Summary: A short story set on Tatooine, set ten years after the Empire has ascended to power in the galaxy, in the ravaged town of Mos Espa, the poor children of the town gather around an old hermit to hear a story. Hidden amongst the crowd is a thirteen year old boy who knows he is too old for fairy stories, but cannot take his mind off the storyteller's tales, and hidden also is a creature who also draws fascination from the tales, but his thoughts are cruel and melancholy.

An unusual story, but an interesting yarn, and it's both a story of revelations and hints of things that are still yet to come.

Okay, my first story I've posted here, so please be nice.

DISCLAIMER: Yes, my name is George Lucas and I'm a millionaire, and currently working on two motion picture productions, but I still have time to waste writing stories for fanfiction while finishing off my Episode III movie and my Indiana Jones 4 script.

On the other hand, however, I'm a poor year twelve, farm-girl who does have better things to do with her time, ( like studying!) But priorities first, and as per usual, I don't own Star Wars and all it's characters, I'm just borrowing them.

So Lucas, get back to work and hurry up with that movie and the script for the other one!

A story about a boy, a girl, and a Jedi warrior: By Aiel.

--------------------

Tatooine, what can you say about a planet like that?

Nothing much. Unless you enjoy sand, upon sand, upon sand, the heat from two suns, deadly creatures such as Kryat Dragons, the cruel sand-people and the fabled Sarlacc, then you better steer clear of this desert planet.

But a good seven thousand years ago, farmers got the idea into their heads that it might be a noble venture for moisture farming, once, of course, they got rid of the obvious problem of the native inhabitants, the Tusken Raiders aka Sand-people.

That idea, however, proved increasingly difficult and the naturally volatile Raiders attacked the colonies to no end, right up until the days of now and either side was not about to let up yet, and probably never would.

Because of the Sand-people, and other aforementioned hazards, crossing the Dunland wastelands of Tatooine was a dangerous task. That's why thirteen- year-old Luke Skywalker was particularly honored, and mostly frightened.

It was the first time the boy had been out further then Anchorhead, Owen let the boy visit his school friends while he bought supplies at the station city, but occasionally supplies had to be bought from one of the big cities. And in the problem of a replacement moisture vaporator, even his Uncle, Owen Lars, gruffly admitted defeat and would leave for one of the bigger cities, usually he would take Luke back to the homestead to help out his Aunt Beru.

But on this rare occasion, Owen had marched into the PowerStation where Luke had been hanging out with Biggs Darklighter, Camie, Fixer and his other friends, playing holo-pool and basically hanging around gossiping.

"C'mon Luke, we're going to one of the Mosi," he commented in the dull voice he used when Luke was around, Skywalker nodded and waved farewell to Biggs. An offer to go to one of the Mosi cities was an opportunity not to be missed, especially now that Owen barely talked to him anymore, except to order the teenager to do something. Only three years ago Luke had started working on the moisture vaporators in the desert, at his uncle's insistence and Beru's great dismay.

Even though Owen had never said why, Luke knew, it was punishment for what he had done.

Beru had lost her spinning spool and couldn't find it anywhere, Luke still didn't know why or what possessed him to do it. He didn't know how he did it. He just closed his eyes and the answer was clear to him, he could almost feel the hard, japor wood of the spindle, and he uttered four simple words that had sealed the then ten year old boy's fate for as long as he lived with his Uncle.

"It's behind the sofa," Luke had said softly, he opened his eyes and saw Beru and Owen staring gob-smacked at him, Owen reached behind the cushions of the sofa and pulled out the spindle.

"Did you put there, Luke?" Owen said tonelessly, almost begging him to say he had, Beru looked between her husband and nephew, her eyes wide, Luke shook his head and lowered his eyes. Owen took in another deep breath, the boy knew he was on thin ice, but something deep down told him to stand fast and not to lie.

"Did you put it there, Luke? I don't care if you did, don't tell me you didn't," Lars implored, Luke looked up at him defiantly, his blue eyes blazing.

