amidalachick - great vignette. Very poignant.
That quote is the one I was thinking about too, VaderLVR. But now I remember the one that agentj references. Sad.
Wonderful, wonderful vig, VaderLVR.
Now I've got an A/P plot bunny from it I'll have to do for this challenge. Thanks for sharing it!!!

I read that other quote about Watto today. I
still
haven't read the entire RotS from cover to cover! Skipping around a bit, yes....
I remember AotC where Anakin confronts Watto, and there's a reaction shot of Padme. She has this "if looks could kill" thing in her eyes, like Watto has done something really, really horrible, yet all he's doing in the scene is making small talk. Maybe there's a story in there somewhere, considering there must have been a little bit of time in the ship where Anakin conveyed to Padme things that Watto did to him in the past.

Title: Day of Reckoning
Author: VaderLVR64
Characters: Darth Vader
Timeframe: Approx. 2 years post ROTS
Summary: A Sith Lord plots.
Notes:
ROTS SPOILERS!!!
One of the lines is plucked almost directly from
Revenge of the Sith
Mr. Stover said it so well that I couldn’t help but use it.
ROTS SPOILERS!!!!!!!!
Do not read ANY further if you are remaining spoiler free.
Last chance…
No turning back now…
I’m warning you.
More notes…The events on Mustafar never took place. Padme simply fled and Obi-Wan disappeared.
Day of Reckoning
The figure of Lord Vader was a familiar one to the palace inhabitants. He was often seen roaming the luxurious corridors at all hours of the day and night. They murmured to themselves, wondering when, even if, he slept.
Had he paid them any heed he might have informed them that no, he did not sleep. Sometimes he fell into an unconscious state brought about by physical exhaustion. But it was not sleep. It was something else entirely. Just as those who looked upon him might mistake him for a man. That resemblance was misleading, however.
Many of the loveliest women in the Imperial capital viewed the Sith Lord with favor. After all, he was young and still quite handsome, even if he could fly into a murderous rage with no warning at all. Some were rewarded with his attention, if only for a night or two. His appetite for pleasures of the flesh had fast become legend. But those who looked at him, really looked at him, were repelled by what they saw.
The eyes, which might have been beautiful once, were now blazing portals into some private hell that only he could see. To have those glowing orbs turned your way was disconcerting at best, fatal at worst. The scar which ran along the side of his face did nothing to detract from his physical appeal, but it drew attention to his eyes. Those who had any perspicacity never went any further in their examination of him; the eyes were simply too unsettling.
This night found Lord Vader stalking through the hallway just outside his personal apartment. The sound of his boots cracked loud in the silence, the slap of heel hitting marble warning everyone who might share his insomnia of his approach.
But on this night he was alone.
Alone, just as he preferred to be.
Lord Vader exited the palace and found himself in a small garden. It was his own private garden, though even those who attended it wondered what a Sith might find to contemplate in such a verdant setting. Nevertheless, the garden was full of the most exotic blooms and plant life to be found in the galaxy. But of course, even this lovely little haven held deadly surprises.
To entertain himself, he had also imported several predatory plants. Some with thorns full of poison, some with jaw-like appendages that were ready to snap out at any unsuspecting admirer. It amused him to consider that his garden was almost as dangerous as he was. Almost.
He would move gracefully among the deadly plants, almost daring them to try and harm him. He had, on occasion, lured some unsuspecting victim into his garden and simply enjoyed the festivities. Of course, the other party could not dredge up quite as much enthusiasm.
The gardeners cleaned up the corpses silently, their eyes warily watching the deadly plants that seemed to sit smugly in their beds of dirt and rotting leaves. They weren’t always wary enough, which merely lent a certain excitement to their work. Blood had seeped into the soil, and its rich aroma greeted Lord Vader. He inhaled deeply, savoring it as another man might enjoy a woman’s perfume.
As he usually did, he came to the edge of the veranda and looked out over what he considered his realm. It might not be his in name yet, but one day soon he would claim it. He came here to caress his jewel with his eyes, like a woman who takes her precious gems out of their box and admires them before putting them away for future use.
He let his gaze linger lovingly on the ruins of the Jedi Temple.
That was his crown jewel. He had destroyed that himself. If he closed his eyes he could still smell the burning flesh and hear the cries of those who fell to his blade. He shuddered in remembered ecstasy. Those ruins were his greatest work to date.
But they would be nothing compared to what he would accomplish in the years to come. His lip curled as he considered what atrocities he might commit next. Or perhaps he would do nothing at all, merely sit in this palace and let the machinations of the politicians bring down this house of cards that Palpatine had created.
Every system had a reason to hate the Emperor.
Lord Vader was simply biding his time, letting the hatred build to a flood that would wash up against the palace doors and destroy the spider who crouched within. Lord Sidious, like his own Master before him, would simply fail to wake up one day. And the people would rejoice.
A cold and cruel smile slashed across the handsome young face.
His eyes were drawn to another building, another veranda. It was cloistered in shadows now. He had closed it off, making it a shrine of sorts. Not a shrine to some long dead deity, but a monument to his own stupidity and naiveté. There he had given his love and trust, and there it had been betrayed.
One day he would avenge that act as well.
But until that time he let 500 Republica stand as a reminder. He could look at that building and remember that there would never be anyone worthy of his trust. One day he would find her and his child and he would bring her back to that place where she had committed her treachery. He would take her back to that veranda where they had kissed and promised each other an eternity, and he would kill her.
The child would be his heir.
Palpatine would be dead and gone and Lord Vader would sit on the throne. Padme’s child would follow him. He could see her now, nurturing Anakin’s light in their child, trying so hard to make herself believe that the light would save them. How it would pain Padme to know that her child would one day rule the dark Empire that had crushed her precious Republic.
Before she died he would whisper in her ear of all he planned for this galaxy, and all that goodness he would twist and warp in their child. He would revel in watching her eyes grow wide with pain and fear as he held her close to him. And then those lovely brown eyes would go blank, as empty as death.
There was a day of reckoning coming.
Lord Vader would see to it.

