RE: Alderaan Blessings - Holiday FF Challenge (Bail, Dorme, 3PO, little Leia) **New post 12/24**
Hope everyone had a great Christmas!
RM
Why thank you! I was hoping that it would come out rather natural seeming
Arriss
Ahh, the song of Ban and Branwen.
Hee hee.
I enjoyed the way Winter was so overcome by the sight of Leia’s toys. Those that have so much tend to forget how fortunate they are.
Right, I figured that it would certainly seem like paradise to a girl who had nothing.
. I was surprised at how openly she talked about her real mother.
My reasoning behind that is that I seem to recall when I was really young that whenever I’d get a new friend we’d just blather about
everything
– I tried to depict Leia as being a rather lonely kid- so I figured it out would make sense that she’d just spill her heart out to anyone she got in contact with who was her own age.
I don’t know how much net time I’ll have over the next few days, but I’ll catch up
No worries, darling, enjoy your time w/ Mom and Hubby
RebelScumm
I always wondered if Leia knew she was adopted or not, and how much she did know about the circumstances. Not much undoubtedly... you did that really well.
I used the fact that Luke asked about Leia’s “real mother” in ROTJ as the clue that she probably did grow up knowing she was adopted. But I would assume, rather like Ben, Owen, and Beru to Luke, that Leia would’ve been sheltered from the truth of what really happened to her parents.
Reihla
The parts with Bail and Dorme are excellent character development. I always enjoy learning more about the folks we don't get to know in the films.
Right! Hee hee- I have to admit that the only reason that Bail Organa seems to be pretty well fleshed out is that I’m a huge Jimmy Smits fan- (LA LAW, NYPD Blue
) so it’s pretty easy for me to physically hear his voice in my head when I’m writing him. Dorme’s a little harder for me. But I’m glad you’ve enjoyed how I’ve depicted them.
My favorite part, though, was Leia's developing friendship with Winter. You've done a really nice job making their affection for each other believable and real.
I think that childhood friendships are some of the greatest things, because kids are so trusting, particularly with each other. I’m glad that I’ve managed to make them seem believable. I don’t have kids in my life and have to rely on memory- so if I actually succeeded in making their experiences realistic, I’m very pleased.
The Alderaani legend was a nice touch, too - especially the part about Branwen's white hair.
Hee hee! I have a confession- the tale of Branwen is one that I used in my EU epic “Destinies Entwined.” I had created it as being an Alderaan legend, so when I tried to decide what to write for a story- that was a completely natural choice!
Plus, cross-tying in my different stories isn’t a bad idea either
Qingauk
You are touching the hearts of many and showing what compassion is. This is so appropriate to the times.
Right.
Sandstorm
was really about family and coming together with the ones you love and making the best of your moments together in life. This story from when I started it, was about the spirit of the holidays, celebrating the traditions, but also in examining the charitable parts of the season.
Considering Bail was one of the leaders of the Rebellion (at least we always assumed so) I figured he’d have the biggest heart in the Galaxy, hence why I’ve depicted him as such.
Altaira
It was fun how Bail encourages them to imagine about Bail Ban and Branwen.
Hee hee- yeah I really liked that part too. Reminds me of parents encouraging their kids to continue to believe in Santa or things of that sort. It’s that ability to believe in the intangible, that helps make and keep life magical for kids. Once they stop believing, is when they grow up and that wondrous innocence in youth is forever gone.
You’re doing a great job showing Leia’s young life and the influences that shape her. This story is blending the good and bad that exists easily, and the simple things that help to make the bad more bearable.
I’m glad you like how I’m weaving things together in this tale. I think that both L&L probably had pretty good childhoods, they were loved, even if it wasn’t Padme and Anakin who raised them.
Striker
But the part about Branwen and Ban, do I detect a subtle cross-promotion here?
LOL! Very good eye, Striker
I’m so happy to see you over here! I wish more of my BTS readers would’ve found their way to these stories, expand their horizons
Rhonderoo
*waves hand in front of PLJ -you will write more in saga stories....
LOL! You know the worst thing is I’ve really enjoyed writing the characters in both of these stories and would love to write a story that focuses on the twins, but I just can’t help myself- my other BTS characters are
really
demanding. They crack that whip at me and MAKE me write about them
I’m also not very good at being schitzo and can’t really work on more than one story at once, otherwise, I would think about embarking on an exclusively Saga story. Course, give me time- maybe after Ep 3 comes out I’ll write it since I could then include those ever important spoiler details that we’re not allowed to touch upon yet in fanfic.
Now I must go catch up on To Court a Queen.
Hee hee! Woohoo! Go do that- the next story in that saga starts next week!
MissPadme
Leia and Winter's budding friendship was wonderfully-written.
Thank you!
For anyone who doesn’t know, Winter actually is an EU character who was Leia’s trusted nanny to her kids when they were young. Course it wasn’t until Jedi_Liz even mentioned her that I even knew they knew each other from Alderaan. Details, detail
The talk about The Past between Bail and Dormé was a nice touch of darkness in a sweet, warm story.
I try to incorporate more serious tones in my stories. Complete fluff, I don’t think, is all that fun to read. You need to have some drama to shake things up!
Ok, here's the last postie for this story! Thank you all for reading!

