The 2009 ATP season really gets started today with the Australian Open! Can we get a title revision?
Do you want a new title, or a new thread?

Just a switch to 2009. Not fun to do manually. tongue

Sad Stosur went out, but Dementieva is playing hot tennis so far this year.

Stoked about Dokic though, I always liked her and it's good to see that she's managed to overcome some of her rather major personal issues.

Gonzo with the big rally and beats Gasquet 12-10 in the 5th.

He is the type of player who could give Nadal trouble on a hard court surface.

There are some great 4th round matches coming up, there is not one that is not interesting:

predictions for tonight:

Federer over Berdych in 3: I don't expect Federer too have much trouble the way he is playing.

Cilic over Del Potro in 5: Should be a great one. 2 of the most promising young players match up. I think Cilic has a mental edge and a better serve. Cilic is in better form as well.

Djokovic over Bahgdatis in 4: Djoker could have some trouble, Bags is playing very well. But Djoker will win in the end.

Roddick over Robredo in 3: Roddick is 9-0 vs Robredo all time and he is playing great.

today's picks:

Nadal over Gonzalez in 3: Gonzo could give Nadal trouble if he comes out firing with his forehand, but Nadal is playing too well and Gonzo will be worn after his 5 set marathon with Gasquet.

Simon over Monfils in 5: Monfils is on fire but Simon is a better court tactician. The physical edge to Monfils but Simon's no-pace shots will drive Monfils nuts and the court smarts of Simon will prevail.

Murray over Verdasco in 4: Verdasco is absolutely on fire. He has lost a total of 12 games in 3 matches. But his run should end here today, because Andy Murray is playing too well. But if Murray has an off day Verdasco could surprise him. Conversely if Verdasco has an off day than Murray will romp.

Blake over Tsonga in 4: Blake is playing very well. Tsonga has played a few shaky sets so far and may be feeling the pressure of defending the points from last years final run.

Well, you only went 50/50.

Tsonga looked really good, actually. And I guess Murray did have an off day, didn't see the match unfortunately.

I didn't really appreciate the espn commentators' roasting of Del Potro in the final set. Federer was nigh unstoppable today. There's really nothing a player can do against Federer on an "on day," regardless of ranking.

They don't have to try, that's why they were so nasty.

That's a problem with Del Potro, he dosen't have enough variety in his game to try new things when what he is doing isn't working.

Is Verdasco the surprise of the Open? I think if he can defeat Nadal as soundly as Tsonga did last year, then yes.

You know, when PTI had "chances of Roddick beating Federer" during oddsmakers the other day, I was thinking something like 1-in-a-million. But I did pick him to at least win a set... yeah, not a smart pick. Federer should go down as one of the greatest tennis players ever.

I thought Roddick would take a set as well. Roddick was on a role.

Federer has single handedly ruined Roddick's career. Roddick is 07- at major against him and 2-16 overall. If there was no Federer, Roddick would likely have 2 to 4 more grand slams. He certainly would have at least one Wimbledon and probably another US Open or 2.
