RE: Spirit Warriors of Angharad (66/?) 7/16
Hey, where's
diamond_pony2002
? We've got a mush alert here.
Mmmm . . . mush.
****
Next Obi-Wan pulled out his data reader and contacted Anakin again. The boy had already spoken with the group’s guides, who said the only way out of the gorge was to follow the Kilaiya some twenty kilometers to the west to the point where it joined the Shasti. After that, they would follow that river north to the trail that wound its way up to Nidawi. Nobody thought it was a good idea to try and walk to Wemilat; the long detour west would more than double the travel distance and would necessitate at least one, maybe two, extra nights in the open. The guides’ advice was that Obi-Wan get Matreya back to Nidawi and then use a speeder to get her to safety after a rest.
It was not news that Obi-Wan wanted to hear, but he couldn’t exactly argue with it. He was even *less* happy with the idea of leaving Anakin alone and essentially unsupervised with a sinister being stalking him through the woods. “I want you to report in to me every quarter hour,” he told Anakin over their datapad connection.
“master I cant do that I have to help people keep moving,” Anakin wrote back.
“You don’t need to write me an encyclopedia,” Obi-Wan wrote back. “I just need to know where you are and that you’re still on your feet.”
“the datas incrypted but the transmission location isn’t,” Anakin replied. “anybody could follow our signals back to where we are especially if I transmit so often.”
Unfortunately, he had a point. Obi-Wan and Anakin might well have the only datapads on this side of the mountains, and any transmissions would stand out like a lighted beacon. He was Jedi enough to agree that he and Anakin should keep electronic communication to an absolute minimum, but he was human enough to hate the idea of having the boy out of contact for so long. The Force would let Obi-Wan know that Anakin was alive and give him an idea of his general welfare, but no more than that.
“Fine,” Obi-Wan wrote back, feeling a very un-Jedilike sense of dread as he selected the letters, “but you’re to contact me immediately if there’s an emergency.”
“Yes, master,” Anakin wrote back.
//Oh, a comma and everything,// Obi-Wan thought. He supposed that Anakin’s unusually orthodox typing was meant to indicate a serious shouldering of responsibility—or at least to pass for it. “May the Force be with you, young one,” he wrote.
“may the Force be with you too master i love you,” Anakin wrote, the words spilling across Obi-Wan’s datapad screen like a glowing river of text.
Obi-Wan gazed down at Anakin’s words, wishing the boy hadn’t written that—-not now, when it felt like another heavy weight dropped on top of the burdens he was already carrying. He’d tried many times to explain to his student that Jedi didn’t set their emotions aside because they were inhuman underneath, but because they were all too human. How Obi-Wan was supposed to fulfill his duties as a Knight with his feelings for Anakin in the forefront of his mind he really didn’t know. With fingers made a bit clumsy with stress and the bite of the flexsteel cable, he typed back the only thing it was possible to say, “I love you too, Padawan.”
“see you in nidawi later master bye,” Anakin wrote.
Obi-Wan couldn’t bear to write “goodbye,” so he carefully typed, “See you in Nidawi.” Then the time and date stamp of Anakin’s signoff appeared and the screen went blank. Obi-Wan snapped the cover firmly shut and replaced the datapad in his belt pouch.

LOL! Okay, you're entitled to hate Anakin if you want. I don't, but I agree that he's got flaws bigger than the crack in the Liberty Bell.

Re who is to blame for Skywalker's fall: I believe he's a knight by the time he makes the choice -- an adult in Jedi land. I don't read much/any debate about whether Yoda is responsible for Dooku's fall??? As for the poll in which Padme is leading Obi-Wan on the fault file, I've had "enabler" vibe from her since the Tusken slaughter.
Great discussion about Lucas and his characterization of both Luke and Obi-Wan in the "Is Akira Kurosawa the key? Ep 3" thread. bad_radio makes the case that Lucas made both Obi-Wan and Luke the "Kurosawa hero" of the following description:
"The Kurosawa hero is a man who continues in the very face of certain defeat. He refuses to give up even after everyone else is convinced he has already lost. This is the reason that he is always alone. And seemingly certain failure is not all. Even more subtle temptations lie in wait." (Donald Richie, The Films of Akira Kurosawa, 1965)

Good point. I've always maintained that Anakin has to be at least mostly reponsible for his own fall, otherwise his choice to toss the Emperor down the reactor shaft has no meaning. The guy becomes a puppet on a string instead of a Chosen One-turned-villian-turned-Chosen-One. I won't dispute that he would have been better off if things had gone differently for him at points, though.

Yeah . . . once I read this post by this fan, whose name I can't remember, who said that they met Terry Brooks at a book signing, and that he said that George Lucas said that Padmé should definitely come across as an enabler.
How's that for a convincing source of information?

Hmm . . . Luke and Obi-Wan as absurd heroes, huh? I could see that. I'll have to check that thread out.