Part 5
As the crowds gathered again into the reception hall at noon, they were salivating from the enticing aromas of exotic blends of foods. Spicy, sweet wafts of meats, breads, and fruits assaulted their noses. Each person in the room’s eyes nearly bugged out of their sockets upon seeing the great mountains of food just waiting for them to dig into. They couldn’t believe their good fortune to be able to partake in such a wonderful feast.
Dutifully, Bail rose to his feet and the crowd silenced. A floating newsdroid, delivered to the Palace in the weeks prior to Emperor’s Day, hovered over the tables, fixating upon the Prince as he got ready to make his speech. Each word would be recorded and sent back to the Emperor for careful examination.
Clearing his throat, Bail attempted to fight down the rising taste of bile that he always choked on when he was forced to give these speeches to his false leader. Clenching his hands together across his chest, he began, “Today we give thanks. We give thanks to the man who brought unity and prosperity to our Galaxy.” His mouth dried upon speaking the lie. Still he pushed forward, “We were but lost, scattered souls, wandering aimlessly in the desert before the birth of the Empire. The Emperor’s superior intellect and his vast stores of knowledge and wisdom became the water of our soul’s salvation.”
From her seat, Leia’s chin dropped low and out of camera range. She scowled menacingly at the floor. Dorme noted her daughter’s defiant glare and snaked a hand under the table and love tapped Leia’s leg encouragingly. Sighing deeply and knowing her duty, Leia forced a smile onto her face and stared at her father. She wasn’t going to fail him.
Bail noted Leia’s struggle and felt his heart swell with pride. He concluded, “This bounty before you is but a taste of the wealth that he blankets our Galaxy with. Please, partake and enjoy! All hail The Emperor!”
Hoorays filled the hall. And as Bail slunk into his chair, the poorest people of Alderaan dug into the greatest meal of their lives. As the final courses were consumed, the entire castle suddenly flooded with blinding light…the engineers had gotten the power back on.
The townfolk received this unexpected turn of events with a mixture of joy and bitter resentment; happy to see it restored, sad to realize that they would be back in their own dreary homes and back to their dull lives soon.
Sensing the depressed air dampening the spirits of the room, Bail rocketed to his feet and declared, “The power may be back on, but please know that I do not expect you all to immediately depart after eating. There will be dancing and games in the great ballroom. From the bottom depths of my heart, and from my family’s hearts, I thank you all for helping bring some extra cheer into our homes on this Emperor’s Day.”
The townsfolk clapped and praised their kind Prince. Then conversation turned to murmurs, as they wondered what kinds of entertainment lay ahead.
Clearing his throat, Bail added, “I would also like to say that I have greatly enjoyed this day and would like to make this a yearly tradition. Every Emperor’s Day from this day forth, the House of Organa will open our doors to our town and share in the joy of the occasion with each of you. You are the cornerstone of Alderaan’s society. Your hard work and dedication keeps the wheels of commerce turning and help us to maintain our peaceful and prosperous way of life. From the bottom of my heart, I thank each and every one of you.”
Bowing deeply, Bail sat down. His cheeks burned as collectively the people launched to their feet and gave him a standing ovation. Leia’s hands blurred together as she clapped her hands in pride for her Daddy.
The engineers who had put all of their strength into getting the power back online were brought into the Palace, defrosted, were fed, and joined in on the after dinner fun. At the reception recordings of traditional Alderaanian folk music played and the people enjoyed coming together in rapid, rhythmic, ritualistic dances.
Leia and the orphans wove their way in and out of the crowds of kicking and stomping feet playing hide and seek. Their squealing laughter punctuated the festive air.
As the afternoon wore down to a close, Bail noted that the storm had finally broken. The entire world was blanketed in a crisp layer of fresh fallen snow. The fading sun turned the white blanket a warm orange glow. After gathering their cloaks, the townsfolk stood outside waiting to reluctantly climb into the Royal Shuttles that would take them home. Before the doors of their rides opened, Bail had one last surprise to share to all. From the roof of the Palace a glorious display of fireworks erupted into the night sky. The rockets launched so high that they could be viewed by those in town who were fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to have had their power throughout the night and had missed out on the other Palace activities.
Before entering the cabs of the shuttles, each townsperson was handed a box filled with food, and a steaming mug of choco. Bail Organa’s reputation for being the most generous of planetary benefactors grew to astronomical levels after that night. For all that he had been forced to give that speech about the virtues of the Emperor, his people knew who really supported them, and it wasn’t some distant political figurehead. And from that day forward, each person took a little more pride in his or her step as they headed to work, knowing that their Prince appreciated their efforts, and that next year, they would be graced by his generosity, again.
