I think the venom is coming from the fact that he had so much screen time, that he was a major character. I perosnally think Salicious Crumb was the funniest thing in star wars, but even I would have tired of him had he been a mjor character.
Ever since that first part.... "Ex-squeeze me!"....
I like the Gungans as a whole, though. I think Tarpals would have made a much better major character

Personaly there will always be a little spot deep in my bowels that will want to pull a blaster on Jar-Jar. But I have grown to aknowledge him as one of the more annoying members of his race that all species have, after all not all Hutts can be bad, can they? Although if you want to get really down to the point, has any one else noticed that he is the main reason the clone wars started, even if he was just one of palpatines pawns.

I never understood why there was such a big problem with JarJar. I always liked him and thought he was a great character.

I never hated Jar Jar. Only one idiot did and people jumped the I hate Jar Jar bandwagon. He didn't even really do anything overly dumb. Some of the sutff may have been a bit childish, i.e. the fart and poo jokes. Other than that, Jar Jar wasn't bad. He was also like one of the first all digital charecters. He looked really cool.

I first saw TPM when I was 12...back then I didn't laugh at Jar Jar and I still don't.

Having jumped several pages here, I can only offer my views - which I can see echoed in one place or another.
1. Hate jar-jar? No. Love jar-jar? No.
2. My biggest problem with JJ is that he *was* so over the top. Esqueze me, I can deal with. The tongue at the table was irritating (and I think Q-G should have just spiked it the second time.) The whole "jump-into-water-with-a-triple-flip" annoyed the hell out of me - if they cut just that 5 seconds or so from the film, it would (IMHO) be much better, as far as that character.
3. Over the top, part two - the first films, the droids' bickering was the "comic relief." But it wasn't as in your face as JJ's lines and mannerisms. I can deal with the speech patterns (except "Sellow Fenators," which fortunately isn't on the DVD.) The second film, he's been toned down...
3. ... yet I still feel someone *else* should have been "fooled" by Palpatine into giving emergency powers. Or JJ should have been shown having matured more, and not as naiive.
4. I *am* somewhat hoping JJ's salvaged in RotS. Just a moment where he realizes (or is shown dealing with the realization) of what those "emergency powers" have done with the war, the Jedi slaughter, and the fall of the Republic. Just show me a *little* of that, and I'll overlook all the rest.

I know a lot of people who like Jar-Jar... even people I wouldn't expect to like him!
Including my mom, but then again she liked him from the start.

Here's the thing: As has been repeated many many times in this thread, Jar Jar was annoying. Yeah. But you know what? There are annoying people in life. I know. I've seen 'em. You just have to live with them.
Personally, I think the whole reason (besides getting lil' kids to see TPM) that Jar Jar was given so much screen time in Episode I, was to set him up as a complete idiot, so that it makes sense that he's duped into handing over emergency powers to Palpatine in AOTC. If he hadn't been seen at all in Episode I, then it would have just been some random senator guy who we saw for three seconds, and it would have no drama or meaning or whatever.
And the best part about that, is we get to blame Jar Jar for EVERYTHING!

So true, still hate that character though, although, good point bout needing someone to blame...although...well, he still didn't need to be in there, GL could have put someone else less ridicules into the role. Someone who wasn't necessarily a dummy, just naive and/or misguided.

I have a friend who adored Jar-Jar 99 and then decided he was crap bout 2001. He's not my friend now for slightly Jar-Jar related reasons :P I can't stand them cool people. Like something or don't; I think much of the Jar-Jar hating was just a group mindset really.

Jar Jar is nothing more than a waste of Terrabytes on the Lucas Film Computers. If Jar Jar did not act like an the "village idiot" some of us may have liked him more.

I never did hate Jar Jar. Sure, he's not my all-time favourite character in the TPM (that would be Qui-Gon Jinn) but he certainly doesn't spoil the film for me in any way. I remember thinking when I first heard his name that it sounded really cool and had that certain Star Wars ring to it.
I'm probably one of the older generation of fans on these boards (I'm 30+) but I didn't find him particularly childish or irritating...no more than the Ewoks are anyway - and I have no problem with them either.
I think poor old Jar Jar Binks gets a raw deal. In fact, I'd take a thousand Jar Jars over Kitster, Wald and all those other Mos Espa brats that Anakin hangs around with. That scene when his friends are all standing around his Pod Racer and mocking him is just painful for me to watch. "You're gonna end up bug squash". ARRRGGGHHHH!!! That scene isn't just bad, it's toe-curlingly cringeworthy!
