Si.com has their listing of the top fifty ranking earners among US athletes. It starts with Tiger Woods at #1, with a whopping $127.9 million, followed by Phil Mickelson ($62.4 million), LeBron James ($40.5 million), Floyd Mayweather Jr. ($40.25 million) and Kobe Bryant ($35.5 million) rounding out the top five. The list ends with Eli Manning at #50 with $15.45 million.

I thought this could be an interesting topic to discuss a number of things.

Among them:

Are these salaries way out of control?
How does the system allow JaMarcus Russel to be on this list?

Also provided is the International Twenty, highlighted by David Bechham's $48.2 million.

So, yeah ... anyone wanna start off this with some thoughts?

Wow...Tiger has over double what the next guy does. That's incredible. First billion dollar athlete in a couple of years? That's crazy.

I wish I was an athlete.

I would say that the salaries are ridiculous...but oh well. Not much we can do about it. Besides, I would say that these guys aren't just athletes, they're entertainers as well.

As a golfer, I find it funny that the top two are golfers.

I don't think that the salaries are outrageous, considering how much revenue they generate for their sport or franchise. It's not their fault. But, I mean, come on. This kind of money is ridiculous. Maybe drop the ticket prices. Or even just concession prices. It really is outrageous what they charge for some things. I don't think it's justifiable at all from the owner position, but the players obviously deserve a large cut of whatever revenue is generated, they're the only reason people are there afterall.

I did a presentation on this a few years ago.

Personally, yeah I think the numbers are a bit outrageous, but it's to be expected. But when you have a country so focused on sports as the United States, the athletes should be raking in the big bucks.

Keep in mind for a lot of these guys, it's not their salaries that are driving their income so high, it's their endorsement deals.

I wouldn't mind being a high paid athlete but I would rather become famous for curing cancer or making cold fusion possible. Something that benefits humans.

Not to mention, that in a game like golf, they bring in a purse no? They basically earn what they do off of the game, by winning. It's not like he's handed a ton of money. Compared to the amount of money from endorsements that star players of any sport make, what they get paid by a team is peanuts.

The thing I've noticed with these lists is that its clear endorsements have to be included for the golfers (no way any golfer makes over 100 million just from winnings) but they often don't seem to include as much in endorsements for non-golfers, given that some are on TV just as often as Tiger, etc.

Either way, its a ton of money.

Do individual sportsmen (golfers, boxers etc) get "salaries" or is it money from winning fights/tournaments?

Soccer players get stupid amounts regardless of whether they play, or how well they play. But if people like Tiger are getting lots because they are doing well and winning, surely that's fine?

For golf and boxing, it's a little bit of both. There are some tournaments (like Dubai) that pay Tiger Woods something in the area of $6-10 million to show up. Then, there are other tournaments where he has to win to get a big payday. Same thing in boxing. A top-notch fighter can guarantee himself a large purse just for showing up to a fight.

Tiger and Phil have a ton more worldwide appeal than LeBron etc, I would imagine. Their endorsements are included but they're not nearly as large as the two top earners. Tiger gets $20m a year each from Nike and Gatorade.

And appearance fees in golf aren't as common, as far as I know (though they're certainly present.) However they must be pretty big, since Tiger 'only' made 10.8 in normal prizemoney.

In general, golfers don't get an appearance fee... though there are a few exceptions. Most of that money those golfers make is endorsements, and the rest are relying on winnings.
