You can't kill Joram, really you can't! I'll boycott, LOL! A great story, Merida and Joram are nicely developed as characters. I loved Varik's family! They seem to have just taken her in and made her part of the family. Now, where's Joram? Naboo being gone is bad enough, you can't kill Joram too!

That stinky old Palpy! Destroying Naboo, that just sucks! I really hope you let Joram find her, but you probably won't. Love it, Merida and Joram are very nicely portrayed.

#15

Word reached our isolated planet months after the event, but Chancellor Palpatine was soon declared Emperor Palpatine. Explanations and reasons were given, of course, and many believed his tales for a while. But I felt that the man had developed a taste for power and loathed to let go of it. The war had worked to his advantage and he was going to use that to solidify his power.

I mourned for all of those who had lost their lives. There were so many who would have no one to remember them. They would be forever nameless and without a face, because those who loved them were now gone, too. Commander Skywalker was dead, General Kenobi was simply gone, as was Senator Amidala. The list went on and on, it seemed endless.

I settled into my new life on Tatooine. A year after the destruction of Naboo I finally faced the fact that my old life was over and Joram was gone. I had Keilum and that would have to be enough.

Soon, Larin tried to encourage me to date and perhaps find love again. I declined her advice, I had found love once and it had been incredible and passionate. It would be folly to expect to find something like that again and I would settle for nothing less. Joram had not been perfect, but he had been perfect for me. I, like so many others, simply had to accept my loss and survive.

We watched as our new Emperor began to institute new policies. Outer Rim planets such as Tatooine, Ryloth, Pzob, and a dozen others became havens for non-humans driven from the Core worlds by Palpatine’s new laws. At first they came because economic opportunities became limited for non-humans. Then life became inconvenient, and before they realized it, their lives were in danger. None of his new laws seemed to strike any one group with a swift blow, but over time the iron grip of his rule was felt just the same.

The kindly, elderly face now appeared sinister to my eyes, and sometimes I wondered at the fate of Commander Skywalker and General Kenobi. Palpatine’s edict calling for the extermination of all Jedi made his feelings for that ancient order quite clear. Yet he had made a Jedi Knight his personal bodyguard and that Jedi had died protecting him. Had he arranged for Skywalker’s death? There was no way to know, but I had my suspicions.

I hoped that General Kenobi had escaped the emperor’s scourge of the Jedi. Now Joram’s words about Kenobi’s sadness when Skywalker was assigned to guard the Chancellor made much more sense. Kenobi had sensed disaster but had been unable to avoid it. And his friend had died.

Palpatine’s path to the throne was littered with heartaches and corpses. I kept these thoughts to myself, having no desire to end my days in an Imperial prison. I am no one important, so I held my tongue and tried to live each day as it came.

I stayed on the farm to help Larin. I had no where else to go and she urged me to stay. Arix was now a skilled farmer and would one day own the farm that would have belonged to Varik. I held him one night in the garage as he sobbed out his pain over his brother’s loss. He had loved his brother and admired him as only a younger brother can. To him, Varik had been all that he aspired to as he grew to manhood. He was only a few years my junior, but I felt decades older.

Life on Tatooine has never been easy, but the hard work has an honesty about it that is rewarding. I learned to pick mushrooms that grow on the vaporators and to make a delicious stew with them. I often longed for a bit of shaak meat to add to it, but shaaks no longer existed. As far as I knew, they had lived only on the planet of Naboo, and they were yet another victim of Palpatine’s rise to power.

Then one day my life changed directions once again. Sometimes the winds of fate send our lives spinning in a direction that brings unimagined pain and sometimes we are given unexpected joy. Fate was kind this time.

I was working on a vaporator, yet another skill I had learned, and I was hot and irritated. I was sweaty and dirty, and my hair must have resembled a red cloud around my head. And then I looked up and my life changed.

Two dusty, battered, and painfully thin men climbed out of a speeder and thanked the driver. Each held a small bag of belongings and they limped toward me as fast as they could. I could do no more than scream for Larin before I launched myself at the shorter man and literally bowled him to the ground so that he was flat on his back in the sand.

The face now had a long scar running down the left cheek, and it was dirty and thin. But the eyes, yes the eyes were his. Against all odds and back from the dead, my Joram had kept his last promise to me and come home.