***********************
The Organas gathered around the roaring fire in their study after the townspeople had all left. The Palace seemed deathly quiet. The rich, calming, earthy smells of the fire reassuringly tickled Bail’s nose. He lifted a steaming cup of caff to his lips and took a long swallow of the bitter, but addictive drink.
Threepio placed the final box on the floor next to Leia and stared at the Princess with confusion. Waddling over to Prince Organa, he asked, “Is Her Highness feeling unwell? Mistress Leia appears to not be interested in her gifts. I will gladly bring her a cup of pallenberry juice, if she needs the fluids.”
Gazing at his daughter with understanding he responded, “Thank you, Threepio, but she’s not sick. She’ll be alright. You can go now.”
“Oh, alright, come along Artoo,” Threepio said, gesturing to his silver and blue counterpart. Stopping at the door, he added, “Master Organa, may I say that you gave a wonderful speech to the Emperor today. He will be most pleased.”
Bail’s eyes darkened and he scowled. Before replying he took another long drink from his mug and then answered, “Yes, Threepio, that is what is important. I’m sure he will be pleased.”
“Yes, Sir,” Threepio agreed, and then he and Artoo left the study.
Absently raking the soft yarn strands in the carpet with her fingers, Leia’s head drooped in misery; she missed her new friend.
Bail and Dorme shared a knowing stare. A pile of unopened gifts sat on the floor beside their depressed daughter.
Dorme decided to tackle the issue. “Don’t you want to open your presents, Leia?”
“No,” she growled.
“Why not?”
“I don’t need anything.”
Bails eyebrows rocketed towards his receding hairline at that statement. “But you haven’t even opened them, yet, How do you know if you need them or not?”
“I have more stuff than I can ever need or use. There are others out there who have nothing. Give these to them,” she proposed, pulling her knees tightly up under her chin.
“They were purchased for you, Leia,” Dorme stressed.
“I DON’T WANT THEM!” Headstrong Leia roared. A trail of tears traveled down her cheek.
Venturing into a territory ripe with heartache, Bail asked, “And what do you want, Leia?”
“I want you to adopt Winter,” Leia stated, pouting.
“Leia…”
“But we have plenty of room for her, you’d never even notice she was here!” she reasoned.
“Honey, we can’t adopt every child who needs a home. As much as I would love to do that, we just can’t,” Bail explained.
“Why not, you’ve done it before,” she spat, chin jutting up defiantly.
Dangerous waters churned, one misstep, and they could all be pulled under by an emotional undercurrent.
Coughing, Bail’s mind churned. He knew that with her exposure to the plans for the Rebellion that Leia’s youth was quickly slipping away. Bail knew that he needed to do everything in his power to keep her young and innocent, for as long as possible. So, he opted for a compromise. “Perhaps we could arrange to have the children brought here a couple of times a week so you could play with them all. That way you’ll get to see your friend on a regular basis.”
Face brightening, Leia whispered, “You would do that for me?”
Heart breaking, Bail answered, “Yes, Leia. I could do that. I’m certain Nicco would be very pleased to have the children brought here.”
“Can we send them some of my toys? I’ll never use them all,” Leia offered.
Reaching down her hand, Dorme stroked Leia’s soft, silky loose hair and answered, “We can certainly send away some of them. Instead why don’t you decide which toys you’d like to use with the children and we’ll take one of the rooms in the Palace and convert it into a large playroom for when they come over.”
Mulling over the idea, Leia nodded. “Just make sure it’s on the first floor. Some of the kids can’t walk very far.”
Shaking his head, Bail never failed to be impressed by the endless depths to his daughter’s observation skills, and generous spirit. Simply, he said, “I think that can be arranged.”
Leia beamed. With her heart now lightened, she flickered a glance at her pile of gifts.
Grinning delightfully, Bail ordered, “Go ahead and open them.”
Gleefully, Leia tore into the packages, marveling at the new cloaks, hair accoutrements, datajournals, and dolls that emerged out of the boxes. In her excitement as she tore open the packaging, her heart embraced her age as she reveled in the joy of discovering the contents of her gifts.
Dorme crawled back onto the couch next to her husband and nestled the top of her head onto his shoulder. Lacing their fingers together tightly, their hearts melted with joy at the sight of Padme’s daughter tearing into her presents. They could never have asked for a greater treasure than the girl who had been dropped into their care so long ago. She was the gift that continued to give. With each passing day, more and more of Padme’s gracious spirit shined even brighter from Leia’s soul. And with the values that they continued to instill into the child, Bail and Dorme had little doubt that one day, she would be strong enough to pick up her mother’s torch and would help to banish darkness from the Galaxy, forever.
The End

