The greatest one I've had to face was Kobe Bryant's rape case during the '03-'04 season, as it was difficult for awhile to accept the fact that a potential criminal was playing for the purple & gold. Never thought his image would bounce the way it has since a settlement was reached with the woman involved (which tells me that it was an episode of adultery, not rape). Now, I face another crisis: Manny Ramirez returns to the lineup of my beloved Dodgers tomorrow night in San Diego; his 50 game suspension due to PED use/detection of a PED masking drug over. Now, there have been past/current Dodgers (past: LoDuca & Gagne, current: Guillermo Mota), but none of them has the impact Manny potentially has (Gagne never really got to show his stuff in the playoffs because the Dodgers couldn't get there in his tenure, and when they did in '04, the bowed out in the NLDS). For years & years, I gave Barry Bonds/Giants numerous **** over his have potentially taken PED, always enjoying the mockery, de-legitimizing his stats). Now the Dodgers have their Barry Bonds, potentially. Meh.

I think its what he does from here that you should now focus on, if his numbers are just as good and he stays clean according to the tests he will no doubt be put through more regularly than before then it may be unintentional and he will be remembered as such.

However if his numbers drop off, then everyone will just say his stats were all to do with what he was doing and the drop of was due to being caught.

I'm (not actually) happy to see LA fans finally realize how SF fans felt with Bonds. And I can't blame them for their warm welcoming back of Manny, seeing as I rooted particularly hard for Barry as he played amongst his troubles. It's humbling to have the rest of the sporting world frowning on your team/athlete. When you're in this position, the argument of "stats over persona" magically appears as a safety blanket. Almost everyone can empathize with each other in the baseball world, whether they were forced to judge Bonds, Ramirez, Rose, the Black Sox, or any other embattled players.

Sooooooooo, Kob paying off a victim is completely different than your perception of Michael Jackson being guilty for the doing the same thing you assume Kobe didn't?

goes a bit farther than that given the woman's DECIDEDLY questionable background. she had something of a record, according to everything i read as it went on. i don't particularly like kobe, never have and did even less after that, but i honestly don't think he raped her.

Only one I ever had was when Travis Zachary (HB for Clemson in early 2000's) was kicked off the team for selling pot.

Kobe never had a history of being mean towards women before, or after his adultery with that gal in Colorado. Jackson had questionable behavior before the 1993 molestation accusations (carrying around Emmanuel Lewis on his shoulders to an awards show, for example), and a lot more after '93 (which lead to his 2005 trial).

The way I see it, negotiating your way out of a murder rap (I'm looking at you Ray Lewis!), where somebody has lost their life because of somebody else's actions is far FAR worse than taking steroids, where in that case your only hurting yourself in the long run (and the Dodgers have proven that a 'star' player getting caught isn't necessarily the kiss of death for a team).

I don't condone abuse of steroids, but there are far worse things that Manny, Barry, and A-Rod could have done.

OTOH, Kitwana Jones, a CFL player, jumped out of his car to join the chase after a purse and computer snatcher, helped run him down and held him down until the police arrived.

I find the allegations incredibly ridiculous. Why in the world would you wait? It is hard to prove rape anyways and you wait a year?

Women wait to bring charges because it can be very difficult experiences for such women. Even though there are rape shield statutes in most states, it is a very painful experience for women to bring rape charges, that many do not have the stomache for. Such women expose themselves to attacks on their character, a digging up of their sexual history and allegations that they "were asking for it" or "led the guy on". In many cases, the bringing of allegations, trying and prosecuting such claims can be as painful and traumatic to the woman as the rape and sexual assault itself. This is why women wait. It is not unusual for woman to delay bringing such claims because woman have to balance out their desire for justice against the fear of subjecting themselves to the above.

That's not why they wait; it's why they seldom do it at all.
