletics in American football and baseball respectively, and I always have some time for the San Jose Sharks in hockey. But since I was raised by the Bay, the only "Out-of-Town" team I support is the Gunners.

I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan living in New York.
Story is set back a generation.
My mom never really cared for football.
Then, in the 70's she worked for a company whose home office was in Dallas.
She worked with these people on a daily basis from NY and their enthusiasm for the Cowboys + she thought Roger Staubach was cute led to her love of the Boys.
It just kind of rubbed off on me in the early 80's.
I also kinda liked the Jets because they wore green and that was my favorite color.
But I loved the Cowboys.
It was Cowboys everything for me as a kid.
Garbage can, blanket, pajamas, etc.

Why? It's not like I'm some sort of bandwagon fan that jumps on the next team that happens to win the Prem. I've always hated Man U and Spurs, and I always will. And Arsenal has always been my team, and it always will, even after (God Almighty forbid) Arsene Wenger decides to call time on his stay at the Grove.

Well, he's not a part of team. But I support Roger Federer, and I've only been to Basel twice in my life. Why do I support him? Because he has talent that has never been seen before.

Well, for me it was because I grew up in St. Louis and St. Charles, Missouri.
So my teams are the Cardinals, Rams, and Blues in that order. I have been to games with the Cardinals in the old Busch Stadium and the Blues in their old arena. I went to a Cardinals game in football when they used to be in St. Louis, but have never seen a Rams game live.
I now live near Jacksonville, Florida, but I still root for my original home teams. I have not really gotten into supporting the Jaguars yet, but I do like the direction they are going. If I had to pick an AFC team, they would be the one I currently like the best.
For Nascar, I have always liked Dale Earnhardt, Sr. when he was alive. I also have liked his son, Dale Jr. especially now that his father has passed away. I believe that Jr. definitely made the right decision to split from his fathers' company that is currently being run by Teresa Earnhardt. I really hope that he has a great year this year and the coming years, and I believe that now that he has the equipment, he should definitely make the Chase this year. I think it would be expecting too much for him to win a championship in his first year with Hendrick, but it could happen and I would not be too surprised if it did happen.