Hmm, just a little bit this time . . . 'cause this is the end of chapter 7. Yikes! I'm still editing bits of chapter 8 . . . although the beginning should be ready to go.
****
He was glad that his voice sounded calm and reasonable as he said, “We’re going to need to head west, and then turn north toward Nidawi again, my lady. I’m afraid we won’t reach the village by tonight, but we may make it by tomorrow afternoon if we set a good pace.”
Matreya’s eyes widened a little, as if she didn’t like the idea of spending a night in the open any more than he did. Worse, she’d been looking forward to comparative safety, and now Obi-Wan was leading her back into harm’s way. All she said, however, was, “Of course, Master Jedi.”
She probably had no idea how much Obi-Wan appreciated her quiet acceptance of their situation. Few would have blamed her if she were hysterical by now, but hysteria was one thing he really did not need to deal with at the moment. He managed to maintain an air of stoic calm as he led her westward through the tree-filled gorge, but his feelings would have betrayed him to any Force user within thirty meters. He’d gone two nights with almost no sleep, and had had no time to sit in deep meditation.
He was haunted by the mental image of the tattooed Zabrak who had struck down Qui-Gon seven years ago. The Sith had actually seemed to *shed* darkness, as if its mere presence could darken and taint anything that came near it. For a short time, that taint had marked Obi-Wan as well, and he had never forgotten the horror of that experience.
Obi-Wan had been twenty-five years old at the time, and near Knighthood. What would a presence like that do to a vulnerable sixteen-year-old boy who was out of all contact with his Master? It was not something Obi-Wan even wanted to think about.

Well, I'll put it this way . . . Vengeance sure doesn't lose.
The actual brawl is pretty well into chapter 8, though, so it'll be a little while

LOL! Hi, I'm slowly (very slowly
) catching up, but the big mush alert at the beginning of that post caught my eye. Just wanted to say that Anakin's bad typing was a great touch. After all, how many people seriously take the time to type properly when IMing?
And I especially liked how Obi-Wan didn't want to say goodbye, as though that little farewell has so much finality to it. Anyway, I'm not making sense, so I'll just go finish reading this.
edit: Just curious - is Angharad an Arthurian name? Sounds familiar.

No problem,
solojones
. . . have fun! Who are you going to see, by the way?
Welcome,
JadeSolo
! And yeah, I figured that Anakin probably didn't have the patience to worry about capitalization and punctuation, especially since I've never seen an image of a datapad with a keyboard attached. Writing with one might be like using those little poke-and-type keyboards on a PDA . . . and those are annoying.
Just curious - is Angharad an Arthurian name? Sounds familiar.
You win the obscure information prize of the day!
Yep, I got the name out of "The Writers' Digest Character Naming Sourcebook," in the Arthurian names section. The book offers this helpful background information on the name: "The love of Peredur."
Oh, yes. Her.
On a whim I ran the name through Google and was shocked to get 31,600 results. Apparently it's a fairly common Welsh women's name. Good catch, though!

Actually, we start with a little "sympathy for the devil."
****
Darth Vengeance crept slowly through the underbrush, following Skywalker and the group of refugees as they made their way toward Wemilat. His relative success at the bridge had left him feeling confident and flushed with power. He hadn’t managed to kill Skywalker, it was true, but he’d separated him from his hovering nursemaid of a Master, and that was the first step toward Vengeance’s goal.
If Skywalker hadn’t been such a threat, Vengeance’s could almost have contented himself with neutralizing the Sith-killer-–which was more than his predecessor had managed to do. Surely, Sidious would have to realize that.
Yet Skywalker *was* a threat, and he would have to be dealt with. However, the Sith allowed himself to gloat as he continued to steal through the trees. Everyone had underestimated him: Kenobi, Skywalker, even Sidious. He gave a fang-studded smile as he thought about how Sidious would find it harder to set him aside than he’d thought.
In his current celebratory mood, it pleased him to toy with his quarry. He stalked them as a hunter stalks wild game: moving toward the front of the column, getting so close that he could almost strike one of the guides with the butt of his rifle, then letting the ragtag group of beings pass by unharmed. He would deny himself the satisfaction of striking until the moment was sweetest.
He wanted to get Skywalker alone, but was prepared to wait until the young Jedi and his guides got rid of the wretched, straggling humans. Simply destroying them all one at a time would be satisfying, but it would also be effort wasted on worthless targets. Sidious’ discipline had proved near-fatal at times, but it had taught him that a Sith warrior did not wreak uncontrolled destruction as the mood struck him. A Sith was patient; he watched and waited until his enemy was at his weakest. Then he struck once, and struck hard.
At great length, the slow, straggling line made it to Wemilat, much to Vengeance's relief. His tolerance for the pathetic creatures was wearing thin.
Unlike Nidawi, which was built on a gently-sloping plateau, Wemilat looked as if it had been hacked out of the steep sides of the mountain itself. The front sides of the buildings were piled field stone, while the sides ran straight back to the jutting slope itself. The rock provided plenty of shadowy purchases for Vengeance to cling to as he watched.
To his eye, the residents of Wemilat looked even more poor and pitiful than those of Nidawi. He couldn’t imagine what kind of sanctuary the refugees thought they would find here. A crowd of skinny children met the group from Nidawi in what passed for the town's main street, and they made more than enough noise to attract one of Angharad's fearsome mountain tigers--not that any of them had enough meat on their bones to make it worth the animal's while.
Vengeance's lip curled up in an expression of disgust. He'd always hated the poor. The Sith valued hatred as a source of great power, but this hate brought back unwanted images of another life; one with empty bottles of cheap liquor rolling across a dirt floor. He scored the rocks deeply, raising prickles of blood around his claws as he tried to drive the repellant images away.
