Vader—no, Anakin—rushed at his former master.
Grabbing Palpatine, the former Dark Lord desperatly made his way to the reactor core of the throne room.
The lightning was now striking at him, its pain like a thousand knives.
And in that moment, the former Sith knew he was going to die.
He could feel it.
But I deserve this, he thought, for what I have committed in the past…
With a burst of strength—the strength of his love for Padme, Luke, and Leia—Anakin threw the Emperor down the shaft.
To his death.
And the darkness in the whole room—in Anakin’s own heart—faded away.
Forever.
Luke and Leia rushed to their father, keeping him from falling into the core as well.
“Please…help me take…this mask off.”

“But you’ll die,” Luke whispered.
“Nothing…can stop that. Just for once…let me look on both of you with my…own eyes.”
Slowly the helmet was lifted off.
Underneath laid a man whose skin was pale white. He had no hair.
But his eyes shone with happiness, and perhaps grief as well.
“Leia…Luke… it doesn’t matter that your friends never destroyed the Death Star. With Palpatine and…Vader gone, the Empire shall fall.”
Leia was distraught.
“But what’ll happen to you?”
After a pause, Anakin continued.
“Leia…you look just like your mother. I’m sorry she can’t be with you now. You would have loved her.”
Both of them nodded, tears in their eyes.
“Do with me what you want to do. You can leave me here or take me back to Endor. It doesn’t really matter.”
There was a long pause as Anakin gathered the last of his strength.
“I’m proud that you…became…what I could never be.”
Luke and Leia carried their father out, trying hard not to cry.
That night on Endor, brother and sister set a torch to a funeral pyre.
Anakin’s body died that night.
But his spirit was redeemed.
The End