"I can not lie, and I won't lie. I saw where it was in my head, I could almost feel it," he looked at Aunt Beru, "Aunt Beru, you dropped it there when I was at school, Bouncer was digging up your Demia's and you ran out to stop him---" Luke was stopped mid sentence when Owen slapped him with the back of his hand across his right cheek.

Luke looked at him and he touched his cheek in horror, Owen looked at his own hand then at Luke, as if not believing what he had done, "I'm sorry Luke. Go to your room, and don't come out till morning," he walked away.

Skywalker looked over at Beru who was approaching him with her arms stretched out to embrace him, Luke stepped back and shook his head, and then he turned away and marched up to his room.

Things hadn't gotten better over the next few years, to tell the truth they were far worse, a few weeks ago Beru wanted Luke to go away to the preliminary Academy, it was a new Imperial venture. Though it wasn't compulsory before entering the Academy, Beru knew Luke would benefit from it and the harvest had been extremely good, so they had the money.

He had heard Owen and Beru arguing over it, when he was suppose to be in bed, but was sitting on the stone steps listening to them, "---you can't keep Luke here forever Owen, he's growing up---"

"You think I haven't seen that? Every single damn year he's looked more like Anakin, now he's almost a man, more then ever he haunts the eyes of everyone who knew his father, including me and that damn Kenobi. You look at me in the eyes Beru and tell me it wouldn't be dangerous to put him in full view of that Mechanical monstrosity? You think he would not know him?" Owen yelled, Beru sat down and sighed.

"He might not, we don't know if Luke's mother told Anakin of his birth," she said, but she knew it was a loosing battle and sighed again, "I agree we shouldn't send him away."

Luke couldn't understand it, what had his father done that was so wrong? As far as he knew his father had been a navigator on a spice freighter, and his mother a refugee from the thousand moon's system. When Luke was born, they lived on Tatooine with Anakin's brother, Owen and his wife, Luke's mother died giving birth to him and his father--- he wasn't sure.

The drive had been mostly silent, but Luke decided to break it, "so, where are we going?" He asked casually, Luke's voice had recently broken, but unlike his other friend's which would go from deep to high almost piercingly, his voice remained low and soft as it had always been, the only difference was in the pitches.

Owen glanced quickly at him, "Mos Espa," he said without demur.

Luke slumped into his seat, his previous excitement long gone. Mos Espa was ravaged by Imperials almost seven years ago, it had just recently recovered and was a well known dump of the scum of the galaxy. And considering that the whole of Tatooine collectively was known as the 'arm-pit of the galaxy,' this was a pretty hefty claim, but Luke knew his Uncle well, anything to save a couple of dollars.

He was dozing out at the endless sand hills, sometimes, he fancied he could see the future and maybe the past. He was sure, once, out of the corner of his eye he saw a blue clothed woman, standing in the door-way of the garage, staring at him thoughtfully when he was in fixing his T-16 Skyhopper, he knew if he turned around she probably wouldn't be there, "can I help you, M' lady?" He had asked, not looking in her direction.

"Can you see me?" The soft voice whispered to him, Luke inclined his head and she sounded surprised, "I--- I want nothing, it's just you look so like him---"

Luke lifted his head and put down the hydro-spanner, "like who?" He asked.

He could feel the sadness in the woman's voice, "like---"

"Luke!" His Uncle suddenly yelled, marching in, Luke spun around and Owen was standing there but the woman was gone, it was nothing unusual, spirits followed him every where.

He'd seen a dark haired woman sitting on the end of his bed before, smiling at him and she reached over and stroked his blonde hair before standing up and walking away, he had seen so many men and women in dark robes. Some cried out and implored to him, others tried to teach him strange things, like that tall, long haired man who taught him how to find things with his mind, but some talked about the 'Force,' ?

Luke was lost in his dream-state, and thought the brown cloaked figure ahead of him was part of it, but then he realized he was very real, "Uncle Owen, that old man, is that Ben Kenobi?" He asked, he hadn't seen the old hermit in years but was pretty sure that was the old man, marching across the desert.

