I always wondered if it´s a new Jedi trick we got to see in Ep 1 when the dioxis is filling up the conference room on the Trade Federation Starship. Nute said, "They should be dead by now." This gives me the feeling they held their breath for a long time or at least longer than humans can usually hold it. Then again, on Naboo they had to put on breathing masks for their travel to Otha Gunga City.

Discuss!!

Well I have tried holding my breath the whole time sinse when they started holding their breath to when they came out and started fighting the droids, and I did it not easily though. So either they have good lungs or they use some new force power.

It happened to see TPM just before i login.I know it is not a good explanation but I read in "Dark Empire" that Jedi could hold their breath or lessen their heartbeats,if required to,through the Force. They could is this way substain great harm of survive where "normnal" people couldn't.I agree with you though that I find it lame that Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon put these breath masks when went underwater.

Perhaps they put the breathing masks on when the room filled with gas then took them off as the doors opened.

they have good lungs

They have an incredible power to suck. When I saw them hold their breath for a long time, I couldn't help but think to myself, "Wow! They really suck!"

grin

In all seriousness, normal humans can hold their breath for 2+ minutes with some training (free-divers can get 150% normal lung capacity by packing air (saw it on Discovery)), so I imagine it was something similar. I think the swim to Otoh Gunga probably took a little longer than they could manage without the breathers.

EDIT:

I almost forgot. There's an early version of the script where Qui-Gon passes Obi-Wan an oxygen tube and says "Quick, my young padawan! Suck this!"

I can't imagine why it got cut.

I think its very possible that the force helps you hold your breath longer. In ANH, Luke is also able to hold his breath for a long time in the garbage dump. Maybe its possible that this was also caused by his strength with the force?

I figured it was a form of discipline they had, where they were so attuned into themselves, that they were able to survive on one breath for longer. Like stories where monks are able to quiet their minds, focus their energy, and manipulate their bodies like slowing their heartbeats or lowering their body temperatures, and so on.

The Force allows Jedi to move large, physically unmovable objects and to see future events, so why couldn't they use it to manipulate their breathing? It would make sense.

I always just took it as they held their breath for a really long time. In fact, I think I recall trying to hold my breath when they did in the movie. I think I recall being able to do it...barely.

Jedi can hold their breaths for a long time, that's all.

It's meditation and control.

There's a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic (bear with me) where the turtles are on a spaceship that's running out of oxygen. One minute they're scrambling around frantically, thinking they're doomed......

......but when their captors open the sealed hatch, 3 hours later!, all four turtles are in a coma like self trance induced state, meditating and, I agree with Loco, a condition whereby the heart rate and breathing lower considerably.

That's what I always thought when I see that sequence. If the turtles can bloody well do it, why not Jedi?

for everyone that says, "i tried holding my breath as long as tehy did, and it worked", ok first of all, there's a thing called real time, and a thing called movie time. they were in there longer than the movie shows. and i'm sure the trip under water was much longer than the stay in the room. and they had to swim, which is exerting energy.

When standing still the body does not burn the same amount of calories while in movement. The Jedi can use the Force to slow down thier metoblic rates, thus requiring less oxygen. Standing still would only help lessen the oxygen requirements. Also, dioxis(sp) is a fast acting gas and probably kill it's intended rather quickly.

While moving more calories are burnt, requiring more oxygen. Ever work out until your muscles burn? That the muscle screaming for oxygen. This would account for why the used breathers under water. They needed a constant supply of oxygen to continue to swim.

I know there are divers that plunge to great depth holding thier breath however, they actually move very little.

Actually I could easily see the Jedi being able to use the force to manipulate their own metabolism to the extent that they can hold their breath for quite some time beyond what a normal human being could... I'd think this would require much concentration and meditation though.

So basically, the dioxis came in, Qui and Obi sucked in one last breath and then went into a meditative state while waitng for someone to come get them and then when the droids came, and the dioxis cleared out of the room, and the Jedi woke up and went into fighting mode. happy

The swimming later on Naboo however required much physical activity so a meditative state to hold their breath wouldn't have done them any good. wink