Much scarier than the guy in the suit.
This guy is just evil to be evil. Very chilling, VaderLVR! Great vig!!!
Darkness in the Things we Love
Cold, and hard.
That is the extent of my thoughts as the exhaustion of twenty-four years soaks into me. Into the metal and the flesh and circuits. I am so very tired. Even though I do not deserve it,
let this end quickly
.
I hit the hardness of the duratile floor as I am pushed back in a defensive move that had I been myself, I would have been prepared for. Had I been myself, I would have used this position of alluded weakness to gain an edge or a feint in which to somehow catch my opponent off guard, and bring about his end quickly and precisely. There should be no going back on a decision to end an opponent’s life. The end triumph should always overcome allusions of pity or mercy. Destiny does not wait for anyone, even those poor souls who find themselves at the end of a lightsaber.
There are many things I would do if I was “myself”, but incongruously I find I am in a precarious and quite unfamiliar position. One that I have not occupied in many years. At the end of a lightsaber. I grasp for the darkness that has always been my shroud, my fortress of detachment. Only when you feel, do you gain disadvantage. The Jedi taught me this. Yet here I lay, at the end of a Jedi’s blade, for that is surely what he is now. Obi-Wan has taught him well, he has become the student I could never be. As I lie here, I am suddenly reminded of the irony in life. I was once that unabashed youth, bent on meting out punishment to those who had escaped justice and so viciously wronged me. Then it hits me. It is not a young Jedi I am reminded of, but what that young Jedi let himself become. The horrible monster that threw away his family. The monster that threw away brotherhood, compassion and love…that threw away his destiny.
I grasp unsuccessfully for the comfort of darkness, and am unable to touch it. My darkness is not mine anymore, it is his. And for a moment, my heart freezes in my chest as the truth of the situation settles itself firmly on me. Taunting me of my final failure…as a father.
Do not do this, Luke.
I hold my hand my left hand up, my right hand hurled to the abyss. It seems destiny always come back for payment. I know what this means. From the fog comes a picture, clear as a Tatooine afternoon, of a boy standing in the same place you are, uttering to the very same man, "
This is not the Jedi way."
Do not do this, my son. Not this way.
You are too good.
If there is anything I know for certain now, it is that I would end your life right now rather than have you bear the life I have lived. For darkness is no comfort, and it is certainly nowhere you should be. I have no allusions now to what my motives might have been in asking you join me, nor do I care. All I know is that at this point, all I can do is hold my hand up and hope that the unwavering good that was passed to you from another that suffered for simply loving me will overcome the dragon I have burdened you with. It is only now I realize how she must have suffered. It is not easy watching darkness in the things we love.

Scary and very believable.

That was simply amazing! It made that whole scene so much more sad as Vader looks at his son and sees that darkness.
Wonderful!