Owen rolled his eyes, "yeah. That's the crazy old bastard, what is he up to now?" He sighed, "we better ask him." Owen pulled up next to the shrouded figure.

As if knowing they would already be there, the man turned to them casually, "Good afternoon Mister Lars," he greeted the farmer, who grunted in reply, Ben then looked over at Luke, and the boy caught a glimpse of the twinkling blue eyes. "And that young man must be Luke Skywalker. Hello young Luke, my you've grown lad," he said softly, almost painfully, Skywalker smiled in return, as the old man pushed back his hood, revealing the prematurely aged face, graying beard and short hair, which were streaked with ginger.

"Hello Master Kenobi," Luke replied solemnly, Kenobi looked surprised and raised his eyebrows.

"Now who told you to call me that, Luke?" He asked, Owen glared at Kenobi and Ben bit his lip, "no, I'm far from anyone's Master, not now anyway, Ben will be just fine, by any chance are you head for Mos Espa?" He asked conversationally, Lars narrowed his eyes.

"Yes, you're looking for a lift there? A passage away from Tatooine perhaps?"

Ben shook his head and smiled, leaning forward nonchalantly "I promised a man there that I would come and tell stories to the little ones, they need some cheering up---" He flashed another smile at Luke.

"Always the charitable one," Owen muttered irritably.

Kenobi ignored his remark,"---the man was in Anchorhead, and said that most of the little children hadn't even seen a holo-vision. He said an old storyteller would be welcome."

Luke looked curiously at the mysterious old man, "you're a storyteller?" He inquired, he had never known what the old hermit's previous occupation had been.

"Of sorts," Ben replied, then he turned to Owen, "we might want to get there before dark," he insinuated, Owen nodded and barked an order to Luke to move into the back of the covered landspeeder. The boy humbly agreed, and wished bleakly for his own landspeeder, Ben climbed in and they sped off.

Luke looked curiously at Kenobi, as if sensing Skywalker's gaze Ben smirked to himself knowing the question that would come from the boy, "Ben. Were you planning to walk all the way to Mos Espa?"

Kenobi shook his head, "no, I knew you were headed this way." He replied, and as he didn't offer any other form of explanation Luke slumped back in his seat and remained quiet until they first caught sight of the ruined city. It called to him, somehow, he clenched his fists angrily as he saw the damage the Imperials had caused to the city, with no clear intention, the buildings had been blasted and the streets had been terrorized. There had been only three casualties, a Toydarian shop keeper, an old woman and her son. Some people whispered rumors that the old woman and her adopted son had been a knight and apprentice of the mythical Jedi that had been wiped out of the galaxy by Darth Vader, who was also rumored to be behind the attack on Mos Espa. Watto, the Toydarian, had been some two-bit junk salesman, no-body knew why he had been taken out. Personally Luke didn't believe the rumors.

Why would a Jedi knight, even one hiding from Darth Vader, want to stay on Tatooine?

Ben tutted as they drove through the street, "terrible, terrible," he moaned sadly, Owen glared at him, as if it was his fault.

"All this carnage, just to find a lousy old witch and her foster son, imagine if he found another old Jedi on this planet?" He growled, Luke looked amazed at Kenobi and Owen gulped, he knew he had said the wrong thing, "I think it's time you left, Ben---"

"You were a Jedi, Master Kenobi?" Luke interrupted, his eyes bright, Ben shook his head.

"No, I wasn't, I knew one once though, a long time ago---" he smiled at Luke, "perhaps I will tell the story to the little ones. Would you like to hear the story Luke?"

Skywalker smiled, "I think I'm a little old for fairy stories," he commented, Ben shook his head and grinned.

"No-one is ever too old to learn something new," Kenobi reprimanded, Luke looked over at Owen, Lars pulled the Landspeeder to a halt.

"Alright Kenobi. Get out." Owen flatly ordered, Ben nodded then smiled at Luke.

"Good-bye Luke, I hope you come by to hear the tale," he said sadly as he opened the door and stepped out, pulling his hood over his head as he went, Luke turned to his Uncle, wanting to yell at him for treating the poor man like that. But Owen glared at him and the boy fell silent, they moved only a bit further on until arriving at a small machine shop, Lars pulled up the drivers door and turned to Luke.

