Well, as long as the owners and trainers keep stretching the ways that they get their horses ready for each race, then in the big scope of things not too much will be really done to curb their questioned abuse here.
As far as the jockey goes, did he realize the horse had broken ankles during the race or not? I watched the race live, and Eight Belles raced really well for a horse that had two broken ankles (he finished second!). So, when did it happen? That's the real question. If it happened just as the horse crossed the finish line, then really there's not much to do to him. But, if it occurred sometime during the race, then he should be suspended.
If I am right, all trainers are instructed to pull the horse up if it is injured during a race. So, again, if it's proved that the horse was injured during the race, then the jockey purposely injured the horse so much that it had to be euthanized.
It's a sad occurrence, there is no doubt about that. Hopefully, a good resolution will come out of this. I guess we'll see if people besides PETA really care or not about what happened.

In the short term, there's nothing that the horse racing world either can or should do about the horses. Eight Belles was not the favorite, and although the odds were only 8-1 against her at one point, that was due to people betting on her because she was a filly, not because she was considered a legitimate threat to win the race (odds previously had been in the teens and even twenties). No jockey, no owner, would intentionally subject any horse to a grueling race with two legs injured, much less a horse with only a slim chance of winning. The people calling for Gabriel Saez's punishment are the same ones who unjustly blamed Edgar Prado for Barbaro's injury. Whipping is also guaranteed to stay around. It doesn't hurt the animals (consider the size difference between the jockey and the horse - I know from experience that even a direct punch in the nose doesn't do more than make a horse blink), and its a valuable tool for the jockeys. The biggest reason horses get hurt doing this is that they are still babies, still so young. Unfortunately, it's necessary to run the horses at an early age because otherwise the stallions become impossible to ride after a certain point, and the racing industry isn't willing to cut its champions out of the breeding mix.
In the long term, the most important thing the racing community can do is change the breeding practices. Thoroughbreds are too big for their spindly legs, and the owners have to expand the gene pool to introduce stronger legs into the thoroughbred lines. They have to expand what a thoroughbred is periodically anyway, so as to avoid excessive in-breeding and the continuation of hereditary faults, so it's not a stretch.

Having gotten a crash course in horse breeding and racing practices as a result of this hopefully my half - formed thoughts are clear on this.
I do agree with Onoto. There needs to be more horses brought into the breeding system. A lot of the breakdown is coming from the fact that the gene pool has gotten so small that according to Outside the Lines, all of this year's Derby horses came from the same horse; the last Triple Crown winner. There's got to be an expansion of the lines to make the horses built for durablity as well as speed. Otherwise horses are going to continue to breakdown as a result of hereditary faults.
As for the suspension call: Only if it could be proven that the jockey knew the horse was injured during the race (and honestly I don't know how he could short of feeling the horse's ankles break during the race but when it's going that fast, I'm not sure how the jockey could feel that), and still kept going, deliberately injuring it to the point of death. However from everything I've heard in the media most trainers and doctors are more or less in agreement that it happened after the race, so unless it's proven otherwise, then there's nothing to punish the jockey with in this case.
Truth be told I think Peta are a bunch of crackpots (and puppy killers themselves), so I take their call to action against anybody with a grain of salt, but like I said, if it can be proven that the Jockey knew the horse was injured and did further injury to it then yes, suspend in and contemplate criminal action against him. If as everybody says, he did nothing wrong, then Peta can go back to it's little cave.

RX_Sith - -1 for calling the filly "he", +1 for knowing jockeys are instructed to pull the horse up, -2 for not answering the question. You were supposed to come up with a solution or response and you said "hopefully a good resolution will come of this" which doesn't answer how the racing world should respond.
Onto - -2 Not a legitimate threat to win?!?! The filly came in second, how can you make that claim? If I had a mute button I would mute you for that. However, since I don't you get +1 for knowing that whips in races don't hurt the horses as they are in fact basically a steering wheel sometimes, and +2 for the solution of strengthening the bloodlines of the thoroughbreds
Juliet316 - kudos for trying, however Affirmed was the last Triple Crown winner and his bloodlines lived on in only 1 of the 20 horses. Even Seattle Slew who was the winner before only had 5 of the 20, which isn't bad. So -2 for not checking your source out. I like the idea of strengthening the bloodlines, however the horse with the most recent crossbreeding won the Derby, so I'm not so sure about that. You get +3 for calling PETA a bunch of crackpots though.
RX_Sith= -2
Onto= +1
Juliet316= +1

Cavs-Celtics game one was a throwback game. One that if you love offense made you throwback a lot of booze to make the game watchable. The Cavaliers lost by four, despite 2-of-18 shooting from LeBron James, who also threw in ten turnovers. Paul Pierce wasn't much better with 2-of-14 shooting, and Ray Allen is not pictured here, because he wasn't able to get a single point.
So tell me, close loss on the road: discouraging for the Cavs because he they couldn't steal a win on the road, or encouraging, because it was so close with such a bad game from their super-duper star?
We start this showdown with you, Onoto

