Pretty amazing thought -- since2004 (when he lost in the 3rd round) the only player to beat Federer in Paris is Nadal. That's 4 straight years (once in the semis, 3 times in a row in the final).

Huge chance, no question.

A win here would not only give him the career slam but also tie him with Sampras for Slam wins, right?

That's right (on both counts).

It's interesting to note that the last career Slam was completed at the French Open a decade ago, by Andre Agassi.

A Federer win in France would ratchet up the stakes for Wimbledon a lot, and they're already high. It would mean that Federer and Nadal each hold the other's "home" title, to go along with all the majesty and drama of last year's title. I fervently hope we get to see another Federer-Nadal clash on grass in July.

I would love to see Nadal play Federer and the US Open this year. But at Wimbledon I would love to see Murray in the final with the home crowd behind him.

Tommorrow's semifinals: Soderling vs Gonzalez and Federer vs Del Potro

I am looking forward to new player being in the final at the French this year. It was neede after all the humdrum results the past few years in grand slams.

and Söderling is in the final!!!!

I still haven't had the chance to watch a single game, but I'm happy for the result none the less.

Is there a live-stream of Federer Djokovic anywhere? This is so lame.

Federer completes the career grand slam at last. I can't help but wonder how big an asterisk history will assign him for not beating Nadal to get there, but it doesn't matter in the end. Sports history is filled with lucky and unlucky breaks, and you have to take advantage of them when they come your way. Federer did that, and now he's the champion of the French Open.

This raises the drama level for Wimbledon higher than ever before, now that Nadal holds the Wimbledon crown and Federer the French Open title. May they meet again in early July to renew their rivalry for the ages.

There is no asterisk. How many times in their career did Sampras get lucky or Borg. Im sure they didn't always beat the very best every final. This cements Federer as the greatest.

There are whispers that Nadal may not even play in wimbledon because of his knee (I think he will). Players will gain confidence against Nadal as they saw Soderling beat him. But Wimbledon certainly does become very interesting.

My top contendors for Wimbledon:
1. Federer
2. Murray
3. Nadal
4. Tsonga
5. Roddick

Söderling didn't have a chance today, I wonder if the nerves and pressure finally got to him. I hadn't expected such an easy win for Federer. Federer did play nicely though, he was the winner from the start.

Absolutely no asterisk. Federer's run of GS Finals alone is astounding, now with the career slam and tying Sampras's overall record. Sampras himself says so.

And it's not as if Nadal wasn't at the tournament. He lost to Soderling, who Federer beat in straight sets.

EDIT: An uinteresting statistic about the Federer-Nadal rivalry:

Results on each court surface

* Clay courts: Nadal 9–2
* Hard courts: 3–3
* Grass courts: Federer 2–1

Take away clay, where 11 of their 20 matches have been, and Federer has a slight lead. Imagine how many time Agassi might have beaten Sampras if most of their matches had been on clay.

here's hoping for a Federer Nadal Wimbledon final, with Federer reclaiming the trophy, silencing his 'have to beat Nadal' critics, and breaking Sampras' record all in one foul swoop. 'twil be awesome.

If you're going to question Federer as the GOAT, then at least go with Laver as your true #1. Sampras played in an incredibly boring era, with no one consistently around to challenge him.

According to Bud Collins, Sampras's era was better than Federer's. I disagree.
Laver is the only one who could have a say, he won 2 calender year grand slams (but 3 of 4 slams were on grass then). Also slams weren't the #1 most important thing back then, Laver really dominated his era as federer did back in the 05-07 time period.