"Stay in the landspeeder." He ordered, marching away before the teenager could complain, Luke slumped in the back seat and scowled, he couldn't wait till he could leave Tatooine, the flaming dust-ball was beginning to get on his already rattled nerves.

Then the boy sat up, his usually calm, open and innocent face in an expression of annoyance, *screw this,* he thought with provocation, pulling up the back door and treaded out onto the street. He winced at the glare of the late-afternoon suns, it had been mid-morning when they had set off, and the boy's persistent hunger was creeping up on him again, he had a couple of coins in his pocket, certainly enough to get something to eat from some seller.

He wondered up the dusty streets, getting a fair few stares from people who commented to each other on his sun-lit blonde hair.

"Oh, that young man will break some hearts around here with that hair and those eyes," one old woman commented to her equally as old Twi-Lek female friend, who nodded her bleak agreement.

Luke was oblivious to them all, as he marched up to a food stand, "I'll have three of those Wasteland cakes, two packets of top-potato crisps, a bottle of Zoochberry flavored Bantha milk and do you have one of those Sweet bars? The fruit flavored one?" He questioned, the shopkeeper, a girl a few years younger then Luke, wordlessly nodded and handed over the food to the teenage boy.

Luke handed her handful of coins, she counted them, "ah, sir, there's far too many coins here---" she started, Skywalker took a bite out of one of the pastries, and waved her hand away.

"Nah, keep it, these are really good," Luke commented through a mouthful of Dewback steak and vegetables, he never had a lot of money but he was always generous with what he had, the girl smiled shyly.

"Thank-you," she said, staring as the boy marched off with all the food under his arm, munching away carelessly. He was then nearly knocked off his feet by a whole bunch off little kids.

"Hey, hey," Luke ordered, the kids obediently stopped, "where are you going in such a rush?"

One grubby little boy, grinned up at him, "we're gunna go see a storyteller, aren't we Corey?" He tugged on the slightly older girl who nodded.

Luke smiled, "well don't let me stop you, I'm headed over there as well," he said resolvedly. As the younger children instantly ran off and he followed them slowly, the group of children turned left a few metres ahead of Luke and started galloping down a flight of stairs that led to an open courtyard.

Skywalker trailed after them, stopping at the top to survey the scene, thirty or so children surrounded old Ben Kenobi, who was seated slightly above the cross-legged children on a simple wooden platform. Luke shuffled through and sat on an abandoned stone barrier, to watch the 'old wizard' perform his magic, a dark brown cloaked man, with the huge hood pulled over his head and covering his face, sat next to the teenage boy.

Luke glanced quickly at the big man, but supposed he meant no harm. He was so hunched over the boy guessed that he was just an old man, who came to keep watch over one of his grandchildren, he smiled briefly at the old man, "hi."

The old man, turned to him and nodded his head, before turning his gaze back to Kenobi, who was now seated on a chair, smiling at the silent pool of dirty faces, "the tale I will tell could be true. But then again, it may not be, I will not set it in any particular time or place, I will not name names, all I know is that this story starts with a boy, a girl and a Jedi warrior, finishes with a monster and how it will ultimately end---" he paused dramatically, "it hasn't been decided yet."

The children remained quiet, soaking up Kenobi's every word, the old man stood up and started pacing, "like any good story, there is action, love and tragedy, there is hero's and enemies, but I can see you growing impatient, shall I move on?"

"Yes please!" Everyone cried, Kenobi chuckled and sat down again.

"Once upon a time, there was a beautiful young Angel Queen in terrible danger. Her world was under terrible attack from evil aliens who wanted to take over her planet and enslave her people, for they thought they could control the fourteen year old girl. The Queen ruled the world alone and had nobody to help her, she knew the only way to help her people would be to speak to the great Gods of the Inner world, but she had no-way to get there, she fell to her knees and begged the Gods to send someone to help her.