Excellent compromise. Wanting give her stuff away is certainly a Leia trait. You should write more in this era. I love reading stories about the twins.

The people of Alderaan did have another fine day to enjoy the generosity of the Organa’s. I’m glad they would carry the kindness that was shared with them.
Leia is insightful for her young years. The solution of bringing the children to visit regular will help all. I suspect things will improve all around on Alderaan.
This has been a nice day trip into Leia’s early life. You have showed how kindness can touch so many. A terrific companion piece to
Sandstorm Celebration
Thanks for the holiday stories.

Sniff...
That was so touching... Almost teared up when they mentioned Padme and poor Leia not knowing anything.
Leia telling Winter about her mother was really fitting.
Lovely story...
Hehe... Looks like other people want you to write more in this era!

What a perfect ending! It just warmed my heart to read how generous she is and how perceptive. Oh how some kids grow out of that trait into selfish young adults. This was a lovely story with a moral and should be shared. I hope they post it in the archives for others to read. I bet if Padme read it, she would be so proud of her daughter!
Thanks for this PLJ.

Great story, PLJ! I loved the incorporation of the Branwen legend into this story. One must wonder just how common a trait it is for one to have white hair. Could Winter be distantly related to the characters of the legend?
You've really captured Leia's spirit. As Han realizes later, Leia will never be satisfied as long as there is injustice.
It's a good thing that ol' Palpy didn't have a broadcast going. I don't think Bail would have stood for it!

What a very touching and heartwarming story, one that captures Leia's personality really well. It's the type of story that I used to run in my old Leia fan fic zine years ago. Thanks for sharing it.

What a lovely ending. Merry Christmas (or Emperor's Day, as the case may be) to all and to all a good night!
Leia is the perfect mix of mature for her age, but also exactly her age. You wrote her perfectly I think. What an interesting juxtaposition to Luke's character.
Thank you for both your holiday stories!!

OH! what a sweet X-mas time story
PadmeLeiaJaina
!
Your story was very realistic and reminded me real historical things.
When Hungary was a part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire the royal family, Emperor Franz Josef I his wife, Elisabeth (the famous Empress Sissy) and their children spent their wintertime in Hungary in the Castle of Gödöllõ from 1868. They invited the poor kids for Christmas into the castle. Their daughter the little princess enjoyed to spent time and gave presents to the kids.
Reading your story was real fun congrats.

I'm back.
Loved both of the last two posts, especially the Leia/Winter interaction.
Again, I have to say that I love the way you've filled out Bail's character. The values and morals he cherishes are carried on in his adopted daughter. It is very easy to imagine why Leia grew up to be the leader she did, with this man as her father.
I also liked Dorme's kind influence in the story, and the sad memories of the past for Bail and Dorme, and Leia.
Great story! I really enjoyed.