It's definitely encouraging, as it tells me that the close series against Atlanta didn't wake the Celtics up. LeBron had an excellent first round, with four 30-point games as well as a triple-double, and his postseason rebounding and assist figures are above his regular season average. There's no reason to think that he'll repeat his Game One performance and surrender the series. Throw in the fact that Ilgauskas played a good game (22 points and 12 rebounds) and has done well so far during these playoffs, and there are plenty of reasons for Cleveland to remain optimistic. It would have been great to win one on the road, but they'll get some other good opportunities to prove themselves.
Boston, on the other hand, has to be worried that Kevin Garnett was the only really productive player once again. Ray Allen took only 4 shots through 37 minutes of play, which doesn't bode well for future production. It means that he was being removed from the offense, and the Celtics weren't able to capitalize to maximum advantage. If that trend continues, Cleveland is going to win this series in a cakewalk. Paul Pierce is the biggest culprit for their struggles in Game One, as he was the one who should have turned Allen's lack of opportunities into buckets. Such a poor performance was not unprecedented: Pierce has only played two genuinely good games this postseason, and his shooting percentage is more than .050 points below his season average (.409 to .464).
To sum up, Cleveland has performed well so far this postseason, so one off night is acceptable, even though it ended in a loss. Boston has not performed well this postseason, so the status quo is not acceptable, even though they managed to squeak out a victory.

I think it's a mix of both.
On the one hand, you have what is supposed to be the Next Michael Jordan having a terrible night against a team most believe are going to go to the finals against the Lakers. Top it off in the 4th Quarter Cleveland benches one of it's best players besides LeBron on that team and it doesn't bode well for rebounding off such a disappointing loss. Sometimes it's the close loss that despirits teams rather than the rout.
On the other hand, the team that everybody thinks is going to get the NBA trophy is playing equally as poorly, coming off a series where they almost lost to a team that was UNDER .800 and managed to squeak by and get into the playoffs. If the Cavs get it in gear and Boston continues the string of poor games, Boston may have a huge amount of trouble on its hands and a lot of angry fans who thought the 'triad' would lead them back to NBA gold.
Are we sure that Ortiz jersey didn't do a reverse jinx on Boston instead?

Point to Onoto for actually picking a side of the debate and sticking to it. No points for playing both sides of the fence in showdown, Juliet.
We turn our attention now to the National Hockey League. Conference Finals get underway tonight. And, we've got a one-seed and a two-seed trying to advance to play for Lord Stanley's Cup. Who's more likely to get upset, the Pens or the Red Wings?
Let's here it Juliet316 ...

Probably the Red Wings getting beat would be the bigger upset. They've had titles in recent years and it's been awhile for the Penguins (Like I said, I don't follow Hockey much at all but even I know that!). The Penquins struggled getting into the playoffs this far so I can't see them getting mush farther past the Red Wings.
It would be crushing to Detroit fans to see their team lose. They already deal with that enough with the Lions.

The Penguins have played beautifully during these playoffs, winning 8 of 9 games and posting the best Goals Against/Game figure through two rounds of play. The Red Wings have won 8 out of 10 games behind the postseason's leading offensive unit (3.82 Goals/Game, which when combined with their third-best GA/G, gives them the highest goal differential). Pittsburgh and Detroit have both played wonderfully this postseason, so we need to examine both their regular season play and their opponents to discover which team is more likely to get upset.
Detroit had the best regular season in the NHL, collecting 54 wins and 115 points while scoring the second-most amount of goals and allowing the absolute least. They easily clinched the top-seed in the Western Conference, outstripping San Jose by seven points. Pittsburgh also had a good regular season, finishing with 47 wins and 102 points, the second-best total in the Eastern Conference and the fourth-best in the whole league (tied with Anaheim). Their goals and goals against figures were good (top ten in both categories), but their overall performance was definitely not as good as Detroit's. As for their opponents, the Stars and the Flyers are practically identical. Dallas is a fifth-seed while Philly is a sixth-seed. Dallas finished the season with 45 wins and 97 points while Philly finished 42 wins and 95 points. I mean, they're both 8-4 this postseason!
After considering both sides, I must conclude that Pittsburgh is more likely to get upset (though I don't think they will, given how well they've played). Detroit has done more and their opponents are practically interchangeable.

Congratulations. See you in the championship game. Plus, now you get one post of face time to talk about whatever you want. Once you finish that, we'll go to the next round.

Thank you very much. It's been a fun game.
It's almost impossible for Boston sports to be ignored or undervalued, but somehow Daisuke Matsuzaka's wonderful start has not been met with much in the way of fanfare. The second-year starter has been leading the Red Sox rotation, and he boasts a 5-0 record and a skinny 2.43 ERA. He's only allowed 22 hits through 40 2/3 innings of work, which gives him the league's second-best Hits/9 total. But the most telling stat in my book is that he has yet to surrender a lead that his offense has gained for him. Dice-K is performing well, and he's a major reason for Boston's early advantage in the tight American League.