Fortunately, the gods were kind and sent one of their bravest Jedi knights to help the Queen, he fought his way to the tall castle tower where she was kept captive, he rescued her and carried her away from her planet. Alas, as they were headed to the Inner world, they were blown off course and landed on a lush green planet, that seemed totally uninhabited, until the brave young Queen, saw a cave high up in the mountains.

"Look up there! Surely their must be people up there, and they will give us help!" She exclaimed, the young Jedi knight nodded his agreement.

Before they could climb up, they heard a voice, "are you lost?"

They spun around to see a little boy, dressed in rough woven clothing, he had bright blue eyes, and shaggy blonde hair. Even though the boy was only nine years old, he fell instantly in love with the brown haired girl, whom he didn't know was secretly a Queen. The Jedi and Queen begged him for help, and the kind boy took them up to the cave, where his mother was already cooking dinner, as they sat around on the cave floor they explained their plight and to their great delight they found out that the little boy that had found them, was an amazing mechanic and could fix their ship! The Jedi knight looked at the boy and was suddenly gifted with a vision from the great gods, they told him that the boy was like himself, a Jedi, and that the young Jedi knight must take the boy with him."

Obi-wan leaned forward, "the boy's mother agreed, and bid her son a tearful farewell. Now our three main characters are together, the Jedi, the boy and the girl. Well, the boy fixed their ship and they headed for the Inter world, the Queen was granted an audience, in which she begged them to give her and her people help, the Gods agreed and gave each of them a special weapon to defeat the evil aliens. He gave the Queen an enchanted blaster, the boy a magic fighter ship, and the Jedi an enchanted sword, that glowed an errie blue.

With these weapons, they returned to the planet and defeated the evil aliens, the Queen was put back on the throne, and the Kingdom returned to normal. The time had come for the three hero's to disperse, the Jedi knight was taking the boy to the Inner world to be trained and the Queen would remain to rule her people."

"Ten years past, and the Queen was once again in danger, except this time she had been captured by evil demons, who held her captive in their evil rocky underground chambers. The other two hero's heard what had happened and set off immediately to her rescue, the boy was now grown up and had become a dashing young Jedi, while our Jedi hero was now his Master. They rushed to the demon's lair and became engulfed in a mighty battle, the demon's charged and the two Jedi battled them left right and center, swinging their mighty enchanted swords.

Finally they came to where the Queen was being held captive. The Queen was so happy to see her friends again and kept looking at the grown up boy in wonder, for she had fallen in love with him as well," he laughed at the children's screwed up faces. "Oh it seems sickening now, but believe me when your older you'll change your mind. Now the boy and the girl had fallen in love, they got married without anyone knowing, but before they could settle down, the Jedi boy was called away to battle, where he was brainwashed into thinking he was evil---"

The man beside Luke, hissed angrily, Skywalker looked at him in surprise, but turned back to the storyteller.

"---Our Jedi hero was so sad, because he though his student had died, he went to visit the Queen and discovered that she had just had two children, twins. A sweet boy and a beautiful girl, the Queen told the Jedi all that had happened and that her children were also his student's children. They looked after the children together for two years, before the Queen died unexpectedly, for after seeing what her husband had become, she died from a broken heart. The brave Jedi, knew that he had to separate the twins, so he placed them on separate planets.

And as far as I know, the Jedi boy still lives, as does the Jedi hero, who waits and watches for the time when he can reunite the twins and rescue their father, then when that happens we can all say---"

"That they lived happily ever after?" The children chorused, Ben smiled and nodded.

"Perhaps someday, but not now," he bowed, and everyone clapped.

Luke turned to speak the dark robed old man that had been sitting beside him, but he had disappeared, he felt a firm hand on his shoulder, he turned around and it was Uncle Owen. He didn't look angry, just disappointed.

"Luke, I thought I told you to stay in the Landspeeder."

Skywalker winced, "c'mon Uncle Owen, you really didn't think I would really stay in the speeder, did you?" He offered him a crisp and Owen sighed and took one of the salty treats.

