This game needs to be played during football season. I know nothing about baseball or basketball and faked my way through it last time.

Then it's time to go Around the Arena ...
We start by hitting the Indians pitching staff, something nobody has been able to do recently. They've been getting clutch performances out of expected aces C. C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona, good stuff from Jake Westbrook, amazing contributions from youngster Aaron Laffey, grizzled veteran performances that exceed talent from Paul Byrd, and causing SportsCenter to make tired Chuck Norris Jokes about Cliff Lee.
Aaron Laffey pitched today and in the second inning gave up an unearned run, stopping the Indians scoreless streak for starters at a measly 44 1/3.
Still, here's the last six games for the Indians starters:
7 IP, 0 ER
9 IP, 0 ER
9 IP, 0 ER
7 1/3 IP, 0 ER
9 IP, 0 ER
7 IP, 0 ER
Let's go Around the Arena and find out about these Indians:
1) Are the for real, or is this a fluke and they'll be coming back to earth soon?
2) Are the comparisons to the Maddux-Smotlz-Avery-Glavine-Millwood-Neagle Braves a worthy comparison?
3) What should they do when Jake Westbrook returns from injury?
4) Does this pitching make them the team to beat in the American League?

Well, I have five Indians players on my fantasy baseball team (Victor Martinez, Cliff Lee, Aaron Laffey, Masahide Kobayashi and Casey Blake so I definitely KNOW they are for real since they have been performing superbly for my team especially Cliff Lee.
They should just get the Cy Young ready for Cliff Lee right now. He is absolutely pitching out of this world right now! 6-0 record, 0.67 ERA, 53.2 IP, 32 H, 1 CG, 44K's.
Aaron Laffey has a 2-2 record, 1.35 ERA, 26.2 IP, 18 H, 4 ER, 14 SO.
Masahide Kobayashi is now the Indians closer and he already has a 2-0 record, 1.86 ERA, 2 Saves in his 2 opportunities, 19 IP, and 13 SO.
So in a word, YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!, they are for real.
The comparison to the great Braves pitchers is well deserved right now. Carmona and Sabathia are finally back to form after having rough starts to this season.
When Westbrook returns from his injury, they should ease him back into the rotation (maybe a start when a string of games are scheduled back to back or a doublheader for a make-up game) to at least get him back into the groove again.
With the Indians in first place in their division right now, they have at least a little flexibility with getting him back into the rotation or as a long relief pitcher if he struggles.
Well, their pitching definitely makes them the team right now to beat in the American League Central Division. Detroit all but exploded out of the gate by starting 0-13; they are still last in the division with a 16-25 record and everyone was picking them to go to the World Series. Still they are only 6 GB, so if they turn it around in the second half, then they could pose as a pesky team to beat.
So, their closest competitors in their division at the moment are the Twins, White Sox and Royals. All are within 2.5 games back so again, they need to just concentrate on winning their division first.
The other American League frontrunners; Boston and currently Tampa in the East are also getting some great pitching at the moment. Then, the Angels and Athletics out in the West have some amazing pitching going for them as well. This is definitely the season for some breakout starters and falling relievers with a bunch of teams (Indians, Cardinals, Brewers, Rangers, Mariners, etc.) having their relievers struggle hugely or get hurt.
I see the Indians, Red Sox, and Angels as the teams winning their divisions. The wild card could go to just about any team right now (the Rays are hot in the East, the A's are performing well in the West, and the White Sox are in second in the Central.
So in the end, will Cleveland end the cities' misery and win a World Series Crown? I will predict right now the answer to be a big YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

I think they are for real, but all it takes is one or two bad injuries to bring the whole team back to earth. We've seen that plenty of times in sports to know that.
I'm not sure the comparisons are deserved or not since I don't follow baseball hardcore to make comparisons, however, just don't compare anybody to Nolan Ryan.
Well it depends on how he does in minor league rehab when he's cleared to pitch again. If he's good then they have another good pitcher and then I guess some decisions on roster movements would have to be made. If he's rusty, then they still have their star pitchers and they can give Westbrook some time to recover.
I would think this would make them the team to beat in the American League as more often than not, it's pitching rather than hitting that has won World Championships in baseball. But like I said, one or two bad injuries could change that mighty quick.

The Indians are for real, but obviously these performances are an aberration. I wouldn't call it a fluke, they just all got hot at the same time. I'm gonna need to see more then a weeks worth of shutouts before comparing them to the Braves old rotation though.
But they aren't the team to beat for one reason though. In their last 5 games they've been averaging 2.6 runs a game.
2.6
They haven't scored over 4 runs since their since last week. If they keep hitting this way, they're gonna have to shut everyone out just to win some games. If their starters still have quality starts and only give up 3 runs a game, they could still lose half their games.
They only have 2 players hitting over .270(and only 3 hitting over .240) and one of them has only 32 at bats. The other is Victor Martinez, who hasn't been driving in or scoring any runs... so his hits have all been a waste.
I don't even want to talk about Travis Hafner... but I will.
42 home runs two seasons ago. His power dropped down to 24 home runs last season and he's now on pace for 13 this year.
What happened to this guy? His batting average in those same seasons went from .308 to .266 to .222
So yeah, unless their pitchers continue to hold everyone to one run or less, this isn't gonna last.