Thank you all for reading. I know many of you are requesting that I write more in this forum, but unfortunately it will be a long time before that will happen. With the same levels of love and dedication to character development that I put into this story and
Sandstorm Celebration
I put into my EU fics. I hate the way that the EU has veered off course in the books, and I believe that the stories no longer even feel like SW.
In my fanfic writing I am working on reinventing the EU in my own way. And starting tomorrow I’m about to embark on another full-scale epic story to be posted in that era of the boards.
Maybe one day I’ll return here and actually write a large story that probably would be an inter-trilogy tale, but for now, my EU characters are still screaming at me to continue exploring their further adventures.
It’s been fun writing here! Thank you all for sharing in my holiday fics
RM
Wanting give her stuff away is certainly a Leia trait.
I thought that seemed like the perfect Leia thing to do.
You should write more in this era. I love reading stories about the twins.
You all would probably have to give me time, I’m still deeply stuck into my wanting to rewrite/reinvent the EU stage. Maybe after Ep 3 comes out I’ll launch a full scale fanfic here.
Altaira
You have showed how kindness can touch so many
This story was all about charity of the holiday season and putting compassion before yourself. I’m glad that that translated well.
Padlei

I know, the poor twins
Hehe... Looks like other people want you to write more in this era!

Nice try, Padlei, but I’m about to embark on another large scale EU epic, I won’t have much extra time to work on anything for in here
Glad you enjoyed!
Qingauk
Oh how some kids grow out of that trait into selfish young adults.
Yeah, that’s very true. I always considered Leia to be very unselfish, so I figured a lot of how I wrote her was very fitting and appropriate to her character.
I bet if Padme read it, she would be so proud of her daughter!
LOL! Possibly
Tych
I loved the incorporation of the Branwen legend into this story. One must wonder just how common a trait it is for one to have white hair. Could Winter be distantly related to the characters of the legend?
Well you know, I just couldn’t resist. Figured I needed to incorporate something that my fellow BTS readers would know understand and that maybe you all would get a kick out of reading that legend again in a new light
I hadn’t really thought of Winter in that way, who knows
As Han realizes later, Leia will never be satisfied as long as there is injustice.
Well that is why she’s the greatest of all politicians. She doesn’t care about herself and only about others. Glad you enjoyed!
MissPadme
It's the type of story that I used to run in my old Leia fan fic zine years ago.
Really? Humm, maybe you should repost some of them here
RebelScum77
Leia is the perfect mix of mature for her age, but also exactly her age. You wrote her perfectly I think. What an interesting juxtaposition to Luke's character.
I always felt that Leia was way more mature than Luke. The fact that she really understood what went on in politics also helped. ‘Tis rather like Ani and Padme, isn’t it?
Glad you enjoyed!
Striker
Leia wanting to give her presents away is definitely something she'd do.
Well I certainly thought so. Leia’s not the slightest bit selfish. Glad you enjoyed.
zsuzsa
Wow! Very cool story! I’d never heard that before. Sheesh, I love it when I inadvertently manage to write something that’s sorta true. Thank you for sharing!
Liz
I thought she was very selfless, glad you enjoyed
Lex

Thank you! I’m going to assume Bail’s going to come out as being one of the only remaining members of the Imperial Senate who has any kind of a morale center by Ep3, so that’s what I used as a base for writing him.
I also liked Dorme's kind influence in the story, and the sad memories of the past for Bail and Dorme, and Leia.
Thank you! I had hoped to make a nice blend of everything.

RE: Alderaan Blessings - Holiday FF Challenge (Bail, Dorme, 3PO, little Leia) **Completed 12/26**
Wonderful story! Good luck in the competition
. I completely sympathize with Bail (and with Leia) when he makes his “thanks to the Emperor” speech. I can just see him doing and saying many such things to protect his family during the founding of the new empire! Leia’s anger in particular seems completely in character for her – as was her generosity with her possessions.
Hm. If you aren’t writing more saga stuff I guess I’ll just have to meander over to the post-saga board

Wonderful ending to a special story.
Little Leia playing hide and seek and just being able to be a kid. *sigh*
And her own unselfishness to give to others when she has so much.
The generous nature of Bail Organa – his hospitality is endless! Although his having to suffer through such a fake speech – brrr, <expletive> Palpatine.
This really was a very enjoyable read, dear. You put a lot of thought and care into this story, but then when don’t you?
Kudos!