***

Ben shook hands with the village heads, and turned back to see that Luke was chatting bleakly with his Uncle, the look of extreme patience Owen wore on his face was one Ben himself had worn many times around Luke's father.

He felt a dark Force presence as a black shadow engulfed him from behind, and heard harsh, heavy breathing, "you spin a good yarn, storyteller."

Ben hesitated, "it's just a story to amuse the little children, it's just a fairy-story."

The deep voice wheezed his amusement, "I agree, it's much changed from it's original version. I suppose it is best that way. But I know one boy who should know the real story," he inclined his head in the direction Owen was ushering his teenage ward out of the courtyard, Luke waved to Kenobi and the old man returned the gesture as the half-grown boy and his Uncle disappeared.

The shrouded figure remained quiet, a soft hiss of his labored breath was all that could be heard, "is he happy?" He asked softly, Obi-wan Kenobi turned surprised to his former apprentice.

"I believe so, your step-brother and his wife are good people, they take good care of him." He paused, "how did you know?"

Vader turned away, "I have known for a long time, Kenobi. I would never place my own son in the Emperor's hands, not on purpose," he sighed.

"Then you've not come to try and take him? Because you would have to go through me first," Ben put his hand on his lightsaber, the figure held up his black gloved hand.

"No, I have no come to take him now. Now is not the right time, and the confrontation between us will happen soon, but not now." He moved into more of the light and Kenobi caught a glimpse of the hideous mask.

"Believe me, there is nothing that would give me greater pleasure then to see you dead, but now is not the right time but we will meet again." He hopped off the stage in the empty courtyard, the hesitated and looked up at his old Master.

"Keep him safe, won't you?"

Kenobi looked sadly down at his apprentice, "I promised her I would," he replied, Darth Vader hissed, then turned on his heal and marched away, his boot heals making a menacing, loud echoing noise in the stone courtyard.

Kenobi pulled up his hood and bowed his head as his greatest failure marched away once again; he looked up as a small winged-lizard bird flew past the glaring light of the suns. Thinking of what he had told the children.

"Perhaps not now, but someday," he smiled, as he stepped off the stage, and started walking into the setting sun's light, "someday very soon, we shall have another story of a girl, a boy and a Jedi warrior."

Please post and tell me what you thought of it. I'll have the epilogue up soon if people enjoyed it enough.

Wow, great story, Aiel! Good characterization, and I could see this happening. Poor Luke is so frustrated with his monotonous life on the farm, Owen and Beru so determined to protect him, but at the same time Owen is fearful of what the boy is and may become, and there was such a sad air of acceptance about Ben, it was just beautiful.

I loved the touch of Vader being there, and wanting his son to be well-cared for, still enemies with Kenobi, but willing to bide his time because he knows his old Master is the best one to protect Luke right now.

Very good story! Write more! happy

Excellent way to segue into ANH. Interesting way of telling the story, too.

Great story, Aiel. laugh

Vader being there, and being willing to let Ben keep watching over Luke was a terrific touch. It shouwed some of Vader's humanity leaking out.

Thanks to everybody for their kind reviews.

Kristeh: Yay! My first post-er hugs Yes, you captured just the idea I was hoping to set out for this story. Ah, Vader wanting his son to be well cared for hmm thinking maybe, but as we all know he wants his son to be the second sith and only ever two are there, no more no less as Yoda said. So he's just keeping Luke somewhere he can keep an eye on him and away from the Emperor, until Luke is strong enough. Evil, evil Vader angry Epilogue is comming and thanks for posting.

LukesTheMan: Thanks for the welcome. grin Great storyteller, well, I dunno about that, worried people might expect too much from me. But thanks for posting and more is comming very soon.

Jedi_Trevor_GulDan: Aw shucks, batting Everyone's been so nice. And yeah, a lot people always want to look at the final years leading to ANH from Vader, Leia or Obi-wan. But I always find a lack of Luke stories. Thanks and I'm posting more very soon.

VaderLVR64: Tanks! blush And I hope you enjoy the epilogue, I'll also be posting a couple more of my short stories soon, so I hope you keep an eye out for them.