Title: From the Shadows of the Past
Author: VaderLVR64
Characters: Darth Vader, Luke
Timeframe: ESB – this meeting takes places on Bespin, just like in the movie, but some things have changed.
Summary: A young Jedi confronts his greatest enemy, who will reveal a shocking secret.
Notes:
NO SPOILERS!
Remarks on based on things said in the OT, which somewhat contradict each other, but I used them anyway. Another plot bunny bit. Okay, this is for the “Vader without the Suit” challenge. You will see that some things have changed from canon. The reason I did this is because if Anakin was never injured his identity would not be hidden by the armor. He was too well known as the “Hero With No Fear” for everyone in the galaxy to remain ignorant of his former identity. So, I had to make some adjustments. I think a lot might have changed if Anakin had not been injured in the fight with Obi-Wan. You’ll see…
From the Shadows of the Past
Luke approached the Sith, his blue blade and the crimson one of his opponent lighting the space between them. The steam rose up and danced between the two warriors.
The Dark Lord stared at the young man, a disconcerted look on his face. His eyes narrowed and Luke felt a dull pressure rising in his skull. One hand came up to cradle his aching head and he closed his eyes against the intrusion. “Stop!”
To his shock, the pressure was removed and the Sith simply stood there, watching him. Luke felt his hand twitching on the hilt of his lightsaber but Vader remained still and silent.
Finally, he spoke. “Lars is it?” Lord Vader asked doubtfully with an odd smile on his face.
Again, that dull pressure in his head but just as it had been before, it was quickly removed. That mental touch made Luke feel exposed, almost naked before the Dark Lord’s gaze. Vader shook his head and spoke. “No, I don’t think so.”
He looked at Luke with a very strange smile. “Where did you grow up boy?’
Clutching his saber hilt as if it were a talisman, Luke swallowed. Unsure of where the conversation was leading, Luke replied nervously. “Tatooine.”
With his answer Vader threw back his head and laughed, but when the laughter stopped there was nothing but cold triumph on his face, as if he had finally won some long running game of sabaac.
“Force, that old man always was too damned smart,” he said with a note of reluctant admiration. To Luke’s astonishment, the Sith flicked off his blade and assumed a relaxed stance. His blue eyes seemed to look into Luke’s soul, trying to discover all of his secrets. “Right under my nose and the last place I’d look!” Vader muttered to himself. Then he spoke to Luke once more.
“And your parents?” Vader asked in a conversational tone. “Where are they?”
“Dead,” Luke answered flatly. “Your troopers killed them.” He was still haunted by the memory of finding their bodies and the remains of his home, smoke rising up to the twin suns of Tatooine.
Something flickered in the Dark Lord’s eyes and was gone before the young man could identify it. “Tell me, young Luke, how did you like farming?”
Luke’s eyes widened at the Sith’s knowledge of his family, and then he looked down, unable to meet those blue eyes any longer. Something in Vader’s voice told him that he
knew
the young man had been a reluctant farmer at best. “Why does that matter to you?” He asked defensively.
The broad shoulders beneath the black cloak moved in a shrug. “I’m just curious,” he said idly, and then he smiled. “It’s always good to know everything you can about your opponent.”
There was something in the voice that suddenly reminded him of Ben Kenobi, the same note of subtle correction and admonishment. His eyes jerked up to meet Vader’s. “You were a Jedi.” he said accusingly. He had heard the stories but never had he believed them. A Jedi served the Light. A Sith was pledged to the Darkness. To reconcile that one man could do both was unfathomable.
A satisfied look settled on Vader’s features and he gave Luke a small bow. “Your insight serves you well. Yes, for once the historians got it right.”
Blinking hard, Luke found a dozen questions flooding his mind. He backed away cautiously, but Vader seemed content to let him retreat.
“Is that thought so shocking?” The Sith asked in a mocking tone.
“Yes-” Luke stopped, his brow furrowed in confusion. “No- I don’t know.”
Lord Vader began to pace slowly in a circle around the wary young man. The steam continued to rise and made the Sith lord seem more a shadow than a man, his dark garments blending in with the gloom surrounding them. Luke kept a cautious eye on his dangerous companion.
Vader’s eyes flashed his way. “You were adopted?” He asked suddenly.
“Yes,” Luke answered before he realized it. He turned to keep his face toward the pacing Sith.
“And your
real
parents?”
Bristling at the older man’s tone, Luke’s chin came up and his eyes narrowed. “Dead. They’re all dead. Killed by your Empire.”
Vader pursed his lips and shrugged. “Collateral losses, I assure you, nothing personal, boy.”
“And that is supposed to make it better?” Luke snarled. “You’re a monster, you and everyone who serves you!”
“Perhaps,” he answered calmly.
The two warriors circled each other. Luke’s saber still in his hand, the blue blade shimmering between them. The Sith was cool and composed, his saber in his black grip but not ignited. That would not stop him from striking the young man down and he knew it. Vader was lightning fast and highly skilled in the deadly arts of warfare.
