I had Da'Tara to show and Denis of Cork to win, so I had 2 of the top 3! (just not in the right spot)

tongue

Big Brown didn't have it. I could see it as the race unfolded that it wasn't going to happen. Horses have bad days, it could be the hoof thing, it could be the heat. They're saying he appeared to have a little stumble in the beginning for his hind legs when they broke out of the gate.

The jockey knew that, they can tell, and if I could see it then it was obvious to a lot of people. Kent knew he has a valuable horse underneath him and whipping him or continuing to try when he knew he had nothing left to give would've been wrong, so he just eased him up.

I'm surprised Da'tara went wire to wire. That's unusual for a long race like this, but he was able to ease up for the beginning and then just took off.

Da'Tara ran a beautiful race. He led early and pulled away late. Absolutely gorgeous.

Looked to me like Big Brown's jockey screwed up. He held up his horse numerous times (especially at the first turn, where he actually turned Big Brown into another horse instead of letting him run) and when it was finally time, Big Brown had said, "To hell with you." I know you can't spend the horse early on, but you also can't fight him for half the blasted race and expect him to cooperate. Big Brown certainly didn't look injured (apparently not to the vets either, since they didn't check him on the track), so I'm placing the blame on Kent Desormeaux.

Da'Tara is a Tiznow baby!!! That's my sire, though Colonel John who I wanted for the Derby because he was a Tiznow baby did nothing.

I disagree on the jockey thing as well. He was following orders to get Big Brown out of the confinement. He tossed his head until the jockey got him away from the rail where he was able to run in the clear. Many horses don't like to be boxed in like that. I don't think he quit on him from that. He still ran with the front runners after that and quit later.

I think it was something mental for the horse. It was very weird though. my only concern is that this will diminish the interest in the Derby and the Triple Crown races considerably.

I, for one, am glad that Big Brown didn't win today. I don't think that was the horse/trainer that the horse racing world wants representing them as the one to break the triple crown drought.

Yes to both. The trainer has quite the dramatic turnaround, but not someone who's going to get me hooked into horse racing. It was almost sickening how they proclaimed Big Brown the winner before the race started. It was bordering on arrogance, especially by the trainer. I was also disappointed that ABC completely ignored (well not quite, but pretty much) the actual winner. It's the Belmont, not the Big Brown show.

Very true. ESPN's crowing of Big Brown was eerily similar to their coronation of the Patriots this year and their coronation of USC as one of the all-time greats before their Rose Bowl against Texas.

They really should stop doing that. tongue

I'll defer to your greater knowledge, but Big Brown was clearly resisting the plan they'd laid out. I think he might have been better off letting him run, as that fight was just wasting energy. The jockey was between a rock and a hard place, though, so I dunno. I just think Big Brown had the energy and the drive, but when it was denied he lost a lot of energy and a lot willpower uselessly.