JediMaster_Jen: I know what you mean, we'd all like to think there's a little bit of Anakin left in the monster even at the height of his evil before RotJ. And I always feel so sorry for Luke, we know he has a great destiny, but don't you just wish you could have told him this back in ANH? Thanks for posting. grin

Epilogue is being posted right after my little thankyou messages, thanks to everyone who's read this story, and I hope you like the Epilogue.

Summary: A short story set on Tatooine, set ten years after the Empire has ascended to power in the galaxy, in the ravaged town of Mos Espa, the poor children of the town gather around an old hermit to hear a story. Hidden amongst the crowd is a thirteen-year-old boy, who knows he is too old for fairy stories, but cannot take his mind off the storyteller’s tales, hidden also is a creature that also draws fascination from the tales, but his thoughts are cruel and melancholy.

A story about a boy, a girl, and a Jedi warrior: By Aiel.

Epilogue:

Nine years later----

---------------------

The tow headed man ducked his head as he walked out of the tiny mud hut, his icy blue eyes looked as cold and as hard as steel, but only too the people closest to him knew that this was how the young man kept himself from crying.

(*For a Jedi knows not of pain, for there is no death, there is only the Force*) Yoda had told him when he had first started training the young Jedi, oh it seemed so long ago, but was in truth only a bit over a year.

Luke Skywalker didn’t know where he stood; he wasn’t the shallow kid who blew up the Death Star, Yoda had told him he wasn’t the Jedi knight he would become yet, he was--- he was---
‘A man with no land,” he muttered the words that his Uncle had said so often, he jumped over a stray tree log, and walked over to where R2-D2 was repairing his X-wing. The little droid had an uncanny ability to sense his master’s emotions and tooted questioningly at Luke, who squatted down to check on the work of R2.

“I can’t do it Artoo,” he sighed, the droid beeped sympathetically, “I can’t go on alone.”

Then a soft, deep voice, with the faint hemming of comfort it had had sixteen years ago when Luke had first heard it, (though he suspected that he had heard before then as well.) Echoed softly, “Yoda will always be with you.”

Luke turned around and smiled at the spectre, “Obi-wan.” The name seemed so much more complicated then what he used to call the old man, but he had started doing so out of respect, though it really was the first time he had addressed Kenobi as such.

Obi-wan Kenobi, almost jovially put his hands on his hips as he stood waiting beside the log Luke had nearly tripped over previously, as if he was a royal cavalier posing for an ancient painting.

Luke stooped under the wing of his fighter and rested his arm on the top, “why did you lie to me?” He accused, “you told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father,” *who instead is very much alive and has told me so himself, right after he chopped off one of my limbs, * he added bleakly to himself.

The old Jedi spirit sighed, guessing the thoughts that flowed through the much younger man’s head, “your father, Anakin Skywalker, was lured by false truths and promises and came under the influence of the dark side. When he ceased to be your father and became Vader. So what I told you was the truth, from a certain point of view, however.”

Luke looked astounded, his entire life he had been lied to and hidden away, the least they, Kenobi, Owen and Beru, even his own mother, could have done was to tell the truth to him. “A certain point of view?” He almost yelled, betraying his emotions, even though his gentile face remained mildly passive.

Kenobi smiled, and somehow managed to sit quite stably on the old tree trunk, “sooner or later, Luke, you’ll realise just how things can differ depending on our own point of view. Anakin was a good friend.” He patted the vacant space next to him. Luke looked at him like a sullen child offered a sweet, and crept over to the spirit and obligingly sat next to him.

Obi-wan smiled at him, “when I first met your father, oh thirty-four years ago now, he was already a brilliant pilot at only nine years old, and I was amazed at how strong the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him, I had dreamed of training him as well as Yoda would have,” Obi-wan looked away from Luke and stared out at the bleak landscape of Dagobah, “I was wrong.”

