Did you guys read the title of the thread, and the title of the list??

It says college player...

Reggie Bush did almost everything in that offense. He lined up at reciever, RB, threw passes, returned punts, returned kicks, and was the best decoy a team could have.

He ran for over 1700 yards, splitting time with white!!

You guys might be right, he wasn't the best back, but he was the best, and most versatile player to comer around in a long time.

Im not so sure Bush was even the best running back in his years at USC. You had guys like Laurence Maroney, DeAngelo Williams, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Adrian Peterson running around. I'd take 3 out of those 4 listed above Bush any day of the week. Great talent but im not sure he's worthy of #24.

But those guys other then Peterson seldomly made huge plays. Williams was another example of a great player at a small school like Kevin Smith.

23. Johnny Rodgers

Played college at Nebraska. Opened the scoring in the "Game of the Century" against the Oklahoma Sooners, a 35-31 win in 1971. Also won the Walter Camp award, and is probably the best player to shun the NFL for the CFL.

Hard to comment, never saw him play.

22. George Gipp

Played college at Notre Dame. He entered Notre Dame intending to play baseball for the Fighting Irish, but was recruited by Knute Rockne for the football team, despite having no experience in organized football. During his Notre Dame career, Gipp rushed for 2,341 yards and threw for 1,789. A versatile player, Gipp scored 83 career touchdowns, averaged 38 yards a punt, and gathered 5 interceptions as well as 14 yards per punt return and 22 yards per kick return in four seasons of play for the Irish. Gipp held the school rushing record for more than 50 years.

George Gipp is, of course, probably best known for the phrase coined around his nickname "win one for the Gipper".

Also, he's got a liberty ship named for him, so that's something else not many folks on this list can say.

Don't forget that playing the role of a Gipp helped launch the political career of a president.

laugh Right, how could I have forgotten? I knew the Gipper sounded familiar. Wasn't his tomb dug up recently for private investigation?

21. Archie Griffin

One of the few odd factoids that most sports fans know Archie Griffin is college football's only two-time Heisman trophy winner, taking it home in both 1974 and 1975. And while many others probably should have gotten that honor (Hershel Walker chief among them) none have. There are some other lesser knowns "only to do thats" about Archie Griffin, however, including only player to start four Rose Bowls, only player to lead the Big Ten in rushing three consecutive years, and only player to lead the Ohio State Buckeyes in rushing four consecutive years. He also has the distinction of setting the Buckeyes single-game rushing record as freshman (although he did break it again later).

Twenty-one seems about right for Archie Griffin to me, though as a Buckeyes fan I will even admit that in my opinion he's not the greatest Buckeye of all time (I think that honor goes to Orlando Pace), and also admit that my view of Griffin is a bit skewed as I've only seen him on tape and most of that has been with scarlet-and-gray shaded glasses on.

Still, no way you leave this guy out of the top-25, and 21 is probably the right spot (though I am certain there are some ahead of him I will disagree with).

Agreed with most of what Inty said, excepting the Buckeye fan perspective part tongue Definitely deserves to be on this list (how could you NOT list the only 2 time Heisman winner on a list like that) and probably should be at least a little bit higher (so the only two time winner doesn't make the top 20?)

It does show how many other great players there have been when someone like Griffin is this low.

20. Charley Trippi

Trippi was a two-time All-American at Georgia, with a collegiate football career that was interrupted by World War II. He won the 1946 Maxwell award (one of only two Georgia Bulldogs to do so, the other being Herschel Walker) and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

I've never seen him play live (obviously), but nothing I've seen on film has made me think he's better than Archie Griffin.

So, everyone loves Charley Trippi, huh?

19. Disk Butkus

The greatest college football player of all time from Illinois, Butkus was the 1963 Big Ten MVP, the 1964 Coaches Association Player of the Year, and finished a remarkable (for the time period and his position) third in Heisman voting in 1964. In addition to these honors, Dick Butkus has been immortalized, as the Dick Butkus Award is given out annually to the nation's most outstanding linebacker, a fitting tribute.

My personal opinion of Butkus is very high. I think he could play and play well even in today's game with bigger/faster/stronger/smarter players without too much trouble. 19 is too low for him on this list in my opinion.

18. Jim Brown

We all know Jim Brown. We've all seen the amazing 20-yard runs where he is dragging three defenders the entire way into the end zone. The prototype for power backs, he was simply an amazing running back, starting in Syracuse. He was an All-American and is part of the College Football Hall of Fame.

If this list were to include college and pro careers as the basis for evaluating players, I'd say 18 is too low for Jim Brown. But it's college only, and there were some other players who had better college careers.

I think that sums it up, right there.