His hand shook as he touched my lips. “You did it, you trusted me and you escaped.” There was a wealth of love and gratitude in his words. My love and trust for this man had literally saved our lives.

“I’ve always trusted you, love.” I helped him to his feet and watched the joyous reunion between Varik and his family.

Keilum came running out behind Tomira and ran up to Joram. To Joram’s shock and delight, Keilum wrapped his sturdy little arms around his father’s legs and announced, “Daddy’s home!”

And so he was.

Epilogue:

Varik and Joram related the story of their journey home and why it had taken so long. Joram and the rest of his troop, some fifty men at that time, were gathered up and put into a prison camp for “re-education.” Varik had been out on patrol with another unit at the time and was not imprisoned with the others.

Varik had become a deserter at that point, a capital offense. But instead of fleeing home to Tatooine and safety, he had gone into hiding near the camp. It had taken him six months to find the right moment, but he helped Joram and six others, all that was left of the troop, escape the camp. Varik received an injury that caused him to limp for the rest of his life and it had taken him a month to recover enough to travel. Joram nursed his friend back to health while the rest of the men went their separate ways immediately after the escape. They did not do so out of ingratitude, but rather for reasons of safety.

The two men worked their way back to Tatooine, doing odd jobs here and there to earn money for their journey. All during those long months Joram did not know if I had heeded his warning and escaped Naboo. He knew our planet had been devastated by Palpatine’s forces but did not know the fate of any of his loved ones. Our presence on Tatooine had been hoped for but not expected. We grieved together over our families, but we had been given a second chance and vowed to make the most of it. Life is sweet and not to be wasted.

We all worked very hard and within a year the Dunestrider family sold their large farm and our families both purchased smaller farms outside of Mos Espa. We shared in our joys and our heartaches, and the burdens were made lighter with many glad hands to share the work. The Dunestriders and our own little family became one larger family that went by different names.

It has been eighteen years now since I fled Naboo. Our love has been as constant as the heat of Tatooine, and still burns us with its intensity. We had another son and named him Varik, because he would not exist but for the steadfast loyalty of Varik Dunestrider.

I never got another letter from Joram because we were never apart again. We would sometimes take out the old letters and remember. Letters were a reminder of the old-fashioned ways of Naboo. Data pads did not touch at forgotten memories. But the antique ways of ink and paper will forever bring to our minds Naboo and our families. They are gone but we remember.

We made our home on a planet that is as different from Naboo as it is possible to be. But I think that made it easier to heal and go on. We remember the planet of our birth and those we lost, but we find joy in what we have here and now.

In the evenings Joram and Varik discuss the affairs of the galaxy as they watch the twins suns set on the horizon. They speak of fallen comrades and battles won and lost. And there are things they do not talk about, even between themselves. There are some memories that are best left to decay and disappear.

We all sense a change coming. There are whispers of a rebellion against Palpatine, who may find it was easier to steal a galaxy than to hold it. In the end, it may only take one spark to ignite a fire that spreads across the planets. It will only take one who is willing to dare to dream and take the risk to make this galaxy a better place for all of us. May the gods bless their endeavors.

Beautiful, beautiful story, VDRLVR! THe imagery was fantastic, and I loved the ending. I'm sure you meant it this way, but how ironic that they're that close to the little spark that starts off the end of the Empire. Great job, and congratulations on so many nominations in the fanfic awards. happy

Prison camp? Typical of Palpy! I liked the fact that Varik stuck around to spring him out of prison. Great ending, and very ironic that they were on the same planet with that "spark" she mentioned.

I liked the fact that these characters didn't seem to know anything that the common person wouldn't have known. They didn't get any magical insights or voices in their heads telling them the whole story.

Great job!

That was awesome! Varik is my new hero. happy

I liked the way you described them making a new home on Tatooine. That twist was particularly ironic in light of the way Anakin wanted so badly to leave Tatooine and found his future (i.e. Padme) on Naboo.

I'm am utterly speechless. This story was incredible. I loved their reunion and the story of how Varik saved Joram. The epilogue was so bittersweet, the way they forged new lives for themselves but could never completely escape or forget the past (as is the case with all of us). I also loved the irony and foreshadowing concerning the "spark."

As always, a beautifully written and masterfully executed story. happy

So Palpatine would destroy his own homeworld... Very emotional and I'm guessing someone in your family is in the military?