Luke reached out to grab Obi-wan’s hand in earnest, then remembered his first Master was a spirit and rested his gloved mechanical hand on his lap again, “there is still good in him.” The old man looked at the young Jedi, “I have felt it Obi-wan, when he told me he was my father---I almost caught a glimpse of the man he used to be, I’m sure of it.”

Obi-wan shook his head, “no Luke, he’s more machine now then he is man, twisted and evil, far beyond your comprehension,” he rebuked, Skywalker shook his head.

“I can’t do it, Ben,” he implored, Obi-wan looked directly at him as he called him by the name he had gone by for many years, “I can’t kill my own father, whatever he is, I know I can save him.”

Kenobi looked away again, “then the Emperor has already won, he’ll trap you Luke and make you his slave as he did your father, he knows you will try to save your father. You were our last hope,” he murmured defeatedly, Luke bit his lip, feeling instantly guilty, and then he remembered what Yoda had said.

“Yoda spoke of another,” Skywalker said quickly, Obi-wan sighed.

“What?”

Luke stood up, and looked down at the spectre’s coldly mysterious eyes, “he said there was another Skywalker,” he managed to say, keeping the emotion out of his voice, Kenobi smiled his mysterious smile.

“Ah yes, the other he spoke of was your twin, Luke, your twin sister.”

The young man gaped for a moment, then sat back down on the log with a thump, “but--- I have no sister,” he said incredulously.

Kenobi looked down at the ground, “mmmm, to keep you both safe, your mother and I separated you two, we both knew that if Anakin had any children they would be a threat to him and the Empire, and that he might seek to destroy you and her. Or bring you both to the dark-side, that is why your sister’s identity remains safely anonymous.”

Luke closed his eyes, then nearly fell over in amazement when he realised, “Leia! Leia is my sister!” He cried, a soft smile of bewilderment spread across his face, no wonder why he first met her it seemed like he had know her forever. No wonder why his first instinct when Obi-wan didn’t hear his pleas was to call for her.

Obi-wan nodded, “your insight serves you well, but burry your feelings deep inside Luke, they do you credit but could be made to serve the Emperor’s darkest wishes,” he ordered, Luke nodded and set his jaw.

“That story you told Ben, all those years ago, it was about my parents and you wasn’t it?” Skywalker’s perfect memory, which could directly quote every single battle that took place during the Clone wars, recalled.

Obi-wan chuckled, “you don’t miss a beat, do you young Luke? Yes, most of it was true, but you know your father was born on Tatooine and your mother---well most of the story is true, I’ll leave it at that, but I encourage you to ask Leia about your mother. She was still alive when Leia was a little girl, she might tell you about her if you ask, but be careful how you ask her,” he pursed his lips, “if you get her alone, tell her the truth about who she is, and who her father is. Otherwise, keep it secret from everyone until your both ready.”

Luke looked serious, “even Han and Chewie?”

Obi-wan nodded, “especially Han. Let your sister tell him in her own time,” he looked around, “you must go now. They’re waiting for you and we’ve stalled the inevitable long enough, remember Luke to trust your instincts. I’m proud of you and your mother would be too, I’m proud of the man you are and the Jedi you will become,” he smiled as the much younger man grinned and looked at his feet.

“Thank-you, Master Kenobi.”

The amused spirit, chuckled again, “why so formal, Luke?”

Skywalker shrugged and turned back to his friend, “it doesn’t seem right to call you Ben any more, your not some crazy old wizard from the desert, you’re a Jedi Master,” he grinned ironically, Kenobi laughed.

“Alright, I’m Obi-wan, and I suppose we’ll leave it as such. But believe me, Luke, there will be a time when you call somebody else by the name of Ben, and you will be proud to do so,” he commented and started fading away.

Luke raised his eyebrows, ”who?” He demanded, but Obi-wan was gone; the only thing that remained was the sound of his light-hearted chuckling, Luke stood and gazed up at the starry sky and yelled.

“I will do as you ask, Ben, but I will try to save my father,” Luke lowered his head and started walking away, “I swear I will save him.”

As he started pulling on his flight costume he heard Obi-wan’s voice, * you do that, young Jedi warrior, you do that. *
