Bowl games have a lot riding on them...

1. Teams want to play well, in order to position themselves for the following year. A big bowl win could boost your pre-season ranking.

2. Prestige. Recruiting is a whole lot easier when you have tape of a winning bowl game. It is also good for teams from other conferences play each other, and let kids see other programs and meet new people.

examples-Hawaii plays Georgia. Yes they got beat (Badly) but do you think those Hawaii players will ever forget that experience, playing on a national stage, and returning as heroes no matter what.

Boise St plays Oklahoma. Smaller confernce wins a classic David v Goliath matchup.

Clemson plays Auburn. Anyone think Auburn did not want that game? Anyone think Clemson did not play their hearts out against a tough team, from probably the toughest conference around?

3. To see how you stack up against other teams, to evaluate your team and season.

4. The seniors get one more game to play with their team. They get to go to battle one last time with the people they basically grew up with.

I love watching these things. As for the blowouts, it happens. The NCAA tourney was brought up...How many blowouts are there in the first round??? Does the first round not matter? I think not. It matters for all the reasons I mentioned for bowl season.

I care about all these bowls. Most of them are good fun to watch.

I especially cared about the New Mexico Bowl. I don't know how it rated nationally, and I really don't care. All I care about is that my Lobos finally have a bowl win.

Tunick, if you don't like them, then don't watch the games, no one is making you. Just let those of us who enjoy Bowl season enjoy it.

A) I don't watch them.

B) I made this thread, as opposed to making my points in the actual college football thread. This is the sports fourm afterall, users have the right to make a thread based on their opinion, no matter how unpopular it maybe with the fourm as a whole.

So is the point of this thread that of making other people mad? If so, you're doing pretty well.

It amuses me greatly when people react the way they do to my opinions of college football. Where is it written in stone that a sports fan has to care/believe that college football is such a "great" thing?

It's not written anywhere, but then again, the Arena is usually meant for people to express their love of sports. And if someone doesn't like it, they just avoid it. You're unique in the fact that you share with us your dislike, thereby creating tension and frustration from fellow users.

Technically, there's nothing wrong with what you're doing, but it seems better just to not talk about the subject rather than complaining.

Actually, the description says " Join users from around the world in discussions about every sport both big and small from every corner of the globe."

So, there's no need to love what you discuss. Heck, look at my Boston Sports thread. As long as we discuss the merits, pros and cons of the Bowl System and how it might be reworked to provide something some might see more enjoyable, or why we might keep it the same because it is enjoyable, I think this is a worthwhile thread. And so let's keep things on-topic and not discuss if this thread is appropriate. Mkay?

I'm sorry, but may I ask what the discussion is at this point? It seems to me that what you've stated is not the same as the thread's creator's intent.

However, to discuss what you've brought up, if you're a college football fan, the bowl system (excluding BCS bowls) is entertaining, especially if your team is participating. Even if yours isn't, seeing matchups that normally wouldn't come to existence during the regular season seems fun. Conference rivalries can sometimes be somewhat settled (take the Holiday Bowl, for example), and games that include extremely varying playing styles to me are intriguing.

What's not good? Once in a while teams can play against an opponent that they've already played against in the regular season. Also, some games might be total mismatches (however, this season proves there's no such thing as a mismatch), and some fans might feel cheated that their team didn't get an invitation. There are 32 bowl games currently, and some people are wondering if that's too many. I can see their point, because post-season games are meant for deserving teams. In my opinion, a 6-6 team should not be eligible for a bowl game, considering they'd have a losing season if they proceeded to lose that contest. If record alone isn't enough, a 7-5 team entering the bowl game that has lost, let's say, their last 4 of 5, should not be invited to a bowl game either. Teams that totally fall apart at the end of the season do so for a reason. Why give them a chance to lose again? Their hearts aren't in it anymore, apparently.

That last part was hard for me to say, since Cal finished in that fashion (losing 6 of their last 7). However, redemption is sometimes worthwhile by playing in a bowl game. True, seasons can still be a bit disappointing, but hopefully a bowl win can take some of that sadness off fans' (and teams') chests and provide momentum going into the next season.