“I assume Kenobi trained you?” Vader asked as he hooked his thumb in his wide utility belt.
“Yes.”
“Did he ever tell you what happened to your father?”
Luke stared at the Dark Lord, his uneasiness growing with each passing second. “He told me he died, that he was killed by the Empire – by you.” The young man stood up very straight and threw his shoulders back. “He was a Jedi.” Pride laced the words.
“Yes, he was.”
Eyes widening, Luke could not stop the question that tumbled past his lips. “You knew my father?”
“Oh, I knew him quite well. And Kenobi, too,” Vader answered easily, a smile rendering his features softer, more human. "We were all Jedi then, so convinced that our way was the only way." The tight, cold lines were easing as they spoke.
The young Jedi remained silent, unsure of what he could say to this new knowledge.
“Does the name Skywalker mean anything to you, Luke?”
“It was your name, before…”
“Before I became Lord Vader,” he answered. “Before I killed my Sith Master and took his place.”
“Yes,” Luke answered quietly. “Before you became evil.”
The Sith shook his head as if listening to a foolish and somewhat annoying child. “I suppose that might be the truth, from a certain point of view.”
“The truth is the truth,” Luke replied implacably.
“I prefer to think of it as setting myself free,” Vader answered. “But tell me, does the name Skywalker make you
feel
…anything? Does it sound familiar to you? As if it should
belong
to you?”
Luke recoiled sharply. How had he known that something in Luke cried out when he heard the name? Something inside of him hat wanted to claim it?
“You are a Skywalker,” Vader told him quietly. “Search your feelings; you know it to be true.”
Despite the warning that clanged in his head, Luke turned his back on the Sith. Frail memories, buried so deeply that he had never known they existed, came clamoring to the surface.
Perhaps Anakin’s son can right the wrongs of his father.
Too much of his father in him…
They’re dangerous, these powers of his. Look what happened to Anakin.
He whirled around abruptly and a sharp cry escaped him. “NO!’
Darth Vader clipped his lightsaber to his belt and held out his hand. “I
am
your father, Luke.”
The young man backed away until he was pressed against the wall. He shook his head, a look of growing horror on his face. “No, that’s not possible!”
A gentle, encouraging smile made the harsh shadows of the Sith’s face softer. His flesh seemed to glow with an inner light, an amber radiance from within. In his eyes, flame danced briefly and was extinguished.
“Son, together we can bring peace to the galaxy.”
“I am not your son!”
“Look at me, Luke. Do you not see my eyes in y our mirror? You have my chin,” he said quietly. “And your mother’s undaunted spirit,” his voice grew sad.
“My mother?” Vader had touched upon the one topic that was guaranteed to make Luke listen to him, the one person about whom Luke knew nothing at all.
“Your mother, my wife,” Vader answered. “My beloved Padme.”
“Padme…” Luke whispered, trying out the sound of the name on his tongue.
“She was so proud to be carrying my child,” Vader said softly, his tone silky. “
We
were thrilled at the idea of having a child.”
Luke shot him a suspicious glance. “So what happened?”
Vader hesitated. “We argued, she left me and went to her family and I never saw her again. Then I was busy gathering the remnants of my Empire together and she died before I could find her and win her back.”
He looked at Luke. “I thought you had died with her, son.”
The young man could not speak. His father came closer.
“If I had known…” For the first time Vader seemed at a loss for words. He cleared his throat. “If I had known I would have come for you.”
Shaking his head, his entire body trembling beneath the force of his emotions, Luke lurched away from the taller man.
“I don’t know what to think anymore,” he said in an agonized whisper. His eyes met Vader’s and filled with tears. “I’ve wanted to know my father for so long and here you are, but you are…”
“I am your father, Luke,” Vader answered calmly. “That is all you need to know.”
A black gloved hand reached out invitingly. “Join me, my son, and we will make this Empire a power you can be proud to serve.” He smiled and beckoned his son forward. “I will listen to your Rebels’ demands.”
Luke found his feet were carrying him toward the Dark Lord.
“We will rule as father and son,” Vader promised him in a smoky voice.
“You will pardon the Rebels?” Luke found just enough strength to ask his father that question.
Vader did not answer, but took his son’s lightsaber from his unresisting hand. He put his arm around the young man’s shoulders and led him gently into a corridor.
“Come with me, Luke, and I will teach you what you need to know to lead a galaxy,” Vader whispered in his ear.
Together, father and son walked slowly into the shadows.

One of the things I like about challenge threads is that I can find some of my favorite authors there and then discover some new ones that I might not have read otherwise! Everyone here is doing a great job! I'm not spoiler free, so I can read 'em all!
to everyone!

Loved how Vader was determined to keep Luke from walking his path.

Nice! I could imagine a lovely Sith Lord, somewhat older now, still quite handsome.
